Hello
I’d like to start a thread about the IA in duels. I play this mode a lot, and enjoy it but i still have a big problem with the IA and how he manage to “understand” the deck you create.
First of all i’ve totally aknowledge the fact that the game wo’nt give you perfect passive skills or perfect buckets each time. Blizzard tried it, it was unplayable (with fun at least) as everyone got the full package so everyone was playing the same stupid decks. But still, sometime things could be done in a better way.
I’ll go with one example that makes me really mad. I adapted existing decks to create this one:
AAEBAf0ED8sEl8EC+84DkuQD1OoD0uwD2OwDne4DwPkDk4EEoIoEoZIE5p8E8dMEqd4EAAA=
After 50 tries (probably even more) the game NEVER gave me the passive skill i’m dying for, arctic armor. He offers me skills like “damage your minions to give them attack” (great with a hero power that gives you plenty of 2/1…) but never arctic armor who is usefull, not only with your HP (the elmentals are freezing), but also with half of the deck.
I know it’s difficult to have a perfect IA, that reads correctly more “exotic” strategies. So i’ve began to think a way that could help.
According to me it should be done with a new early stage of choice where you’d pick 3 or 4 passive in the pool, and then the AI will randomly offers you at least one of them. That would not be too ridiculously powerful, as very often for each strategy you have 1 “perfect” choice, 1maybe 2 “good choice” and some “ok” choices. You will then have 1/3 or 1/4 for your perfect choice (which is not too much), but at least you’ll go with a “ok” choice. And the big advantage is that exotic strategies would have their chance.
I’ll add that some strategies really find their "perfect "passive very easily (pirates, divine shield, etc…) compared to others, and that it would equalize chances a little bit.
What do you think guyes? And blue guys?
I wouldn’t mind getting useless passives, and buckets, all the time, as long as I am queued against equally “unformtunate” players. However, I never do. My opponents somehow always have good to perfect passives and cards synergy, while I get what I actually want 1 in 20 or so runs.
I’m surprised there’s no more answer about this…seems like a constructive talk is less likely to be interesting for people than just yelling at the dev…
Horatio i agree with you, even if it seems difficult to set up…because it would require the AI to properly “rate” how good the obtained passive is for the deck. And my example just show how it can suck at doing this prelimary task…
You are presuming that the algorhytm gives you bad passives and buckets by mistake. It is intentional.
If I start with the same cards as my opponents, who get the desired passives, but I don’t, that means the algorhytm can discern what we are trying to do. But gives them the apprpriate passive, and doesn’t give it to me.
No, i assurme he does not understand all the time if what he give is good or not. Of course for some strategy it’s obvious (15 mech in a deck for example). But for some (my example; still trying, still never had it), he just don’t realize what the player wants!
So imagine a world where the AI fit good passives together and bad passives together, and that i’m playing this deck, i may end facing decks with perfect passives whereas i never had mine…
Ill take it a step further. Ive been FTP since the first year if hearthstone, and play every day. Ive noticed in the last couple of years my winrate and RNG luck have tanked across all game styles. The only exceptions are the rare weeks after i pay for something in game i have a spike in great RNG luck. Last purchase i made of 15$ i ran off 3 12 run duels and an 11 win heroic in one week.
If there’s a hidden bonus or not when you purchase something is really not the point here (and i made many 12 wins without dropping a penny, i really don’t feel like there’s a point).
I try to have a constructive thinking about the AI and how it generally responds to the players goals, and how to make it better when the player goals and susequent decks are more elaborate than “put 16 pirates/holy shield/agony/etc…”.
But i really feel like people are more willing to whine than being constructive…
Didn’t they change this AI after launch to no longer try to give you something you want, making the choices random outside of the group learning buckets?

Passive treasures are less deterministic

They are “less” deterministic, not completely random…honstely with the decks full pirate for example, you have a very good chance to get what you want.
