CDC #7 General Davis

CAROLINA DAVIS

DOMINION GENERAL

Ranged bruiser
Starcraft

Contest theme: Davis combines both new and not very often used mechanics. Those include: Independent talent tree(unlike Chromie her talent tree depends heavily upon players performance), switching talents (and her E ability) to really adapt on the fly, ability to improve her stats by playing well, 3 ultimates, special mount (but no Medivh´s get out of jail free card), companion/pet in the Viking and reducing her death timer.

General Carolina Davis was a Terran Dominion military officer and later leader of the Defenders of Man. She was not known for her patience or affection. She was strong supporter of Arcturus Mengsk and member of the Sons of Korhal.

Now she is piloting her powerfull mech the Balius and she is ready to serve the Terran Dominion in the Nexus.

Davis is a ranged bruiser who can both deal and take punishment. Her trait allows her to get her talents sooner or later than rest of her team depending on her performace or sacrifice the Spare parts to heal herself or even reduce her death timer. She is also able to adapt to various threats she may encounter.

COMBAT TRAIT
SPARE PARTS

Enemy heroes- 5 Spare parts
Destroyed forts/towers- 10 Spare parts
Enemy mercenaries- 3 Spare parts

Spare Parts is a very interesting and unique mechanic compared to what’s in the game already. Though it does share some similarities to Chromie’s trait, the fact that Spare Parts are somewhat performance based and can be spent in many different ways differentiates it. Davis’ basic abilties and heroics are all fairly interesting.

Cohesiveness - 4/5
Though Davis’ abilities are all nice, none of them feel like they have particularly impactful interactions with each other. For example, Nemesis Missile can stun enemies into Cover Fire, but Cover Fire is already easy to land with a wide area and the ability to move Davis and the direction of Cover Fire while casting.

Thematic - 5/5
Davis’ kit does feel like it matches a specialized Viking very well, and the spare part mechanics feel true to her co-op mission in Starcraft 2. On top of that, the way Spare Parts introduce a brand new way to interact with talent trees, as well as providing tradeoffs when used for healing or respawn timer reduction, feels game changing in a way that matches the contest’s theme.

Interaction - 4/5
Looking at Davis’ kit, it feels like she just does WAY too much damage. There’s damage on every ability, and a lot of them are quite high. Especially considering that she is a ranged bruiser, not a squishy melee assassin, these numbers do feel overtuned. Besides specific numbers, though, Davis’ kit does look fine, with nothing negatively impacting her team and most abilities being skillshots with counterplay.

Ok, thank you for the review.

To be fair I havn´t really tought about comboing her abilities because I want them (and all of her kit to be fair) to be more reactive to both allies and enemies than about setting up and stuff, so Davis would work great as a follow up or counter hero.

Well, I can´t really disagree here having no real life data. I definitely didn´t intended her to be top level damage delaer. She should be better at prolonged fights rather then burst. I will make adjustments to that.

It’s quite an interesting character to choose, and the kit you pulled off really does come together quite well. While I think the Spare Parts mechanic must be a bit too snowball-y, I think the concept introduces some cool new abilities and takes on abilities. It was a bold move to make the third ability locked behind tier 2, but I think it works out here to great effect. The multiple heroics is also quite interesting, though each individual heroic is a little bit less interesting than I would hope for. Overall, the talents are also more than just boosts to certain aspects, making the character more engaging. Some talents that could use some work are Resources of War, Regenerative Biosteel, and Efficient Repair.

Cohesiveness - 4/5

The kit flows together actually very well overall, with the bonuses from the heroics to the base abilities being interesting, and it’s cool to see how each of the E abilities interacts with the base kit. I do think the kit could use a bit more than being carried for the rough interactions, and spare parts, and the talents don’t really offer too much in that regard. While some talents are pretty cool, like Air Raid and Air Superiority, I think more can be done to encourage ability combos. Finally, I think that most of Tier 5’s supportive push feels a bit odd within the design.

Thematic - 5/5

I would have never considered General Davis in the Balius for a character, but this design really does fit that idea quite well. The build-your-character design, with an alternate take on talent trees and the ability to switch talents, all falls within the contest theme quite nicely.

Interaction - 4/5

While it is true that most of the abilities and effects have counterplay to them, with several skillshots and the spare parts mechanic being counterable, I do think that some of the abilities can be a bit oppressive. Namely, the giant area effect of Cover Fire and most specifically the targeted 1.25 second stun on Multi-Lock Weapons System, can get obnoxious fairly quickly. I also think that the unique mount might be annoying if Davis can soak allied projectiles, and it still might serve as too powerful an escape. The Unstoppable is a key component that might make it too powerful.

Thanks for the feedback :grinning:

I´m still considering updates to the talent tree.

Finally, I think that most of Tier 5’s supportive push feels a bit odd within the design.

I intended it as part of her adaptability. MULE is there mainly to repair Davis herself (to conserve Spare parts) and to represent the trait of terran mech armies from SC. SUPPLY is meant as a sustain tool in situations where your team is lacking those.

Namely, the giant area effect of Cover Fire and most specifically the targeted 1.25 second stun on Multi-Lock Weapons System

I added turn rate to Cover fire to help in that regard.
While stuns in general are kinda oppressive the 1.25 second is not that strong compared to Uther´s E or Varian´s Taunt especially with much longer cooldown.

if Davis can soak allied projectiles

I was probably bit misleading here. She will only get hit by projectiles intended to hit allies like Ana´s Q. I wanted to say that she is still hittable but ignores collisions.

and it still might serve as too powerful an escape. The Unstoppable is a key component that might make it too powerful.

I increased the cast time and added cooldown. And to be honest I find it weird to get rooted in the air. The fact that she can be hit without ability to return fire (unless talented) is enough to prevent abusing IMO.

Creativity - 5/5

This is a very creative take on Davis within the Balius. The abilities, trait, and talents all feel mostly creative and interesting. The trait especially is a very creative implementation of the idea present within Davis’ coop mission within SCII.

Cohesiveness - 4/5

While the character’s base kit all feels like it meshes together fairly well, though could still use some work, the talent tree falls a little too flat, in my opinion. I think there could be some work done across talents to promote a bit more cohesion, as well as some amount within Davis’ base kit.

Thematic - 5/5

This kit feels very thematic to not only the Balius and Terrans, but also works quite well inside of the Contest’s bounds, with the skill-based talent tree, alterable talents, etc.

Interaction - 4/5

A couple of Davis’ effects could still use some updating, as there are a couple of things here that could be frustrating. First, Covering Fire’s Crossfire effect, as it stands, has 0 limit, and could potentially last indefinitely, which is some ridiculous potential for slows. On top of that, a 35CD point and click 1.25 second stun still feels a little long, and could use some work. I may be overlooking a specific talent or two, but otherwise, the kit seems to be in a good place.

Well, the description was probably bit missleading here. The Crossfire effect marks the enemy for the duration of original slow then if they are hit by Davis (but not the same cast of Cover fire) or her allies (with talent) they will take 8 damage and be slowed by the same amount as they were by the Cover fire. So even when the enemy has multiple Crossfire marks (with talent) they will take damage and get slowed multiple times but only until the marks are gone.
I hope this explains that and I will improve the description there.

On top of that, a 35CD point and click 1.25 second stun still feels a little long, and could use some work.

It is a short stun on long cooldown. Yes it is a point and click but it can still be countered by unstoppable and cleanse.
