Invalidating someone is one of the quickest and most guaranteed ways to piss them off. People can like what they like, prefer what they prefer.
Other games have emote toggles so clearly it’s not ruining society nor does it seem to be putting us on a path toward said ruin. Even if I find the desire for it to be silly or unwarranted, the facts are that it exists and does so harmlessly.
I’m just going to say Blizzard absolutely does not have to appease anyone’s requests. That’s all it is, a request. I’m mostly commenting on how opposing parties to this matter are calling people who want squelch for BG names such as mentally unstable or that it’s censorship. This is, after all, a card game. Not a chat website. I haven’t even played BG, so IDK what the emotes are, but the need to say these pre-written one liners is not very necessary. What good progress for humanity is being harmed by individual persons filtering emotes out from their personal experience, emotes such as Hello. Some fantasy type threat. Some Astounding! expression. I’m sorry for your loss if people have this option
Question: Can you ask the Casino to turn of the flashy lights and loud sounds of the machine while you play?
Seriously? Can you? Would they? Should they? I don’t know. But doesn’t this equate to the same request?
It’s not the feature I fear. It’s the precedent that it sets and the expectations that follow. “I don’t like it, take it away from my sight this moment”.
I 100% understand wanting to reduce the frustrations felt on a hard series of games, I do. But as Robin Hood said “Nice shot, but can you do it amid distraction?”.
This right here. The more our society bows the knee to this sort of mentality, the more we all undermine our own strength. Sure this is just a video game, but let’s not pretend it’s the ONLY thing affected by this sentiment.
Nobody thinks the lights on a casino machine are sending a hidden message. Playing a player is definitely different. The frequency and timing of a message sent by emote from a player who isn’t a bot, matters.
No, but they’re designed specifically to stimulate your brain and keep you enganged and spending money, which isn’t any less malicious than some rando on the web being snarky.
I get that. But it’s a distraction. Another level perhaps but it’s just a distraction that improves your skill if you learn to ignore it. It’s the #1 reason I love playing internet poker players at the casino. They can’t handle real life.
At the poker table we distract all the time. Different types of banter, fancy totems to talk about, one guy purposely sat down smelling of weed so bad it was all anyone at the table could talk about… I took $500 from the table in an hour or so and left. My wife made us drive with the windows open on the way home.
I live in Canada. I was allowed to do it. Okay, it wasn’t on purpose but I damn well took advantage of the situation. No one paid attention to the game at all. The worst they could ask is for me to try and manage the smell. I had axe body spray in my pocket, which would have renewed the table discussions I’m sure.
Point being. Those that could handle it didn’t feed me money. Those that couldn’t did.
This idea I understand. That it’s part of the game mechanics for this card game. Mind games, if you will. In standard you can squelch, so I guess you can’t rely on it fully. In BGs I understand there is no squelch, so I guess for BGs it is part of the mechanics.
The thing is, Hearthstone already doesn’t have voice chat or text chat, sound emotes in regular game mode you can already block as people asked for it, but now they need auto-squelch because if they forget to use it and someone emote them it is so triggering that they can’t stand it and barely visible with no sound BG emotes with intent that you can only guess behind them are so awful that they would like to report players using them so that those “evil people” can be punished. Do you not see how playing into someones delusions is not helping long term? People that are believing that everyone is having bad intentions towards them and that everything they disagree with is toxic will never be satisfied until they resolve those things internally. Giving them more ground will only reinforce that mindset. If you are feeling bad about those things you really need to step back and I mean it with no ill will. I buried my father 3 weeks ago and it drained me mentally so I kept myself away from social networks and competitive games for more than two weeks as I am not the prime example of mental health either and things do get to me from time to time, but I also don’t think that everything should be changed to fit my mental state at all times.
They are the same request. And if the casinos did add that feature guess what? They would get more business because the ppl that get turned off by the flashy lights and sounds would could now play with 0 effect on anyone else. Sure its not a ton of people but I bet it would more than pay for the cost of a simple silence button in the programming of the machine.
Everyone literally wins if they added squelch in BGs and some of you guys are against it for god knows what reason. That is the truely sad part.
The request to add squelch in the client for BG only effects the person who chooses to use it. It has 0 effect on everyone else. That we even need to debate whether this should be added or not is the real question. Of coarse it should. Quality of life changes help a game overtime. The real question is why do you want ppl not to be happy?
Go ahead and play a game with brainless bots and a kitten then. If you think some cartoon emotes hurts you, you are better at the psychiatric ward in the hospital.
Actually it’s the opposite. That’s why they have them.
I don’t agree. I’ve stated why many times. I would rather lose the people that get annoyed by it. Might make the game world a fun place to be for people looking to have fun together vs alone.
Exact opposite. I like fun things in the game, period. Fun things make people happy. Unhappy people make fun things unfun and thus happy people unhappy. It’s a personal issue, not a community issue. NO AUTO SQUELCH!
You still don’t get it. I paid for happy, cutie cartoon emotes to say hello! Not to annoy people. If your kid is getting raged at a cartoon character on a book, you shouldn’t tell all book companies to stop printing visuals because it would only make the majority, which are the ones who likes it getting mad and stop buying. Do the lesser evil and let those players use third party blockers instead, because if it is a bug enough issue, they should already have enough anger and rage to get a blocker, in this case they don’t.
cool and you can still do emotes even if people squelch. ideally you would not even know you were squelched.
i dont think books can BM people…
and no one is saying to remove emotes from the game. if your child finds a book upsetting you can throw the book away with out destroying every copy on the planet., and other parents can buy the book for their kids. are you saying parent should FORCE kids to read upsetting books.?
or blizzard could finish their own games instead of relying on addons.
