Zeddy (and Regis) make some good points

It made a fun gameplay loop. And unlocking the cards was satisfying for me

I had a god draw during witchwood then lost it due to a disconnect and never got it again.

During dungeon run, I had over a hundred runs with priest and decided I don’t have a one in a hundred chance of ever beating it so I gave up

Dalaaran was alright.

The books are atrocious. Having to sit there and concede until I get the exact draw and play those exact cards in the exact order over a thousand times (or however many of those absurd books there are) is not my idea of a good time.

I beat Frozen Throne once for the pack. The handicaps were too terrible for me to even bother.

“Frozen Throne reminds me of Heroic bosses from the old adventures!”

I never played Heroic bosses so I am clearly not the target audience. I didn’t even bother installing solo adventures this time around because why?

It isn’t fun.
I have less than one in a hundred chances to ever win. And I have tried to beat the walls of theramore in the mage book but I never get the right cards like the YT videos say you need to win while my brain is computing like ten other decks that could easily beat this nonsense…

Constructed is tilting enough. And I have gotten better at handling it but why borrow trouble, you know?

Uh…those are TERRIBLE numbers for a live service game. If you are an investor you have some SERIOUS questions about only making 150 million in microtransaction money. Diablo immortal did 4x that in 11 months. They always knew they would make a pile on initial sales. Monetarily they are only slightly ahead of what D3 was at. If you adjust for inflation and prices it’s actually doing worse. It’s not even in the top 15 live service games. PoE is MORE profitable in that department.

150m micro nonsense on a game that charges full price and more on release, a game that should have 0 predatory gacha bs.

And you thing they are unhappy…
New expansion is coming and they charge for those as well POE is 100% free you pay what you want.

Cant compare the 2.

Live service games are PRIMARILY created to pull in big numbers on microtransactions. Money from other sources like expansions or the base game are something they always know will bring in big numbers.

PoE absolutely is in this equation because they ARE a FTP Live Service game with just microtransactions and they are destroying that pitiful 150 million Blizzard brought in. I can guarantee you Blizzard didn’t turn D4 into a Live Service game in order for it’s main revenue to be from base game and expansions. They were expecting BIG numbers from microtransactions.

What fascinates me about this is that every time I see a debate about this type of thing play out, people are always trying to do that thing where someone’s like “my life sucks because X” and then some other guy goes “oh yea? MY life’s worse because Y” and then you have a third one going “well I’M dealing with X plus Y” etc.

It’s a race to the bottom and the prize is being labeled saddest sack.

Here with D4, it’s like the choices as presented are either Blizz having intentionally made anti-consumer/anti-gamer choices to make a quick buck, or else accidentally making those choices. I don’t find either scenario particularly engaging. But the spectacle of seeing people race to “figure out” which is worse, is at least bemusing.

If nothing else, they’re farming engagement metrics something fierce from this contest.

In my opinion the game is too fast. That’s why I like nerfs more than buffs.

The miniset is OK, it’s just that there are too many broken cards, combo’s… That can kill you early on.

Another problem to me is that sometimes it feels like it’s okay to waist mana if you have some left. You can just draw, discover more cards without any worries or payment. Some decks seem to have a full hand every turn.

With all respect.
Hearthstone isn’t anti consumer at all.

The prices are high but the advantage gained is abismally low while the cosmetics are better at a higher price so you not run into people using the same as you every single match.
That because cosmetics are about customization and that is about trying to make your account feel more unique.

My comment was responding to the last several posts which were referencing D4 and/or the Diablo franchise in general.

Regarding Hearthstone specifically, I would argue CCG’s are literally lootboxed pay-to-win by design. Your “power” literally comes from cards. Core cards, which are free, can only do so much. The ones you REALLY want are the shiny new ones with the power creep, and while you CAN get those “for free,” the cost is paid in Time, which is often absurdly overpriced. How many people “free-to-play” their way into even 2K gold for the mini set within a single month’s time? During which they must forgo spending that money on packs, while grinding a “free tier” battle pass with far fewer rewards?

RMT drastically shortens the Time, which people tend to value more than money more often than not. That’s literally why we work for a living - so that we don’t have to divide our time to even learn how to build a house, set the plumbing, etc. We can just BUY the house and HIRE the plumber.

It becomes an economy of scale VERY rapidly. Spend a hundred bucks, enjoy my entire weekend with my deck of choice that nets me easier wins which snowballs into more time played with more wins and more rewards. Compared to spending a hundred hours with pauper decks that gives me harder wins and spirals into more time sunk with more losses and fewer rewards.

All of that to say, CCG’s are P2W. Literally by design. I don’t see that as problematic, as long as the reality is broadcast for the potential player to understand prior to them investing in it. Caveat Emptor, after all.
