Confirm dropping support for older (Metal-less) machines

With today’s patch (Patch 48.0), it appears I am no longer able to run Heroes on my beloved mid-2010 27" iMac (macOS 10.13.6) because it does not have metal support. Would someone confirm that it is now officially impossible to run Heroes on older macs that do not have Metal capability? Thanks.

im concerned about this to, i have an iMac from mid 2011 runs on (macOS 10.12.6) and i dont have any plans to change my mac soon, i hope we get some kind of support because it feels really bad to loose a game like heroes of the storm.

Howdy!

We list why this change occurred in our sticky post Here.

Thank you.

This really sucks.
My specs are macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Mid 2011
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 – 16GB Ram – AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

After the patch, I guess my MAC fell short of the required specifications needed to play this game – major bummer now. Will there be a fix or option button available to disable the requirement of METAL graphics?

My girlfriend and I along with a couple of my close friends play this game 3 to 4 times a week. Please find a fix to this. We would really hate for us to discontinue playing this game.

Mine dropped off too. No wonder their stock price is down 35% from last year. Bad decisions from the inside lead to disinterest. This is a way to push consumers away from your products, Blizzard. (been buying Blizzard products since 1996, original D1!)

You just need to update the latest OS. And/or reinstall the game. You have much better specs than me and I can still play fine.

Well, your computer is probably 8-10 years old. What did you expect?

it worked yesterday … One Update and we can’t play anymore because we have " old " Mac ? Hope they’ll try to fix the problem … I’m quite sad…
Best regards from France … where I try to find a solution to continue playing that game…

such a boomer that you buy a mac thinking that at the price the mac will last more than 10 years and apple just say that macs older than 8 years are obsolete, you cant repair it in apple official places any more and now developers turn their backs on 2011 and 2010 macs.

I didn’t mean this thread as a complaint. Rather, I just wanted confirmation that it is now no longer possible to play Heroes on the older macs. It makes sense to drop support for machines that are 10 years old.

I disagree… you can’t exclude a part of players , in an update just because they can’t afford to buy a new CPU every 2 years… I bought that kind of CPU not to change it every 2years… And I won’t buy a new one … I also play Diablo3 , if they do the same with that one , I m done… and I ll go back to PS4

I would expect to be able to continue playing a game that ran fine on my 2010 iMac for the past 4 years. It’s not like HOTS just came out. SC2 continues to run fine and I’m guessing WOW would as well. Wouldn’t it be possible to just add metal support as an option without removing support for older systems? This game is sinking quickly and they need all the players they can get.

We can confirm this game is DEAD

Ok thanks. I think it would have been better to give your mac gamers advance notice of an upcoming patch that would increase system requirements. The way it was done is too abrupt. Thanks again

Similar problem here. My iMac is mid 2011 and doesn´t support Metal. It`s pitty that till yesterday we could play Heroes just well and today we can´t. Today´s quick patch gave some hope but apparently there are no changes on this matter. Keeping on touch till I decide what to do. Regards from Argentina.

Please change or revert this nonsense. Game worked fine before the patch, D3 & SC2 still do. Not buying a new computer just to play this game.

is there not a way to make metal support only an option? Newer macs could play the game but with bad optimization. If in the menu there was an option to switch to metal (i think there already was but was more complicated to do) it could allow both old mac user and new mac user to play the game. It is just weird that i could play the game at high quality one day, and the day after it just doesn´t open because an update…

Hey guys, i’m really not happy about this update either. I was in the game since the Beta and now i’m kick out by an update. I will try to get a better computer to play this game but it’s not the best way to keep this small community. :frowning:

so, i’m trying to reinstall the game, but i think the game will not work anyway. Processor 23Ghz intel core i5, 8gb ram, graphics - intel hd graphics 3000 512 mb… Maybe i can change something on my computer… !

I envy all those who are unable to play the game anymore.

As if winning wasn’t difficult enough, mac players in particular have to fight with fatal, game breaking bugs, annoyances and crashes since years. I suspect that the average winrate of mac players is well below 50%. I have lost around 25000 rank points on draft crashes alone. No, not 2500.

It’s much worse when the game crashes in the match though. Which i have experienced many HUNDREDS of times.

Disabling opengl is unnecessary and borderline criminal. Hey, it’s a f2p game and the customers have ZERO rights to complain. How convenient.

I have read several posts already that blame apple for this. Because it’s THEIR fault. They are dropping opengl. Right? “This change ensures compatibility with macOS Catalina” Nonsense. Opengl isn’t going anywhere. Oh, did you just say you can’t play hots anymore? “Thanks for playing and enjoy the games!”

I have submitted well over 800 crash reports over the last 2 years. 100% pointless. Crashes that are easy to reproduce every single time. You will not be heard, as any mac player can tell you that visited the blizzard forums. A blizzard f2p game is by definition not eligible for technical support outside of payments. Try to submit a ticket. You can’t.

But i got through once. I had to follow the instructions of a completely unqualified “blizzard game master”, and expose all my macs details with a full system report. I had to fall to my knees and thank him for this exception. Needless to say he had no idea about anything at all. A charade with the sole purpose to shield engineering.

Toxicity. It is part of the layout. It’s encouraged in every facet of the games design. It could be different. A playground for sociopaths. Who won’t get flushed out, no matter how many thousands highly detailed reports i submit.

After almost 20k matches i have concluded that matchmaking is not based on fairness but on player retention.

After 4 years of tormenting myself i’ve had enough. It never gets better. NEVER. I’m willing to bet everything i have on this. I have uninstalled hots and i really hope i can keep it that way. I wish my mac was from 2011.
