My First Time Reaching Diamond!

Hi Everyone! As the title suggests, I just hit Diamond for the first time!!! It’s an awesome feeling, especially since I came close to quitting due to a real awful run of bad luck in the Gold 5 bracket, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts on this month’s journey to a new personal best:

I used a Tier 3 deck style (zoo) because I’m pursuing the 500 win warlock picture. I’m glad that you don’t have to play a top tier deck to succeed.

I actually think that after the latest round of DH nerfs the meta is decently healthy, not the best for sure but also not nearly as bad as it has been in the past. While the season started out as a DH bonanza I’ve played against a wide variety of classes in the past week or so.

I cannot emphasize how important it is to not get tilted. I was able to (mostly) accomplish this by setting a cutoff of 3 losses in a row, where no matter what I stopped for the night. There were play sessions where my luck was absolutely horrendous and I nearly uninstalled the game early in the month because I was getting so mad. Since I imposed that 3 loss cutoff on myself, my playing experience has been far more enjoyable and successful.

My most memorable matches were when I didn’t get optimal draws and had to get creative to pull out the win. It required me to know my deck very well and to also play around/disrupt what my opponent was trying to do. My ability to do this is probably the biggest difference between me at the beginning of the month and me at the end.

RNG is fun but too much is a bad thing. If I had one suggestion for the developers, it’s to tone down the current RNG nature of Hearthstone. It’s exciting to draw the perfect card or to get a lucky discover, but only in moderation. The game has gone so overboard that there are very powerful decks built purely around RNG mechanics, which becomes incredibly frustrating to play against.

Anywho, I don’t know how much further I’ll go this month but I’m looking forward to getting back to diamond in June and pushing for Diamond 5. Maybe with the new rank system I might even take on the challenge of the final grind to legend.
