Heroes gender option for all heroes

What if we had a gender option, and pick male or female version of a hero, free with hero purchase.

Would make sense for the Diablo III protagonist heroes given how they were already available in both genders back in Diablo III.

Makes less sense for some, especially given how they are not subject to earthly gender distinctions… For example Dehaka, who despite being a “he” has no problem throwing around clones of himself in SC2. Or Probius who is literally a machine.

Or established characters who needs to be specific gender like Kerrigan and Zagara.

Zagara falls into the same problem as Dehaka. Although referred to as female and shows female characteristics they technically have no recognizable gender due to their alien nature. Both Zagara and Dehaka can spawn minions by themselves. Abathur is the same, who is referred to as a male but also spawns minions.

Technically a male Kerrigan design could be made. As her design is based on a humans who do have distinct genders. This is very much like how Diablo has both male and female designs as his body is based on the host he occupies, which in Diablo II was the son of Leoric while in Diablo III was his daughter Leah.

In her legendary skins Zagara is clearly female, so also male version, tho I thought about probius or abba, they can use pink skin and flowers on their head, u know, like in cartoons.

That sounds like it would take a lot of modeling work for an extremely minor benefit, especially if it was made free. These types of things don’t just spawn out of the woodwork, there are people who need to spend time making them, and the team is already rather small and limited.

I like the idea, but it would create skin issues since they need to create two separate skins for male and female

Ignoring the work of models themselves there are also other issues:

visual design space/silhouette - you can’t add heroes which look too much like another, as demonstrated with Nova’s Widowmaker skin. See below

clarity - players need to be able to recognize heroes quickly. Having to know two models per hero doubles the amount of existing stuff that needs to be memorized

Skins - You’d either need to add the original model’s skins to the new model OR simply not add any. The former is a tremendous amount of work and the latter would disappoint people.
Also, this would double the number of possible heroes which get a skin. What this translates to is fewer heroes getting skins because they need to do both the male and female version of each skin

Voice over - you’d need to add voice overs for all the heroes.

Design space - Sort of similar to the clarity issue. If the devs ever want to go back and add another version of the barbarian or DH or whatever, they couldn’t since having 3 barbarians would get really confusing.

It’s a neat idea, but not very practical. Especially with the dev team gutted.

Well they will always add new features so gender option will help with keeping things new. Maybe they will use the idea when needed.
