How do placements actually work?

Hi All,

I’ve been playing HOTS for years and i have yet to understand the mystery behind placement matches. Does anyone have any real/inside information on what is actually happening to determine your rank after the 10 matches?

Here are some possible scenarios:

  1. HOTS uses placements as a chance to do a “big move” toward your hidden MMR. So for example if you have negative rank adjustments every game, it might secretly dock a division for you at the beginning of placements (or vice versa for positive rank adjustments)

  2. Placement matches are weighted heavier than normal matches (i.e, each game counts for 3x games)

  3. The first few games are very heavy weighted and then carry less weight toward the end of placements (i’ve heard this before).

What is actually happening?

Noone knows. Noone will ever know.

All I speculate, based on the communications about the Overwatch-system, is that placements tend to always place you slightly lower than your previous ratings.

Pretty much like normal games for people who play HL normally.

First time you get seeded and might have more MMR flexibility.

No big climbs.

You already know, the game uses your MMR to slightly adjust you up or down in any placement after your initial placement. Its really not that hard to understand.

It is actually pretty hard to understand, because its been very unpredictable. I’ve had a season where i lost 5 divisions on a 4-6 placement, and this past season lost 2 divisions on a 4-6.

Ok so let’s go with the slight MMR adjustment argument for this season and assume i was adjusted -2 ranks for losing my last placement game. Now i’m steady at zero. I continue on and lose my next 13 out 15 games and then receive a NEGATIVE rank adjustment. Wouldn’t a rank adjustment naturally want to pull me UP toward MMR after a huge losing streak? Nope, its negative instead.

Your MMR deviates from your rank in all games, not just placements.

Placements reset your rank to your MMR.

sure they do because the devs have commented on how it works.

placements in the case of existing ranked ppl are just like normal matches. you gain points MMR points which places your non-visible ranking higher or lower.

MMR points normally go up slowly and ranked points (visible rank) go up fairly quick depending on your games.

your points go up or down a set amount as a base amount. however, at the START of a season your ‘certainty’ rating or how sure the system is that you are where you are suppose to be is reduced. which gives you a bit of wiggle room for faster MMR growth in something like the first 20 or so matches.

on occasion they have set the certainty back even farther than normal. like when the PBMM/2017 season fail happened. they had to do a lot of rollbacks and then as a result ppl lost time. so to quickly adjust they set ppls certainty a lot lower than normal.

I know. It doesn’t work. First time TL with 8 wins and I’m a Dia 1. Put me in Gold 3. Absolute nightmare.

Its working then, first time placers in either of the ranked modes have a maximum seed of Gold 5.

When this limitation didnt exist, i was Gold 3 in HL and Placed Dia 2 in TL, we either have to climb or get more noobs and smurfs in Diamond.

This is also why TL ranks are still a joke, so many lucky placers.

Rainbow games where nobody even belongs in their rainbow ranks.

TL is basically just vs AI where MMR doesnt exist but you get to draft and play vs players.

Some TL GMs are worse than Diamond and Platinum players.

I discount TL ranks entirely but it just infuriates me that I either have to climb back up with TL whose matchmaking is broken beyond all belief or wait 20 minutes in HL que.

Of course it wouldn’t be a problem if TL had actually ranked me CLOSER to my proven skill level. instead it gimps me with with technicalities and rules because it couldn’t be bother to go in and fix MM for the past 5 years.

Yeah, it placed me in Diamond when i was truly Gold, i have since climbed to Diamond in HL after 400 or so games, but not because i was a Diamond player to begin with, i became one on the way as i learnt more about the game and drafting and such.

If someone says climbing is too hard and they had to play 500 games to get to their true rank, they either learnt nothing in the ~160 hours they played and the ranks are too hard to climb or they never were Platinums or whatever when they started and learnt and their rank mirrored their learning.

Edit: If your rank is static and you dont move its most probably because you either just cannot learn more or yiur reflexes are too slow to do so.

Learn more and climb or blame it all on yiur teammates when 20-30% of the games actually are your teammates and the enemies doing stuff, if youre better than the average in your rank you can affect the 80-70% of the rest.

But yeah the Diamond placement really showed how the placements were broken and the rank cap is just a bandaid to fix it nothing more.

Using HL rank when placing in TL after like 100 games in HL shouldnt be a problem though and it wouldnt need a rank cap IMO.

I’ve climbed from Plat 5 to Dia 1 and stayed there for the past few seasons because I stopped ranking. I was satisfied and I couldn’t commit any more time into breaking Masters so I know the game well. The following literally happened and I fail to see how I had any say in the matter. I climbed up to Plat 5 and was literally pulled back down to Gold 1 through a string of Nova picks, Smash Varians, Abas, Kt’s (both) that have no idea how to play, and a myriad of other nonsensical things.

It’s not even about “true ranking” when all of these factors are outside of your control. And yes I been communicating to no avail. I’m either muted, called toxic, or simply ignored. Too many people been catapulted into to Gold because the system is flat out broken.

Potatoes roll downhill and at some point you get less and less of them.

Personally i have climbed from Silver 2 to Diamond 3 so far, hardest was the break from Silver to gold because of the amoubt of potatoes and my lack of skill and a small hero pool back then. 200 games to get from Silver to Gold after borked placements in the reset season, i was gold for 2 season before i got placed in Silver, then 400 to get to diamond from gold.

Lol now that all that progress and flush it down the toilet because the ranking system decided to push you all the way back and to play with potatoes out of some dumb technicality. I find it arbitrary that instead of pushing lower players higher they push higher players lower and expect it to accomplish anything different.

I know it’s TL and all but between the broken MM there, a unbelievably long que in HL, and whatever the hell QM is Heroes is heading straight into the ground.

Yeah it really set me off so i got determined to climb out back then took a while with my limited roster and no idea about camp timings but good enoigh micro was enough i guess.

They dont really do that, back then i Placed in my previous rank twice, Gold 3 but after the last reset when it was “fixed” it placed me in Silver… They just messed up the whole season for alot of people, having to play 30 placements wasnt even the worst of it.

Yeah TL is basically just QM with a draft even more now than it was before the solo que option.

I get around 20-40s ques there but the games are bad as teams have masters and silvers in the party and i cant enjoy it, just like i couldnt enjoy QM i stopped playing TL as well.

HL is basically all i do now, sometimes i feel spicy and play AA Zeratul in QM still.

And even as HL isnt perfect, atleast 70-80% of the games are pretty well balanced and i can enjoy the games even if i lose.

In TL its about 20%
