[HC] Dr. Boom, Mad Genius

Hello everyone! This is my concept for Dr. Boom, the well-known goblin scientist from World of Warcraft and Hearthstone. I’ve mostly drawn on his Hearthstone appearances for inspiration since he has a lot more going for him there, though of course he still features his iconic Boom Bot spam.

Dr. Boom is a ranged bruiser with a combination of durability and mobility. He utilizes a unique resource, and must choose between using his abilities sparingly to activate their powerful Omega effects or casting them more frequently to summon many dangerous Boom Bots. Dr. Boom also uses a Charge-based heroic ability available from level 1 that allows him to re-position himself on the map and gain a burst of power for a fight.

Trait: Boom Bots
Passive:
Whenever Dr. Boom casts a basic ability, he generates a Boom Bot at his current location. Boom Bots initially prioritize the last target damaged by Dr. Boom for 1 second, then wander toward the nearest enemy. Boom Bots have 156 (+4% per level) Health and a maximum duration of 8 seconds. Upon reaching an enemy, being destroyed, or expiring, they explode for 78 (+4% per level) damage in a small area.

Additionally, Dr. Boom uses a unique resource called Power, which regenerates faster than Mana but has a lower maximum and doesn’t scale. His basic abilities receive additional Omega effects when cast with full Power.

Finally, Dr. Boom’s heroic ability utilizes a Charge system and is available from level 1. Basic attacks generate 0.25% Charge, Boom Bots generate 0.5% Charge if they damage a heroic enemy, and each basic ability generates Charge in its own way.

Cooldown: 2 seconds
Cost: 40 Power

Dr. Boom blasts a ray of destructive energy in a target direction after 0.25 seconds, dealing 128 (+4% per level) damage to the first enemy hit. Generates 0.5% Charge if it hits an enemy, increased to 1.5% if that enemy was a hero.

When cast with full Power, Zap Cannon’s Omega effect activates, piercing all enemies in its path. Generates Charge for every enemy hit, up to a maximum of 3%.

W: Blast Shield
Cooldown: 1 second
Cost: 30 Power

Dr. Boom deploys a protective barrier on his armor, gaining a Shield that absorbs 110 (+4% per level) damage over 3 seconds. When Blast Shield is recast, its duration is refreshed and the Shield values stack. Each cast of Blast Shield increases its cost by 10 Power, resetting once Dr. Boom reaches full Power again. Generates 0.25% Charge for every 50 (+4% per level) damage it absorbs.

When cast with full Power, Blast Shield’s Omega effect activates, increasing its initial Shield value to 330 (+4% per level) but doubling its Power cost and placing it on a 3 second cooldown. Upon expiration, the Shield detonates, dealing 135 (+4% per level) damage to all enemies in a large area around Dr. Boom and 55 (+4% per level) damage to Dr. Boom himself.

E: Jetpack Blast
Cooldown: 4 seconds
Cost: 60 Power

Dr. Boom fires up his jetpack and launches himself a medium distance in a target direction, dealing 92 (+4% per level) damage to all non-heroes in his path. Upon hitting a wall or an enemy hero, Dr. Boom is Stunned for 0.5 seconds by the recoil and causes an explosion in a medium area, dealing 92 (+4% per level) damage to all enemies within. Generates 1% Charge for every enemy hero damaged, up to 3%.

When cast with full Power, Jetpack Blast’s Omega effect activates, increasing the radius of its explosion by 50%, Stunning all affected enemies for 1 second, and increasing its travel speed by 100%.

Additionally, the Boom Bot generated by this ability appears at Dr. Boom’s final location, not his casting location.

R: Boomship Deployment
Cooldown: N/A
Cost: 150 Power, 100% Charge

After a 3 second channel interrupted by damage, Dr. Boom retreats via jetpack to the Boomship. For 10 seconds, he can select any visible area on the map to deploy there in his battle mech with full Power after a 3 second delay, restoring 648 (+4% per level) Health to himself and dealing 78 (+4% per level) damage to all enemies in a small area around his landing location. While in his battle mech, Dr. Boom gains 10 Armor, has 10% increased ability power, and all of his abilities activate their Omega effect regardless of his current Power. Also, his basic attack has its range reduced to melee and damage increased to 177 (+4% per level) per hit. After 12 seconds, Dr. Boom is forcefully ejected from his battle mech and it explodes, dealing 78 (+4% per level) damage to all enemies in a medium area around it. This final explosion also occurs if Dr. Boom dies during this time.

The Boomship remains above the location where it dropped Dr. Boom for 12 seconds afterward, offering aerial support based on his heroic talent choice.

Talents:

Tier 1 | Level 1

  • Bloom Bots - Enemy heroes damaged by Boom Bots are marked for 4 seconds. Dr. Boom’s basic attack consumes this mark to deal 10% more damage and generate 5 Power; if Dr. Boom has full Power, it deals 20% more damage instead.
  • Demolitionist’s Cookbook - Blast Shield’s Omega effect restores 5 Power to Dr. Boom for every enemy hero it damages. If at least 3 are damaged, its regular Shields are increased to 130 (+4% per level) and its Omega effect’s Shields are increased to 390 (+4% per level) for 6 seconds.
  • E.V.I.L. Recruitment - Blast Shield also grants all allied heroes near Dr. Boom a Shield that absorbs 130 (+4% per level) over 3 seconds; this effect can only occur once every 14 seconds. Earning a takedown resets Blast Shield’s cost and refreshes this effect’s cooldown.

Tier 2 | Level 4

  • Kaboom Bots - Boom Bots can now leap up to 2 units in distance if it will cause them to reach their current target. Additionally, their explosion radius will chain to the furthest enemy from them within 2 units when they explode; this bonus radius does not double damage.
  • Refracto-Graviton Ray - Zap Cannon now reflects off of walls up to 3 times. The travel distance after hitting a wall is the remaining length of the ability plus 20% of its original range. Hitting the same enemy multiple times deals 50% less damage each time.
  • Overtuned Afterburners - Jetpack Blast also deals 92 (+4% per level) damage to enemies in a cone behind Dr. Boom and Stuns them for 0.5 seconds. Its Omega effect increases the length and width of this cone by 50%, and also leaves a trail of flames in Dr. Boom’s path for 3 seconds that deals 22 (+4% per level) damage every 0.5 seconds to enemies inside. Neither of these effects generate additional Charge.

Tier 3 | Level 7

  • Micro-Squad Deployment - Whenever Dr. Boom damages or Stuns himself, his suit releases 3 Microbots to defend him. Microbots will first seek out the nearest non-marked enemy, latching on to them to deal 60 (+4% per level) damage, reduce their Physical Armor by 10 for 3 seconds, and mark them for 10 seconds. If Microbots have no non-marked enemies within 7 units, they instead return to reinforce Dr. Boom’s suit, granting him 5 Armor stacking with other sources for 1 second; multiple Microbots extend the duration of the Armor instead of stacking its effects.
  • Explosive Crescendo - Blast Shield now knocks enemies in close range of Dr. Boom back 1 unit when cast. Additionally, Blast Shield’s Omega explosion deals 50% more damage to enemies at the very edge of its radius and Stuns them for 0.75 seconds.
  • Nanomachines, Son! - While Dr. Boom has at least 120 (+4% per level) Shields from Blast Shield, nanomachines repair and reinforce his suit, restoring 32 (+4% per level) Health every second and granting him immunity to Roots and Slows.

Tier 4 | Level 10

  • Boom Labs Tech - Every 3 seconds, The Boomship deploys a defensive drone on the ally hero under it that has taken the most damage within the last 3 seconds, granting them a Shield that absorbs 180 (+4% per level) damage over 3 seconds.
  • Plague of Wrath - Enemies under The Boomship are influenced by the Plague Lord of Wrath, causing any Stuns, Taunts, Roots, Silences, or Blinds to be replaced with a Taunt onto the nearest allied hero for the same duration.
  • Galakrond the Unbreakable - The Boomship is accompanied by Galakrond, who will select the enemy hero with the highest health percentage under the Boomship every 3 seconds to launch a fireball at. The fireball lands after 0.5 seconds and burns the ground for 2 seconds in a medium area, dealing 34 (+4% per level) damage every 0.5 seconds to enemies within.

Tier 5 | Level 13

  • Delivery Drone - A delivery drone now follows 3.5 units behind Dr. Boom at all times. Whenever an enemy hero is under the delivery drone, it will attempt to abduct them, Rooting them for 1.25 seconds; if the hero is Stunned during this time, it will also pull them 2 units toward Dr. Boom. This effect can only occur once every 9 seconds.
  • Magneto-Pulsar Ray - If Zap Cannon hits an enemy with the latter 90% of its length, it explodes in a burst of energy, dealing 68 (+4% per level) bonus damage in a small area and Slowing the movement speed all affected enemies by 25% for 1.5 seconds. Zap Cannon’s Omega effect causes this to occur at the end of its length instead. This effect does not generate Charge.
  • Pocket Rocket - Upon being Stunned or Rooted, Dr. Boom casts an untalented, non-Omega Jetpack Blast at the nearest enemy hero. This can only occur once every 12 seconds.

Tier 6 | Level 16

  • Emergency Power Reserve - Upon dropping below 20 Power, Dr. Boom taps into his emergency reserve, generating 180 Power over 6 seconds. However, this causes his systems to malfunction for 10 seconds, dealing 32 (+4% per level) damage to himself whenever he casts an ability. This effect has a 60 second cooldown.
  • Kadoom Bots - Boom Bots now apply stacks of Ka-DOOM to enemy heroes they damage, lasting for 4 seconds, stacking up to 5 times, and refreshing duration. Enemies affected by Ka-DOOM take bonus damage from Boom Bots equal to 1% of their maximum Health per stack.
  • Omega Protocol - Dr. Boom’s Omega effects also grant him an extra buff: Zap Cannon gives 10% increased damage dealt, Blast Shield gives 10 Armor, and Jetpack Blast gives 10% increased movement speed. Omega Protocol lasts for 4 seconds, only one effect can be active at a time, and applying an effect different from the currently active Omega Protocol increases its magnitude by 100%.

Tier 7 | Level 20

  • Boom’s Scheme - If Dr. Boom hasn’t cast any abilities in the last 3 seconds, his next basic ability triggers its Omega effect regardless of his current Power. If he hasn’t cast any abilities in the last 6 seconds, his next basic ability cast also grants him Protected for 1.5 seconds.
  • Room Bots - Boom Bots spawned by Omega abilities have 50% more Health and contain an extra Boom Bot inside of them that spawns 2 seconds after they die.
  • Deployment: Zilliax - Boomship Deployment now magnetizes Zilliax to Dr. Boom’s mech, enhancing it greatly. Dr. Boom’s mech lands in 1 second, his landing and self-destruct damage are increased by 50%, and any abilities cast at full Power heal Dr. Boom for 30% of all damage they deal to enemy heroes.
  • Tricked-Out Ride - Boomship Deployment gains the effects of all Tier 4 talents, but now requires 120% Charge to cast.
