Greetings and Welcome to the Concept Design Contest(CDC) Reboot #1!
This is the spiritual successor to the original CDC, and we’re very excited to have you here. For this competition, over the course of 4 weeks, you will design a hero which will be judged by both Waterlong and myself. To enter, just leave a comment below, and include a link to your submission in that comment. For those of you who are veterans of the original CDC, the rules will be slightly different for the reboot. Allow me to go over them with you now.- All submissions must be entered by July 14th by 11:59 MST
- While each CDC will have a theme, it is by no means a restriction. If you have a really good idea, we want to see it. That being said, there will be bonus points for those who do follow the theme, as we want to encourage you to explore outside your comfort zone.
- Points for weeks 1-3 do not matter. They should just be taken as a general indicator of where your hero stands at that point in time.
At the end of week 4, we will go through each individual score and declare the winner.
The theme for this CDC is:
Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Like Ana and Deckard Cain, there are many Heroes who are reaching the end of their life-cycle, yet still have much fighting spirit. Your job is to create and design a hero concept with these things in mind. It doesn't matter if they look young, as long as they're old at heart.
Below is a schedule for how each week will play out.
Sign-Ups Open
Sunday, July 4th
Sign ups begin here! Leave a comment below declaring your intent to join in, which you will edit later to include a link to your submission. Anyone is welcome to sign up except for anyone who may be judging.
Week One
Wednesday, July 7th - Wednesday, July 14th
This week is for the base concept. We will be looking at the abilities and the role that you declare your hero to be. Our feedback will go over the base concept and how it fits with the intended role. You can still sign up during this week, as long as it’s before the deadline for the end of Week One.
Week Two
Wednesday, July 14th - Wednesday, July 21st
This week is dedicated to talents. We want to see a creative and fully fleshed out talent tree with tiers in order. We will consider whether or not the talents fit with the character, and how they augment the base character. We will also comment on any changes made since Week One, however they will not be the focus.
Week Three
Wednesday, July 21st - Wednesday, July 28th
This week is dedicated to fluff that fleshes out your character, such as: Skins, voice lines, sprays or any other touches you want to include. We will consider whether or not the fluff fits with the character, and how they interact with the environment around them. We will also comment on any changes since Week Two, however they will not be the focus.
Week Four
Wednesday, July 28th - Wednesday, August 4th
This week is your last chance to make any changes to your concept. Major changes made in this week are super risky and not recommended. At the end of this week, your concepts will be finalized and no further changes will be accepted.
Finale
Thursday, August 5th
The judges will post their final scores and comments, and declare the winner and runner up as well as any honorable mentions.
The scoring system below is a guide to what we are looking at each week, and will offer a brief explanation about the criteria. Remember, the points for weeks 1-3 are not considered towards your final score.
Creativity:
This is how creative the design of the character is, and how creative the actual choice was. While a big name will certainly win you some points for awe factor, a particularly clever choice and design may edge out the victory.Thematics:
These points are mainly for how well the ideas fit with the character. A demon that is a butcher of man would not really be a gentle healer than encourages his allies to do better. Make sure that when creating your character, you will also look towards what they would actually be doing.Interaction:
We will determine how the characters abilities flow with each other, and influence the battlefield around them. The character's strengths and weaknesses will also be considered here. Killing your entire team to power yourself may be fun for you, but it would not be fun for your allies, and the character design as a whole would suffer for it. Consider your character in the game, fighting against him and alongside him.
Bonus points will be awarded on Week 4 for:
Presentation:
We will determine how your character is presented, and whether or not your idea was shown clearly. This does not necessarily mean good spelling and grammar (although it does help), but how you convey the information. (Max of +1)Theme:
We will determine if your character design is follows the theme of the CDC, and award points for it, as well as trying something new. (Max of +1)Each category is worth 5 points, with the bonus category adding an extra 2, making the max score a 17.
We look forward to seeing your entries, and wish you all luck in your endeavors.
