What did I miss?

That song is a great choice, and I actually included it in my first post in this threadi:
Here is another song from that time period that’s on my Goth playlist:
Goth is something I can remark on:)
Figuring out where it came from is always a fascinating debate for me.

Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead represents very early Goth, since it was recorded in 1979. I actually do not keep the original version on my Goth playlist, since it’s so long (over 9 minutes). I instead opt for this shortened cover of it by The 69 Cats:
Great choice. I have been in so many discussions where groups like these aren’t even considered, as though Goth started with the Misfits or something, lol.
For me, it was this band that made the word mean something:
I think they are responsible for the word itself used to describe the music.

I hesitated to link a Siouxsie and the Banshees’ song, because I probably already have done so in this thread, but I feel too lazy to check right now.
Oh well, you get a pass. The one I posted isn’t even from their goth days but later.
Siouxsie rolled with the changes for a bit.
Next question: When did goth morph to Emo?
This band would be my choice:
Certainly, the lines between Goth and Emo blur a bit, but I tend to view early Goth music as being heavily reliant on Alternative, New Wave, Post Punk, and even some Synthpop, while early Emo mostly arises from Punk.
This article has a good summarization of the “Evolution of Emo:”

There’s an overlap in fashion styles between Goth and Emo as well, but Emo tends to embrace more of a Punk look. Imagine the movie character Lizbeth Salander as played by Noomi Rapace, whose look is often described as Goth, but it’s really more of a Punk/Emo look.

I started a short playlist of Emo a few weeks ago, and I tend to gravitate to the best songs of more modern Emo groups like My Chemical Romance and New Found Glory:
I am a die hard Gerard Way fan:

I find a fair amount of diversity in Goth music, and I am happy to share some more examples from my playlists:
Goth that’s also Synthpop:
