A week into the new season and he is getting crushed by legendary players in bronze 10-8 game after game. Seems like the game is not very new player friendly.
I suspect that Standard has become distilled down to mostly experienced, diehard players, who have no have trouble fielding the best decks and who remain unfazed by how broken or unbalanced a meta might be—creating a scenario that is a nightmare for new players who want to compete on the Ladder.
One can deduce that Hearthstone is having trouble attracting new players or retaining players from:
1). The company no longer publicly releases data about player numbers or profits for Hearthstone.
2). The amount of incentives they are throwing at new players or returning players to entice them to play.
I personally have skipped playing Standard for the last three years (with the exception of playing BSM when it good enough to be a Tier 2 deck), because the mode is so repetitive and poor at providing interactive gameplay.
I have mostly played Arena for the last year, because it tends to provide a slightly more diverse and interactive play experience, but the current meta and card pool results in a lot of very subpar drafts, resulting in a lot of David vs. Goliath type matches. I have thought more than a dozen times this week about taking a break from Hearthstone.
I think HS has mostly been in a bad place for several years, and the attempts by the devs to change this have mostly failed.
It’s the first week of the month, the more “experienced” players are once again climbing back up to legend.
This is why I tend to avoid ranked for the first week or so, it is NOT friendly for new players or for testing homebrews
well i returned after a few yeards out when the Dark Beyond Released and they gave me a dekc with good staples and legendarys, been 3 times now top 100 on the last 3 seasons…
“skill issue”; im a MTG player and a One Piece Player so “you know when you know” you can have mental talks with yourself just looking at the cards saying:
“oh this is red”, oh this is rakdos style (damage Warlock), “oh this is a blue discard loop” (warlock- copy druid death rattles)
“oh this is Blue Black White” Wheel of Death Warlock.
everything that hearthstone has created have a very similar play pattern on other TCGs that uses mana (yugioh its not a real TCG)
so anyone that plays hearthstone at standard have experience on other TCGs, is actively playing other TCGs, or its a first runner.
it will depend on the will of your friend and how competitive he is for card games, if he just wanna have fun then there is no online game for him as this situation repeats itself on every card game at some point you will face people who wants to win by any means necessary and if your friend is not on that train and wants to play “garrosh” because he is cool that is not gonna cut it at some point.
Difference between hearthstone and other TCGs is mechanics. Other TCGs don’t have a discover that you pick from 3 random cards, you can counter spells/creatures reactively, there’s no “get a random spell/creature effect” and there are limits to having legendary/unique cards
Firstly you’d want a cheap deck that can compete, to get wins while building up the collection. Menagerie Death Knight or Egg Token Hunter will suffice.
Secondly you want to sure up his plays by learning when to trade properly, start learning what cards opponents are likely to play. This doesn’t come right away.
I’ve thought of making a series where I take a new account with limited cards and try to win with what I’ve opened, Rarran has done some videos before of getting to Legend without opening a single pack.
How do you know they are legendary?
You only play against players of your MMR, regardless of the rank
A player that was legend last month will never play against a new player, even if they both queue in bronze at the exact same time
Their legendary card backs.
its kind of hard to avoid when every reset you get bonus stars but still start in the lower brackets again. So ofcourse you will see people from higher ranks trying to get back to their old rank again, and since not everyone will do this on day one of the reset you will see them from time to time
And again, you will not see players with different MMR than yours
A high rank player demoted to bronze at the strat of the month will never play against a new bronze player
