MAGE - near endless Potion of illusion, Balanced or exploit?

Streamers will always tell you the deck they’re playing is amazing…that’s how they get viewers.

You don’t get viewers by saying “This is not really a good deck.”.

You get viewers by saying “OMFG, 10 WINS, 0 LOSSES, THIS DECK IS AMAZING!”

I’ve seen streamers drop in rank before the stream, compared to their last stream, just to get a good winning streak to hype people up about their stream and deck.

Streamers know what they’re doing. They’re presenting something that people latch onto.

There are always combo decks, and you lose to them it seems super unfair, because you just watched someone play hearthstone solitaire. But on the other side of these screen that may have been one of only a few times it actually worked out. That’s the way out was with a lot of mage freeze decks. Making it to turn 3 isn’t a sure thing anymore, and with only 1 fn, and 1 blizzard, your trade game better be funomunal to hit turn 8.

Who is he playing against? what rank, etc? Probably has a great deal to do with what you see.

He was playing in Legend ranks(where no one cares about lossing) so he was getting pair up to realy slow control decks that people like to play around go figure when they dont drop rank.

Sounds to me like he was getting really favorable matchups. I have watched this same deck get destroyed by faster classes.
Once players learn to defend against it this deck won’t be owning anything.
It’s just early and players haven’t got their strategies fully baked yet.

That video didn’t prove to me it was broken, it more proved to me that high ranked players aren’t necessarily as good as I had previously thought.

  1. He missed lethal on the combo which seemed very apparent to me that he had it
  2. He specifically said he can’t make decks like that and he sucks at making decks
  3. You can’t even do the combo if you draw the potions

It’s just another type of meme deck since it’s not nearly consistent enough

My favorite part of this post (before I even read the rest).

It seems like a meme to me,having to run 25 minions many of which are not all that great, having very little card draw. It looks kinda fun though and better against agro then the mozaki deck for sure.

Its so slow, you need lots of turns even when you hit the combo, though when you finally get there there isnt all that much the opponent can do it seems other then try burst you down.
I think it should lose the mirror against the mozaki deck but noone seems to play the hard combi mozaki deck anymore.

I saw boar playing an interesting mage deck as well today,it has mozaki but it doesnt seem to go all in on the combo. Also runs mana giants,he was rank 50-ish for several games with that deck so it has some potential.

Regis specifically said on stream that it was not a good deck, that it was clearly a meme deck, and he was having trouble getting enough winning matches to make a video showcasing it. Yes, it’s absurd; no, it’s not consistent; and, no, he’s not trying to hype it as something that it isn’t.

Flikk or Glide or Bombs or Illucia would also clearly ruin it as it relies on Polkelt.

I’ve seen builds that just use the Potion with the 8 mana Tortollan to continuously cycle Blizzards and Potions onto itself and Nightblade. Add Sphere of Sapience as insurance, and it locks the game completely if it gets 10 mana.

Encountered this mage deck first time yesterday with mage generating multiple copies of prime etc and it did seem a bit bonkers. At one point as well they deliberately engineered at least 4 owls on the board at once which seemed strange to me and made me question whether I was actually in standard or wild mode.

Did eventually win the game with my blistering rot paladin deck though more by good luck than good judgement (had a random conjurers calling spell from one of the primes cast on my own minions).

It’s a meme-ish deck that’s capable of winning games. Doesn’t mean it’s broken, in 1 or 2 weeks time probably no one will play it anymore. I’ve made a warlock deck where I play the dark portal on 4 into 5 mana jepetto into 1 mana maly and 1 mana alex that can otk on turn 6 or 7. Did anyone play this deck nor is it good? No.

Bombs also ruin it because sometimes the pilgrim will offer you a bomb instead of the potion of illusion.

Just played against one. They were copying and playing Khartut Defenders. I did a late game Flik on their Pilgrim and shuffled 13 Fliks into my deck. They conceded next turn.

the deck is kind of a meme to be honest, if you draw the cards you need to be in your deck you can just concede

This was the deck I just played. He had four health and I had full health… then he played the tortollan 17 times over the following turns and I never got to attack again. His hand was full of free blizzard, 1 cost copies of 8 cost minions, and 1 cost face damage nightblade.

In a different thread someone complained about freeze being broken, and even though freeze prevented play here for six or seven turns, I don’t agree freeze is the issue.

The idea that anyone can generate infinite loops of anything in this game is fundamentally broken, imo. Not that this deck is uber awesome, simply the existence of infinite generation of cards, anyone’s cards, is broken.
