Is the game getting more and more tilting?

I don’t know if this happens to anyone else or it’s mostly me, but I find the game more and more frustrating and tilting with every passing expansion. It’s not often just a normal ”welp, I lost this game” More and more often the game goes off in a ”What the heck?! That’s bs!” kind of way. Don’t take me wrong, HS has always been a bit tilting. But it’s just getting more to me over time. It doesn’t affect me badly or anything, before anyone says it. I just log off and come back when I feel like playing more. But it does affect the game experience a lot.

My impression is that so much flashy effect and powercreep in the game also forced the devs to also print all kinds of disruption, RNG effects to decrease consistency, loads and loads of removals, etc. Objection and Counterspell every turn, Solid alibi spam, Dirty Rat/ Patchwerk spam, a variety of very annoying secrets , Reverberations, Yogg or Sylvannas to steal you super strong auras or Titans… The game is just full of massive all-or-nothing swings each turn until someone runs out of steam, either of them whiffs a completely random effect or one player manages to draw its I win card after spending a game not letting the opponent play.

So my point with this whole thread isn’t so much to discuss wether the game is or isn’t balanced or fun (I think it actually is both things to a much higher degree than what people on this forum usually describe). The main point is to discuss why (or if) the game is getting more and more tilting and frustrating to play; and what should change to fix that in future expansions. I doubt devs read this forum much, if at all, but I think it’d be feedback worth sharing.

Game is, and forever has been, a high roll simulator.

I high roll? I win.
Enemy high roll? I lose.

Where’s the tilt in that? GG go next regardless of result.

Cards have become too strong.

That’s literally it.

Every time I think of Power Creep I think of Bronze Explorer.

3 Mana 3/3 Lifesteal
Battlecry: Discover a Dragon.

And what’s funny about it is that a card like this is deemed too weak to be played in today’s Hearthstone. That’s where the Power Creep is.

Yeah I feel the same. Feels like the game is a casino. I really miss board based gameplay.

Yogg has really soured my experience with the game.

The team does sound like they’re working on balancing the game quicker. But it still doesn’t feel quick enough.

I attempt to answer your question with another question: is it more frustrating to get soloed by your enemy’s yogg box, or your own? That sums up the Hearthstone experience these days.

Obviously your opponent’s. If you run box yourself, you’re a certified cool cat who doesn’t get salty just because random happens.

Only if you let it tilt you.

It’s past time for most here to understand that card games just aren’t that important.

the poster is right the game has massive board swings that define completely the balance of the game and it’s in his current state very bad

the powercreep is too powerful , don’t be surprised if players leave the game , beginners will never be able to adapt all this by not having like 80 % of the card pool .

everyone can reverse board nowadays with yogg or AOEs

No videogame is important, and I have gotten tilted at competitive videogames more times than I can remember. Sports aren’t important, and yet people all around the world get pretty tilted and frustrated by them literally all of the time. It’s perfectly natural to experience these kind of emotions in any competitive context, no matter how unimportant, be that cards or a football match with friends. Managing these emotions appropriately and not letting them get the best of you is what adults do and I have zero issues in that respect, you can rest assured

However, I think that what I describe is an important aspect of gameplay that is worth discussing. The game is seemingly getting more and more frustrating for many players and I think there a reason for it that needs some correction in the future.

I don’t know dude. I’m coming back from a break but usually it’s not tilt that makes me leave, I hit legend on EU and US and then I get bored.

I think I used to “rage” like 8 years ago but I cared a lot more about winning back then and I was a lot worse at the game.

Power creep is a thing, but that’s pretty relative.

I’m super chilled when I play the game but to be fair, it’s very rare I play without a beer to accompany it.

The game died when discover was introduced as a mechanic. We’re never getting the old game back. These devs are braindead.

The main problem of the game is that I think… in the old times… you could wait until something good showed up from your deck… but nowdays… if you get no good cards in the first rounds… you are dead because the aggro became insane strong and fast… control has too many board clears and recycling of cards by discovery and other effects… not to mention mana cheat… Need to remove infinity from the game. You just don’t have time to draw out proper cards because the enemy does more than 15 dmg to your 30 HP in the first 4 rounds… and THIS is where the problems begin… Need to make an end to control unlimited tools, and the mass buffing of aggro… and for the OTK as well… Need to make things slowed down again to have time for fun…

This implies the game comes down to a coil toss. Which it doesn’t. It’s not that the game is random, it’s that the game lacks interaction points. People have too many outs from when they’ve gotten themselves into a bad situation, and the outs are too basic.

And it’s not that it isn’t there at all. But it’s not what the game’s about.

I think the game has become something else from what it was years ago. Value and Board mattered the most for a time. Not to mention class identity was a thing. Now, it’s solitaire, top-deck, did-they-draw-it kind of games.

To play devil’s advocate, this doesn’t mean the game isn’t playable or not fun, however, it is so for some people, myself included.

I think it all started with Discover and everything else was fueled by this supposed “need” for power creep, which is fine, but it’s arguably out of hand.

I could go on and on, but at the end of the day, I’m talking about my perspective, which is this game is very much going in the wrong direction, but other people do enjoy it. The way I solved my tilt was to stop playing Standard completely. BGs are what keep my playing HS, but I play very few games these days, especially with anomalies.

Edit: For the record, I’m not saying Discover or any other Evergreen mechanic can’t exist, but it seems these days the ratio of benefit : risk has greatly shifted in the direction of power, thus the top deck/solitaire feeling of games. For example, a lot of Lock cards used to rely on Health or risking discarding a card, now there are cards that either just have the benefit without the risk or cards that remove the risk.

TOns of tilters since day 1.

The problem with that discussion is that there is no way to advance into it.

There are some key aspects in general that you could not let enter the game and i can give the discussion that but…

After a certain point people start creating excuses because it’s near impossible to have 0 negative experience and it would not even be fun to have 0 negative experiences.

I think everyone can agree that if a card said :
Look at your opponents entire deck and discord a card.

It would probably not be fun.

But then we gonna really be mad at gnomeferatu because of the gambling aspect of the card?

Hearthstone care about not tilting people far more than it should already but reality is that for some people it will never be enough.

I usually sit on the toilet while playing :slightly_smiling_face: I will try adding a beer into the equation

The power creep could have been tolerable even in todays game. The real problem came when they just handed out cheap/efficient and plentiful card draw to everyone. I’m sure it was a conscious decision to speed the game up for mobile but it’s done nothing but damage to the game overall IMO.
