Lag spikes/screen stuterring

Hey everyone,

After talking to a friend, he recommended I hit the forum with a post to see how my problem could be solved.

For the past few months now, my games have been complete nightmares. I have random lag spikes/screen stuttering happening throughout the game (regardless of teamfights or not).

At first I thought my PC was getting old so I changed a few pieces but the problem seems to persist. My buddy told me to run a WinMTR to see if there were any packet lost (I have no clue what this is) and the results are quite ok except for one where I get 69% lost (unable to link it, post won’t allow links). Tested with the IP provided for US West heroes servers (unable to link it, post won’t allow it), the server I believe I am connecting to according to CTRL + ALT + F (in-game).

What am I supposed to do? Is this the problem causing my lags ? How can this be solved ?

Thank you all for your time, I appreciate !

I have the very same issue - but on EU servers. I used to blame my mobile-connection i use - but HotS is the only game know to me, that pukes itself.

I also tried to have an infinite google-ping going. I can run it for hours with never any considerable spikes (maybe 100 max 200ms spike and instantly resolved the next ping) - but while i am on hots the ping also freaks out.

And the best part is, at every game it says at the end “Game has ended” and i get even a leaver-penalty - what i think is not my wrongdoing.

Believe it or not, the cause of the stuttering problem is not what you will expect. It turned out the number of Sound Channels affected the performance. The frame rate issues and stuttering disappeared after I set the number of Sound Channels to 32.

It’s related to the CPU and it’s likely related to how the game engine is handling sound events. HotS uses the Starcraft 2 game engine and it is notorious for utilizing CPU cores poorly by using only 1 to 2 cores by design. If you were wondering if this issue also affected me in Starcraft 2, the answer is yes. Hover your mouse on each and every single setting to see if it says it’s dependent on CPU performance and turn it down to test. I personally found that every other setting didn’t make a difference except the in-game Sound Channel settings.

The Sound Channels issue is actually a regression because years ago I used to be able to max out the Sound Channels and every setting on Starcraft 2 and HotS and I would not experience a problem. Blizzard is likely not going to fix this problem anymore since these games have been moved onto the Classics team for maintenance, but it’s would be nice if the team really fixed this.
