Sad, although not unexpected. Looks like anything more or less decent or interesting, if you ask me, is gonna be hidden under the ‘Modes’ submenu? 
The first sentence in the description literally says
The mode still exists within the Hearthstone client though, you just need to go to the Modes menu to find it.
Not really a big deal. Menu buttons get shifted around. Nothing special.

Yeah, except that what is the main menu going to contain? Traditional HS, where they are killing arguably the only worthy way of playing nowadays, Battlegrounds, which they have made strictly P2W, and Tavern Brawl, which is… well?
Oh, yeah, yet another one of those with an irresistible urge to inform everyone how they are clueless and have got nothing meaningful to say. Isn’t this forum dull…
In my opinion it’s something that’s purely cosmetical, also probably based on mode population. So it’s kinda whatever.
I don’t think Mercenaries were ever that popular…
This looks more like a message: it used to be something they promoted, and now — yet another sign that they have abandoned the mode.
