This isn’t the same Blizzard a lot of us grew up with really. Most of the old guard are no longer with the company. It is mostly a bunch of different people hired by Activision.
Honestly I hated it when Dustin Browder got moved off of HotS.
So? What are those regions gonna do? Block the sites? I would love to see that happen. It would be hilarious to see the meltdown thrown when the average Joe can’t sh*tpost on twitter/facebook.
you’re saying it like blizzard doesn’t even need to uphold any moral standards, if murder got made legal for no reason and you go around murdering people it doesn’t make you a better person or you’re murdering ok, even if there wasn’t a law that would prevent censorship on a private forum it doesn’t make them going around to censor posts any more morally acceptable or fair to an unfairly censored poster, heroes of the storm could be made so that every character can only autoattack and can’t move spawn and it’s their game so they have the right to make it like that but that doesn’t mean the game wouldn’t be stupid + broken
blizzard is a triple A game company and should be above things like censorship, of course they don’t have to allow absolute freedom of speech on their forums, but in what sense would that be a good thing if they didn’t?
Speaking purely as someone who was involved in one of the previous threads, I have to point out that each thread does two things:
The first is that it discusses the moderators and their decisions on the forums, specifically what they edit, delete, and who they choose to ban. This is against the rules of the forum. While there could be an argument about how this could be used to eliminate naysayers, the truth is that this is an area for general discussion about Heroes of the Storm… What we think of characters, what we hope to see, our opinions on the meta, and so on. So, in a sense, we’re off topic from the get-go.
The second thing is another problematic thing. We’re talking censorship, there’s mentions of personal rights, what freedoms we do and don’t allow in the private sector, and whether they are justified or moral. All of this just BARELY stays out of the realm of politics… and I, for one, am happy the mods work to keep THAT sort of discussion OUT of the forums. If I wanna talk stuff like that, I’m gonna go find a sub-reddit somewhere, I came here to talk HotS… leave the first-amendment-rights out of this.
So really. It’s easy to accuse Blizzard mods of doing one thing or another, but they are just keeping the discussions where they need to be, stopping flame-war-threads from burning down the forums in epic viral-social-media fashion. And if you scroll through the threads, you will see MORE than enough naysaying posts ripping Blizzard a new one for this or that… meaning you are allowed to say what you want, as long as it’s civil, as long as it’s not spamming, and as long as it directly ties back to HotS when you’re in the General Discussion area of the HotS forums.
webblocking has been a thing for years – the self proclaim ‘best page in the universe’ would brag about the countries and services that would ban that site.
However, recent news has examples of countries, like Myanmar, where a lack of ‘censorship’ or enforcement of terms of service has actually fostered the increase in hostilities through obscene, lewd, defamatory posts.
Is the best page in the universe a site that the average Joe uses to communicate with their family? I don’t think Maddox can claim that kind of popularity. He might try though.
Secondly I wasn’t denying the capability. I was denying the will.
Edit: Edited out the second part. This is already too much politics on a dumb videogame forum.
You’re correct, companies are people too now of course, it’s their forums, their own rules, they can adjust their rules to justify any punishment. As you say, they also don’t have to justify a punishment or a ban, they can do what they like.
The problem with this approach is the pesky customer still exists. Many people who play HOTS also have paid for other titles like WC, Overwatch and Diablo etc., so “this is free to play” argument I’m going to dismiss out of hand.
If they want to foster in their games and forums a sense of fear and uncertainty regarding rules and policies and the arbitrary manner in which than can be applied, I don’t feel this will create happy customers in the long run.
We no longer live in a world were business practices such as these don’t become known to the wider public. Stifle healthy discourse by punishing people unfairly just because you can, not because it breaks the rules, may give the false appearance everyone is happy with your product, but people now have the means to communicate their dissatisfaction elsewhere where it can be heard by a very large audience.
Long term I don’t think it’s healthy for any game, forum or company to continue with these policies if you want customer retention or if you want useful feedback regarding your product.
Incorrect. In England they literally have the nanny police for everyone who gets triggered by some bad language. Cause you know cops shouldn’t be stopping violent crimes or anything. Someone said a joke that upsets you? Call the police!
So don’t talk down to Americans when other countries get triggered and their standard protocol is to call the police.
