Lost preferences

Every time I start the game it starts the intro video as if it’s the first time I’ve loaded it and all my preferences (hot keys, quick cast keys, talent choices etc.) are reset to default. How can I fix this? I’ve lost all my talent choices for every hero!

I had this problem and it’s a permissions issue with the game’s data folder. I think a recent patch changed the filesystem permissions for the folder and effectively locks HOTS out of it’s own settings.

How you fix this depends on what OS your on. I play on macOS so I know how to fix the problem there. On Windows I know the procedure but don’t have a broken HOTS to test on. So I’m half-guessing on how to fix it!

macOS

  • Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Blizzard/
  • Right click on the Heroes of the Storm folder
  • Change all the Privilege settings to Read & Write
  • Click on the … button and hit “Apply to enclosed items”

Windows

  • Navigate to your Documents Folder
  • Right click on Heroes of the Storm and go to the Security tab
  • Click Edit
  • Ensure that “Full Control” is checked for your user account and the Administrators group
  • Click OK to save any permission changes

Also, I don’t know if this is necessary but someone on Reddit said you need to launch the game with heroes_switcher_x64.exe afterward instead of starting from Battle.net.
I run the game through Steam and that’s how I start it anyway so I don’t know if that is a part of the fix or not

Thank you! This worked for me. I got all my old setting back! I run Mac OS. Just in case someone else needs this information there’s a few steps not included in your instructions:

macOS

  • Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Blizzard/
  • Right click on the Heroes of the Storm folder
  • Right click on “Get Info”
  • Right click on gold padlock icon at the bottom right of the Get Info window
  • Enter admin password
  • Change the user (and staff?) Sharing & Permissions settings to Read & Write
  • Right click on the gear button and right click “Apply to enclosed items”

If you repost these instructions I’ll click you for solving the problem, as is deserved, but I want the complete instructions in the ‘solved’ post :wink:
