Just played a mage who did the following:
- early turn). sphere of sapience,
- turn>= 7). Lorekeeper polklt
- next turn). Tortilian pilgrim > potion of illusion
- next turn). mozaki master duelist , + tortilian pilgrim > potion of illusion (repeated), 1x tortilian pilgrim > frostnova/blizzard
now the only other spells in the deck appeared to be frost nova, and a blizzard. I think they used only 1 of each to guarantee on the first pilgrim to hit the potion of illusion. After that my opponent waited to draw solarian prime. and started duplicating it. it became impossible to beat. I was locked out the game just by the pilgrim, potion of illlusion in deck and frost nova /blizzard in deck
i wasnt exactly low health. drawing multiple kathgar primes. but I got worn down eventually.
I am use to some decks like this in wild or previous standard rotations where you risk not drawing right or being unable to pull off a setup kill or OHK. Though i do think this pairing of pilgrim and potion of illusion is going to be strong even without the other cards to assist.
what do people here think? maybe I’m just a bit sore from being whooped, but is potentially this duplication too effective/powerful compared to similar play styles from other standard seasons?

Too powerful hasn’t been my experience with the new mage cards.
They seem like crap to me.
I find it funny that most of this conspiracy theories against Mage come from people with little to no posts.
Happy coincidence!
If you think about it, for the deck to work you need to draw and play Sphere of Sapience and Polkelt before you draw both potions of illusion, otherwise you’d only get two copies. When it works, it works great, but when it doesn’t, not so much.
I mean, it’s not uncommon for people’s first foray into the forums to be motivated by a deck they don’t understand/feel is overpowered. Mage isn’t particularly special in this regard.

Some of them are pretty strong. None of them unreasonably so.
I avoided the full spell damage package like the plague, but slotted in a whole bunch of the new individual cards into highlander mage and got legend this month pretty easily with it.
They have some solid new things, just none of it is particularly flashy, unlike some of the other new things floating around.
Lol its the best deck atm ahahha.
All streamers are playing it. Just watch rdu how he destroys everyone.
Its clearly broken

They don’t need pot of illusion to otk you, though. Just double apprentice and mozaki is enough.
They don’t need this Pot of illusion to win the game. They can do so much more effectively with just moza+double SA. So I’m answering the topic , for me, its balanced since there is way better options for mages.
Potting the apprentices are just insurance. You don’t need it
being capable of otk does not make it broken, or even good.
Hey…BoarTK WAS A HUNTER TIER 1 UNDER THE RADAR BEST OTK DECK TH…no it was crap…
i would bet that when VS report comes out this deck isn’t even tier two.
Think it’s at the very bottom of T2 right now.

you must be talking about hrthpwn, right?
No I think it was Regis that showed an early tier list and otk was at the bottom of 2…

Ok… looking at how that deck works.
It literally can’t beat any rogue deck with flick, as they’ll just destroy all of the tortollan pilgrims.
Ooze prevents it from fixing their draws, and if they draw both potions of illusion they pretty much lose.
Freeze protection allows for decks to bypass the main stall mechanic. There are faster burn decks than that.
It’s certainly an absurd interaction though.

As far as I know VS hasn’t released a data reaper for this expansion.
this deck is meme at best. Players haven’t adjusted their strategies for it is all.

Spam the board forcing mage to burn all their cards on removal or stalling. They have nothing left for spell damage generating.
Tada!
