So, the past week I had gotten the itch to play Hearthstone after a several year hiatus. In fact, you could consider me a new player with how little I remembered the game. I reinstalled it, played a couple dozen games, and all I can say is: what the hell?
I played the standard multiplayer experience, picking a deck and going for it. I remember it being a fun challenge, a fair battle between cards that were nice, simple and easy to understand. Emphasis on “simple”. Good ol’ “Taunt” and “Stealth” and all that jazz. Fun. Balanced.
Instead, what met me was endless combo turns, units summoning units summoning units which makes people draw cards which then buffs everything into the ceiling which then freezes my units which then triggers one of the 5 stacked secrets which deletes my most powerful unit. Then, next turn, they summon a “colossal”(?) unit with three parts that all have over 5 damage and the one with 10 health has taunt, then play a card that summons a whole board-full of units. There are all these cards with all these abilities that make no sense to me, and me with my peasant OG deck stands no chance against them.
Now, this might open the floodgates of “Do your research” or “just copy a meta deck” or “just git gud”. And granted, being away for so long has made me rusty. And it’s not like I’m a god at card games or deck building or whatever. But, the thing is, I shouldn’t have to look up an encyclopedia of unit abilities to understand what they all do. I can’t even USE a meta deck if I wanted to because I DON’T HAVE THE CARDS THEY ALL USE, and I’m NOT about to spend real money on this game. There’s no way for me to match the people I’m playing with in multiplayer card-wise, locked off by a paywall I have no interest in scaling.
Out of all the games I’ve played, there was a set pattern. It would be pretty balanced the first few turns, but the second they are able to spam all these spells and units and secrets, it’s game over for me. It’s honestly really disappointing, because I did genuinely want to get back into this game. But I had come for a nice, chill, casual experience, not an endless cycle of pain against cards I can’t even counter and will never get my hands on unless I fork over my credit card information.
Guess I’ll just stick with Slay the Spire after all.
