Game freezing when loading in new assets during gameplay (year long issue, not only latest patch)

Hello!
I’m having a problem with the game freezing for an amount of time (.5 to 3 seconds) whenever the game loads in a new still unused asset, such as a model used during a hero skill, or even icons shown on lootbox items. To add to this long time problem, the new weather effects caused every single new snowflake to freeze my game, making the first few minutes just a constant cycle of freeze - 4fps - freeze.

My game also freezes and has now started also briefly disconnecting me when the match starts while the hero models load in. Disconnects do not happen during teamfights, though, just FPS drops to 0. Sounds always play normally.

This problem has persisted for around a year (I kinda just accepted it as I can finish a match when the freezing disappears towards the end), and I’ve even completely upgraded my PC during this time, yet still get the FPS drops. I’m kinda getting bored of it now.

The stuttering is always present due to visual effects being added to abilities over time, but most noticeable when a game has just started and players are throwing their first punches left and right. Level 10 is always a freeze-fest because everyone gets new abilities. I play mostly Brawl, so the first few minutes are very annoying to get through.

Some examples:

  • Varian casting his Lion’s Fang (short freeze on first cast)
  • Junkrat launching up to the sky on his rocket (medium freeze on first cast)
  • Alexstrazsa turning into a dragon (“time to get up and do some stretches, you might die anyway during the freeze” on first cast, noticeably shorter freeze after first cast)

The freezes happen in every game, doesn’t matter if the same heroes appear in consecutive matches.

My setup (all new components from Oct 2019):

  • Intel® Core™ i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz
  • 16GB RAM DDR4
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER

Dual monitor setup:

  • 1st Monitor ASUS PB258Q, 2K 60Hz
  • 2nd Monitor AOC 27G2G4, FHD 144Hz, used for playing HOTS

Game is installed on a Kingston 1TB SSD.

I have tried the following:

  • Clearing the Heroes Cache
  • Reinstalling Windows & HOTS.
  • Playing with only a single monitor plugged in.
  • Setting graphics options to Low/Highest, no change in stutter
  • Disabling the Xbox Game bar
  • Disabling GeForce Experience GameStream & Instant Replay functions
  • Always updating my GPU drivers
  • Disabling all antivirus programs in the background

More info available on request. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What kind of storage is Heroes installed on (HDD or SSD?).

Heroes is somewhat dependant on I/O calls (when it asks the operating system to get stuff) to happen quickly.
In practical terms, running the game off a dedicated storage drive (general game drive, so only one process (= heroes ) active at a time) may help.

Another attempt is to open Task Manager (Crtl + Shift + Esc), rightclick "Heroes of the Storm"→ Go To Details → Rightclick "Set Priority" → click "High"

Kinda lost in the wall of text so understandable…

The drive is dedicated to games.
I have different game platform launchers running off of the same drive, but no other programs. Usually I turn of all but Steam. BattleNet launcher is among these launchers, and I have that set to auto-off itself when a game is launched (one of the tricks I tried last year).

I’ve actually tried the priority trick too, didn’t really see a difference…

Woops. Unless that SSD is close to dead, it should respond in single digit miliseconds.

Then I am out of ideas. A 9900k running at stock speeds should be way more than enough to not stutter.

Well, I have two more ideas both of which are cost prohibitive:
  1. Stick Windows and the Game into a Virtual machine running off a RAM-Disk
  2. Get a SAN setup, cache files in that RAM and buy 100Gbit networking gear.

The SSD is about a year old I think. Haven’t had stutter issues in any other game, so I don’t think it’s the reason.

Haha, seems like quite an ordeal to get a F2P game working as it should.

Hope to get some input on Blizz’s part before I commit to anything drastic. I realize they have their hands full with the new patch issues, so could take a while.

Thanks for the input so far, MazeFrame! Appreciate it.

I have the same problem as MrRightclick.
I found out that this is due to some incompatibility with the nvidia RTX 2060. When I change the video card to GTX 1060 it doesn’t give this problem.
Any solution?
