It’s like 2 types of costs in a company:

a) fixed cost, which you pay no matter how much you work,
b) variable cost, which vary depending on the amount of something produced.

Same way, the 1 mana you always gain is a “fixed mana gain”, and the other 3 are variable mana gains which depend on the number of turns you survive and it can vary between 0 and 3 additional mana gain.

In probability theory and decision making, you calculate the odds of gaining each amount, pick the highest of those amounts and that’s the decision you’re going to make.

In this case, you should open up your tracker and see:

a) how many average turns per win,
b) how many average turns per loss,
c) average winrate.

Knowing those 3, you can assign probabilities to each of the possible additional mana gains (0-3) and the average of all those is the average amount of additional mana you will gain.

Since you will not survive 100% of the games until the turn you would get your last mana, even in casual, you can throw that “1+3” out the window.
