Large FPS Drops/hitching

Hi,

I have been experiencing huge FPS drops(160fps to about 60 fps) and I can not seem to know why. I start the game with high Fps and only about a 20MS ping but then as soon as I start moving I notice hitching a little. Then when the first team fight happens I can dip to 60 FPS with extreme hitching, then just strolling the map I can notice significant hitching and the the FPS goes any where from 130-75 from this. Now those FPS numbers may seem high but the hitching makes the FPS almost meaningless TBH.

I have tried even limiting the FPS to 60 and still get fps drops and stuttering below that threshold.

For a system like this the performance that I am experience is almost unplayable.

System Specs:

  • 7700k 4.5 GHZ
  • RTX 3080,16GB 3200 MHZ ram
  • ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro NVME at 3.5 GBPS PCI-Express GEN 3
  • 165hz GSync monitor
  • Ping 20ms
  • Wired Internet connection at 500 Mbps Up/Down
  • game installed on SSD mentioned above where my windows is installed.
  • Thermals: 60° CPU and GPU
  • CPU usage at 25%
  • GPU usage at 20%
  • Location: East Coast of U.S.

Some of the common fixes I have already tried:

  • Disabled One Drive/Google Drive
  • Removed GeForce Experience
  • Lowered graphics settings
  • Turned audio settings down
  • Supersampled to a higher resolution for higher GPU usage
  • Updated to latest drivers, firmware and Windows update
  • Removed/ Enabled game bar
  • Enabled and disabled Game Mode
  • Gsync ON and OFF
  • In Nvidia control panel: Maximum performance on GPU, Low latency OFF, On, Ultra, Max Frame Rate ON and OFF.
  • Set CPU Affinity to 1 or 2 cores
  • Excluded HOTS and and Battle.net applications and resources from Antivirus
  • Removed Antivirus as a test
  • Set in game refresh rate to: Default,165,144,60
  • Removed AA
  • Tried Fullscreen & Windowed Fullscreen
  • Deleted Cache
  • Verified Files
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled
  • Have Battle.net close on app startup
  • Best connection is set in game for server

I may be missing some things I have tried but these are the ones I can remember.

If anyone can help/assist that may have resolved or helped the issue that would be greatly appreciated :grinning:

Thank for the suggestions, It will not allow me to post links, and I can only edit my original post, it will not allow me to reply, states something to the effect wait for other replies.

Hey Epic87,

Thanks for providing all of the detailed info. Stuttering during combat like this can be caused by connection issues. If the connection path between you and the game server is experiencing any packet loss or latency delays for example it may cause hitching or stuttering.

Can you test to see if the problem happens in Try Mode, with an unowned hero? Try Mode is the only game mode that is offline, so it would help rule out a connection issue if the problem does not happen when getting into combat in Try Mode.

I’d also recommend running a WinMTR test for the duration of a normal match where the problems are occurring.

  1. Download WinMTR
  2. Right-click on the downloaded .zip folder and select “Extract All”, to extract the files to a new folder.
  3. Open the new WinMTR-v092 folder that was created, then open the WinMTR_x64 folder.
  4. Right-click on the WinMTR application and select “Run as administrator”.
  5. Type the server IP 24.105.62.129 in the “Host” field. Click “Start” to begin the test.
  6. Launch the game and join a match. Allow the test to run for the full duration of the match, then click on “Stop” when you’re done playing.
  7. Click on “Copy Text to Clipboard”, paste the results here, then highlight everything and hit the </> button in the posting section so it will allow links.
Thank you for providing the suggestions above. I tried "Try Mode" and the same FPS drops happens.

When I select "</> " I get a message Sorry, your are not allowed to post links.

Below are the results of the program test:

best

Hey again,

Apologies for the late reply. The WinMTR looks great actually. The fact that it’s happening in Try Mode should indicate it’s not connection related though.

Lets try testing with a bit of an older Nvidia driver, I’d recommend trying 456.38

  1. Download DDU here
    • Click on the first link under “Announcements” titled Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU). Then click the “Official Download Here” link to start the download.
  2. Run the .exe file and extract the contents to the default location. Open the new folder and run the Display Driver Uninstaller.
  3. You will get a pop-up saying it is recommended to reboot in Safe Mode, feel free to ignore this if you are not familiar with how to get into Safe Mode. To start the removal process, click on the driver type on the right side first, then click “Clean and restart”
  4. Once the PC restarts, go ahead and download the 456.38 drivers here: Geforce Driver Results | NVIDIA
  5. Run the driver installer and use the default/recommended install steps.

Unfortunately same issue :frowning:

Howdy Epic87,

In this case, can we try testing the game with no other programs running in the background?
