Long time player.
The cards themselves are fun but the play experience is something that is just a rinse and repeat due premade decks. 100% of the games I play without fail is the run of the mill premade decks…each with higher and higher price tags. How is that fun? There is no incentive within the game itself to build your own deck or match against others with unique takes on decks. Anyone else troubled by this at all? Literally, the match you are playing is already predetermined in many ways including the outcome. I seldom leave the game thinking…wow that was fun. Each gaming experience is a carbon copy of my last gaming session with little to no variation.
There has to be a way to incentivize not using the premade decks. Possibly have a mode where premade decks are banned or maybe the matching algorithm looks for unique (no premade decks). Anything. I know that Blizzard has the capacity to solve this issue. Right now for me…this game has no soul with only sporadic glimpses of fun or things that are new. I understand the reasons for pre-made decks but it has become “The” game. You can counter with play “Wild” but for me those game become too unwieldy and not my playstyle.
Just wondering if I am alone in this thinking.
So you’re not having fun because standard is too repetitive with just the same cookie cutter decks that everyone uses?
I totally agree that games often come down to the same plays over and again, with everyone netdecked you absolutely know what your opponent is going to play and what’s going to happen before it does. There’s still some fun I think in trying to bait out a control warrior’s brawl, or forcing a face hunter into running out of resources for instance, but I agree that things can start to get stale. Especially since you’ve been playing a long time like you said. I mean, I’ve only been playing since December and I’m already starting to lost some interest in the game as well so I can see what you mean.
I know it’s a different kind of game, but Arena completely prevents you from bringing some premade deck and is more about how well you can build your deck on the fly and how well you can play with what you’re given. When my brother used to play MtG they had similar modes in tournaments where you had to draft your deck at the table so you couldn’t be assured of having all the best cards available.
But I really think if you want to enjoy Hearthstone as it is right now you should play Casual and use memey decks. You will lose a lot but eventually your MMR will go down enough that you’ll face people using off meta decks just like you want, then you will face all kinds of weird decks trust me.
Well you are playing in standard mode so decks are limited, then you’re also living in modern times where there are so many resources to coming up with decks. Blizzard sees no interest in fixing something that is a society/tech problem. Personally I’d argue you didn’t even think the point of this thread through.
I came here to say the same thing. I don’t care as much about climbing up the ranks as I do playing interesting games. Everyone playing the same standard decks is boring AF. True, Wild & Casual give us that opportunity, but it would also be great to play Standard with some level of effort by my opponents to create unique decks. (For the same reason, I immediately forfeit Murloc decks - Murloc decks are the epitome of “it takes no skill to build and play this deck.”
(and, yeah, this is me venting and not offering solutions - i get that people are more interesting in winning than enjoying an interesting game)
You’re not alone.
When you said the match is predetermined in many ways that resonated with me.
I started thinking of ranked standard as more of an auto battler at some point. Pick your deck and watch it auto battle another deck to see who wins, but that didn’t really help. There’s like only 10 different heroes to auto battle (net decks) and the battles play out the same. It’s kind of like battlegrounds with less choices.
Am currently choosing to take a break from the game. Hopeful that hearthstone can turn it around if it chooses to.
When I had a huge star bonus, I used to play only casual because there are players with random decks.
Now that I finish my bonus at gold rank, I play in ladder (wild) and I face random decks as well.
Try casual if you want variety (careful: if you play casual with a meta deck you will probably win too much and so you will face other people with meta decks).
wild has a lot of different decks, expecially in casual and low ranks.
You can try it even if you don’t have a full wild collection (I don’t have it, I don’t need it).
If you like it, you can invest in crafting wild cards too, eventually

Welcome to every cardgames meta?
What exactly do you expect people to do here? They literally made new decks every expansion and the best ones prevail throughout the expansion and sometimes throughout the whole year.
Then we have the huge limitation to what is actually playable in a “meme-deck”. Easy example, if i start constructing a Dude Paladin then it eventually will look like the meta-deck because the limited amount of cards for such a deck are the same. And if i start switching dude cards for others then its not a Dude Paladin anymore.
Every form of deck was already tried out. Everything a class can do. But not everything is efficient and we all know that losing isnt fun for the vast majority of players. Thus the most efficient decks are played to have the best chance of winning. Incidentally, this situation is part of skillful playing, because if you know the deck of your opponent you can assume what and when a card is being played. This is also the reason why you will see players in tournaments writing stuff down, because they want to know whats in the opponents deck.
