What business does he have designing Hearthstone if he doesn’t want to play it in his free time?
Is it nepotism?

He is only de lead of this set, aside from that he’s a senior designer afaik.
And are you suggesting designers should spend all their spare time playing hearthstone? Designing Hearthstone is their job, I only care they are good at it.
If it’s just their 9 to 5 job, it explains why they’re bad at it.
The best games are passion projects.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if that’s what you want, you gotta check out of Triple-A games in general man
I just wish he would take a hint from the game he enjoys so much…
Marvel Rivals should be a huge wake up call and yet Jaina remains nerfed…
Give people what they want and they play your game in droves like Rivals???
Nah let me just score some more virtue signal points yikes, we are so screwed in the west.
gotta keep that quoata, even if Gonzo can’t handle basic design for one set alone
Of course he plays other games. Why wouldnt he? You think all designers only play the game they work on? I think anyone would go insane working all day on a game and spending all your free time playing the same game.
Besides it could be good to get fresh ideas or be inspired. That said, the game needs some fresh ideas.
Work =/= Hobbies
Also he has nothing to do with balance and can hate the meta all he wants.
Also, seek help for your parasocial relations, my dude
There is nothing wrong with checking in on what your competitors do.
He was bragging he pushed for 3 minions to be 7 mana 7/7 because it would be “so cool”. That has a lot to do with balance.
Blizzard is a very Arts-oriented company which explains they constantly do dumb things on software engineering.
It’s part of the reason I don’t believe they micromanage how you will lose (they don’t have the skill to do it).
The most “rigging” those people could do is to raise your MMR so you lose easier by better players.
7 mana 7/7 ? you liteerally complain about anything just to complain…
Blizzard also printed a card like triple 7 that is pretty unplayable. They have printed alot of tongue in cheek humor kind of cards. Not every card has to be amazing. Or even playable.
I think I remember that card seeing a lot of play in some cycle decks
Even in the Arena, it’s just such an insane value when you’re left with 3-4 cards, that it more than compensates for the damage of burning a card or two when you have more
I don’t see anything particularly problematic with fixing a statline for flavor.
By far the most concerning statement he made in regards to design insights in this set was, I quote:
‘Uluu the Everdrifter is the 2nd card of the set that wouldn’t exist were it not for my stubbornness. The idea of a Choose One card that randomly changes its options every turn sounds fun as hell to me, so I did my best to make sure it exists :)’
Honestly I’d rather they wouldn’t openly share these kind of insights to the community, because statements like this one about a legendary that is so obviously trash, unplayable and pointless such as:
Really highlights a big problem of misaligned initial design with final design objectives. Function > Form. Boasting about the fact this card wouldn’t exist were not for your stubbornness is honestly a terrible look.
Anyways I don’t have any problems with the guy or what he plays in his spare time (I think OP’s point is really childish), but I’d recommend more caution when sharing designs insights to an already frustrated playerbase.
Alot of play would be a bit much but it appeared with the scam pirate but was largely unplayable because it milled so much and cost too much.
But yeah its an ok arena card. Not that rogue is very good there either but its serviceable as a hail mary
That card would probably actually work if it just activated both Choose One effects at once, or costed less. The design itself isn’t that flawed, just needed a couple of minor tweaks to make it playable.
You are often an intelligent poster but your hate for most other posters doesn’t let you think straight.
The topic was whether that person is affecting balance.
He does if he fixated on 3X7/7/7 no matter what.
I agree, but he was openly admitting that he insisted on that design and that it was printed the way it is because he was stubborn about it. And the card is very obviously garbage as is. It’s not cheaper, it doesn’t trigger both effects… it even needs a turn to activate in hand. So saying something like that about a card this bad to an audience that is already very skeptical about this team’s competence is… a bad look, to put it lightly.
That was the point. 3X7/7/7 was only one example. I was responding to someone saying that person does not affect balance at all.
He does, because he gets stubborn about specific designs and then enforces them.
The topic was balance. In the best case scenario it lowers the pool of playable cards that are interesting.
In the worst case scenario the random cards that are “funny” are OP on top.
I think there’s room in the game for some joke cards that mostly just exist for silly, non-serious games (Noggenfogger, the Rager line), but Uluu isn’t silly enough for me. And in standard play, a card that isn’t good enough to see play is virtually indistinguishable from a card that doesn’t exist. Uluu is a waste of a valuable Legendary slot.
