Good! You are actively making the community better by doing that. I feel the same, but I genuinely question if I should even preorder.
I don’t even want to do my dailies.

I only see rebellions, and marked hearts am I wrong?
Yeah, and a tool too.
Like you said competition is always good and I agree. In the last two years we have seen more of these card games come up and eventually one will stick.
It’s hard to make a game with gameplay to rival hearthstone AND mtg, but it’s easy enough to make one with a better economy and force blizzards hand.
I’m personally very disappointed that gold packs do not follow the First 10 pack legendary rule, since there is absolutely zero outstanding reason why one would assume otherwise. Moves like that will have to go with more competition.
Thank you for the economic analysis.
I’ve converted fully to LoR and only pop by to see the state of hearthstone from time to time.
Lots of complaints, everyone should just give Legends of runeterra a chance.
Fun gameplay that has more counterplay and much better graphics. Custom boards with beautiful music as well
The last 2 years new potential contenders for competition came and went after failing, which is real sad 'cause we NEED Blizzard to feel the competition and finally step up the game.
Hearthstone is not a service, it’s an EXPERIENCE. If it’s not enjoyable or players feel like they are missing out when they look at other games…bad stuff.
LoR is very polished and for now has constant improvement, and Artifact is going to try again, maybe for good result this time.
(Meanwhile Magic went and shot itself in the foot yet again, but we don’t talk about that one no more).
Also also, if any ask why I still play? I want those ten 1000 win portraits leave me alone.
Hearthstone is getting their competition. LoR seems like the real deal. However, if MtG can not make their UI horrific on mobile Arena could soak up a lot of Hearthstone’s market as well.
For clarity: NOT saying Hearthstone is dying plenty of room. However, its very uncertain if Hearthstone will remain the king of digital CCG’s by 2021.
No, not really. Of course “when two quarrel, a third rejoices” is a thing, but generally speaking and overall it’s not all that great. It’s like more a necessary evil and certainly not some to praise in such way.
The typical example would be when you go into a store and want some advice on what product you need. Never will they ever say it’s something from this store over there. It will be of course some of their products so they can make a profit. So you can’t trust salespersons and I would say that’s not good.
Therefore competition is clearly not always good. It depends on how you look at it.
If I kill someone it can also be considered a “good thing” for various other reasons. But that doesn’t make killing humans always good.
Maybe I’m a bit too much hung up about that generic statement but it just sounds awful IMO.
I think so as well.
Where are cards like Yogg, Witch’s Cauldron, Marin, Saraad, Lackeys, etc.?
To be fair I saw once a champion (or what it’s called) that in her ultimate form (or what it’s called) that was like “whenever you play a spell, add a random spell to your hand”. That was pretty cool I thought. But it didn’t really looked that impressive to be honest. And of course until you get to that point it was really, really boring.
In Hearthstone on the other hand you can have fun starting on turn one. It depends a bit on the class but I even made it work for Warrior. A bunch of Discover cards, Witch’s Cauldron and Dr. Boom, Mad Genius for the late game and for the cool and awesome hero power.
With those “alternative games” I never even saw once an actual good “competitior” as you might call it. I’m in it for just casually having fun with crazy cool awesome RNG/Discover stuff. And for some reason no other game ever came even close. They are all so removed from what Hearthstone offers in terms of “fun” they stand no chance.
I agree with much that was said here, on both sides. I do still prefer Hearthstone, mainly for the randomness. It is why I loved playing Tess Burgle Rogue. Playing against any meta deck and knowing there was a possibility I could win, and did in many cases, because of RNG card is fun.
I do play LOR and it is fantastic to it’s players, in fact, if you have Twitch Prime they are doing another Wild card give away, so go get it. But it feels that, if I fall too far behind, I can’t make a big swing to get back in the game. Now, they are adding more content so something like that could appear. They have added things like stealing cards from your opponent’s deck, so I should probably look into that more.
What? no, of course not. You’re citing a very specific case that doesn’t work in a digital space. Competition incites another to try and reel players in. How would they do that? By making the game better. Giving away free things. This incentivizes players to go and play the game.
Competition is always good. You shouldn’t trust salespersons anyways. You can make up your own mind as a consumer.
What the hell is this comparison?
Likely. I’m not too fond of unfettered Capitalism myself but it’s a truth we live in.
Also I think LoR is fun without RNG. Congrats for bringing up a valid point against Hearthstone. If you think it’s more fun, so be it, I hope you have more fun on Hearthstone.
You can and should be treated way better, though.
An informative post Cyclick thank you !! I have hit a wall with HS, and after playing this along with WoW since its inception, I am no longer enchanted with blizzard’s content at the cost it demands with each expansion…
I really want to continue loving Hearthstone, but they are giving me little reason to remain a loyal fan…
I will try out the alternative you have suggested and see if it quickens my love for CCRs again, because Blizzard (for whatever reason) has failed to keep me as a loyal customer or fan…
Great post OP! I really didn’t want to get into another TCG but MtG Arena is trying to be a version of HS and ended up even worse, and HS is buried in RNG fiesta cards so I need to get my fix somehow. I suppose I will just have to try LoR…
You are thinking of Karma. She doesn’t do that, instead she makes all of your spells cast twice and she’s arguably one of the strongest champs in the game.
A few questions.
How many cards are there in the basic set? How many cards are there in LoR expansions? How often are expansions released?
Let’s keep it real. Saying you can get a full collection doesn’t mean much to everyone. I know that there’s some folks for whom psychologically they must get every card, and I know Blizzard and WOTC prey on them, but fortunately it’s not my problem.
And that seems to be big for you, having a full collection, and the large card numbers in HS might stress you out.
Are you guys paid by the Chinese government or what? Anyone with half a brain knows that LoR is just a cheap China-made copycat of Hearthstone.
It’s cheaper, yes, same as anything made in China. I can bought a bespoke suit with around $100 in Hongkong (lol) while we need about $2000 to get one here in the US. Don’t ever let price decide your buying decision.
It’s not just price, the game is legitimately better. Did you read the post?
There isn’t really conventional sets at the moment.
I’m actually not sure on this one, they’ve just released their road map for card releases but none of the numbers have been disclosed yet.
The schedule details that every 6 months a new region will be released (equivalent to a colour in mtg), and then small card releases in 2 months increments in between.
I’m not very good at explaining, so just have a quick search on YouTube for the video announcement, it’s the most recent one on the runeterra yt channel.
I see what you mean, but you can get a full collection f2p in a couple of months which is insane compared to hs. I get the current card pool is much smaller, but the reward system is so much better rounded that even with new set releases you can still easily keep up.
i think any game feels cheap if you start playing a short time after release
many came to the forums saying shadowverse was cheap and easy to get into for new players when it started
havent anyone saying the same in years
I tried Runeterra but quickly got overwhelmed with all the keywords.
Thanks for your honesty. It’s a little disheartening though since it doesn’t clarify anything.
It’s my understanding that getting specific champions is a pain in the rear without spending money, and since it appears you need multiple copies of specific champions for a deck this could be a bubble popping F2P dream reality check.
