What is the difference between Location/Objective?

Rare · Location · Murder at Castle Nathria · Transform a friendly minion into one that costs (1) more.

Rare · Location · Murder at Castle Nathria · Deal 1 damage to a minion and give it +1 Attack.

Rare · Spell · Fractured in Alterac Valley · At the end of your turn, destroy your lowest Attack minion to summon a 4/4 Shade. Lasts 3 turns.

Rare · Spell · Fractured in Alterac Valley · At the end of your turn, draw a Secret and set its Cost to (1). Lasts 3 turns.

What is the difference between these?
In my opinion, both all of them are Locations.
So why different cardtypes? :frowning:

Blizzard said, they’ll add Locations in future expansions, so we’ll see that cardtype again, but what about Alterac Objectives? Are they dying like Joust in the Tournament or Unidentified cards in Kobolds & Catacombs?

Objectives were stated to be an earlier iteration of the design for Location cards. Basically, Locations are what they ultimately wanted after testing out Objectives. Objectives were still considered to be Spells, but Locations are a new card type (so now we have the 5 card types of Minions, Spells, Weapons, Heroes, and Locations).

The way I understood it is that Locations can be activated (you don’t automatically deal one damage to a random minion to give it +1 attack, for instance), while Objectives are always active.

an end of turn effect and always trigger until it wears off

  1. takes up a minion slot
  2. you can choose when to use it
  3. it has 1 turn cool down after been used

Objectives are also Spells, so they can be Counterspelled, Oh My Yogg!'d, or Blademaster Okani’d.

Despite taking up a board slot, Locations are not minions and (currently) cannot be removed or countered by your opponent. (If Locations stick around a while, i expect that will not always remain the case.)

Side note: is it just me, or do the Juggernaut and Nether Portal feel like other Location iterative designs? Both are indestructible and occupy a board slot. Hmmm. Wonder if there are others I’m not thinking of.

This objective would not work as a Location:
Rare · Spell · Fractured in Alterac Valley · After you summon a minion, give it +2/+2. Lasts 3 turns.

Also, Locations have a 1-turn cooldown, if you use a Location you can’t use it next turn (watch the Mechanics Showcase for Locations to see how it looks and works). The 10 objectives all last exactly 3 turns and don’t go on cooldown for a turn when triggered.

wouldnt surprise me to find out the objetives were thought as locations first then reworked later

They did say objectives were an earlier iteration on the design already, so, yes.
