IMO this is the best meta ever in hearthstone

I just hit legend for the first time tonight (yay!) And I hadn’t even come close ever before, highest was low platinum I think. I played from when the first expansion was out (years ago) for a few years on and off and then came back like a day or 2 before the SC2 miniset (utterly coincidentally) after having not played for years. I just had an itch for a card strategy game.

And I’ve had so much fun with this SC minset it’s crazy. I didn’t look at any decks or top decks/strategies anything, and just started at bottom of bronze with my Rogue and purchased the SC2 set with all my gold saved up from years past, excited to see what it was like (I love and still play SC2). Had tons of fun with the archons up to around gold. I saw terran starship was a strong deck and then the bomb warrior (ugh) and then the death knight zerg decks started to be recurring and powerful. So I adjusted, packing in a bunch of silence and did pretty well, but I got wiped out utterly by a protoss mage who did stunning damage with a colossus and I’m like wow that’s a deck I want to try.

So I laddered with it all the way up, making quite a few little variations all my own to respond to me dying in various ways. And it gradually became more effective.

But on the way I’ve seen so many utterly different, really effective decks, like a huge number of all classes with multiple really powerful strategies per class, some that take you completely by surprise and others that are variations but different enough to be interesting.

And I had an utterly fantastic time throughout the whole thing. I never got bitterly frustrated like I remember being many times in the past (remember secret hunter who at turn 6 could have 4 3x3’s). Endless repeating of terran ships initially came close but i was able to work around it, and death knight zerg was consistently probably the hardest deck I had to face (The boom card for Warrior is the closest for me to being a frustrating card, but thankfully I was able to strategise a little around it, it can still be devastating but I didn’t end up having to play against it massively often). Death knight seemed to come down to who got what cards a little BUT I really felt that against that deck and all of those powerful decks there is genuine strategy every game that really makes a big difference to winning or losing. The cards you draw are yes quite important in that matchup and it changes how each game plays but alot of the time it felt there was room to manoeuvre.

Which is fantastic because I love it when Hearthstone rewards clever play and deckbuilding and I really feel this meta more than any other I’ve played rewards it most.

So thank you for the fun Blizzard, I’m so glad I coincidentally came back to be here for the SC miniset, and because I kept playing it for fun I naturally just kept climbing to Legend, the only time I’ve enjoyed the meta enough to.

I’ll keep having fun on legendary but the rush of getting to the top of platinum and then diamond, man its heart pounding haha, so much fun.

Welcome back and keep having fun! Far from the best state the game has ever been but thats my opinion. As long as you enjoy it thats enough. New expansion drops next month so be prepared for new content.

Yea that’ll be great to see the new expansion. Now I’ve hit L and gotten familiar with many of the deck types it will be fun to see what’s next in store.

I’m curious my friend, can you reel off any of the times you thought Hearthstone was in its best state? I started off just thinking ‘wow I love this meta’ and then realised being honest with myself that it was the most fun I can remember.

aside from the fact that blizzard is a company that authorizes the use of bots in arena and is complicit in the sale of barcode accounts, it’s a wonderful meta :joy::joy::joy:

1st period was Whisper of the old gods-ungoro-knights of the frozen throne. 2nd was Sunken city- Castle Nathria- Lich king. By far the best years for me with great warcraft themes, new fun solo adventures, unique original gameplay and far slower and harder games. Gameplay wise the decisions, the trades, the positions mattered more. It was much more about you vs the person and who plays it better than a race of who outlasts who with obsurd stats and board clears. That’s me though some might disagree.

Nice thanks for answering. When I asked that my first guess would have been around whisper of the old gods/ungoro they were fun times. I do remember solo adventures, they were fun! Ones like Blackrock etc. With comical dialogue etc and fun mechanics.

I’m with you its most fun when there’s real skill in playing rather than overpowered cards /a no-brainer deck that generally wins. But to my memory even back in that first period there were really powerful cards that if you didn’t have you pretty much couldn’t compete, which is why I never took it as seriously back then. Just my memory tho.

I think you liked the set because of the package it provided. It’s nice to get bunch of playable cards only for gold + plus returning player deck. Its much more new/returning player friendly nowadays. Keep having fun anyways!

I think you’re right, it strongly set up the archetype/goal of SC decks and from there it was just working out which remaining cards aided that as best as possible and interrupted the other popular decks. I will and likewise!

Problem is that they powercrept the hell out of a minisets cards and past 2 years of cards and archetypes are completely unplayable. That’s frustrating for some that payed and played for various other expansions to get overshadowed by a simple mini set.

That’s true but isn’t that always the case? From memory whenever a new expansion comes out the new strategies/card synergies usually blow the old away, with select few top-end strategies/select cards remaining in play. To me with a game like Hearthstone its that ‘new-ness’ that’s the fun-factor (and levelling of the playing field as everyone goes back to the drawing board).

I totally get what you’re saying, in some ways it would be nice if earlier strategies before the mini-set were still effective if you added in just a couple of new cards but wouldn’t it be a bit more boring if the same strategies more or less hung around over months/years? Then you really would get more of a stale meta wouldn’t you?

For me personally I’m happy to grind a bit to unlock new cards or purchase them and not necessarily have a full set straight away but I get that people who want to be instantly competitive and have all the new cards purchased its a fair bit of money.

…I’ve thought about this while I’ve been writing and actually, because it’s a Starcraft-themed miniset, this one HAD to be all out with the power creep to really feel like you were playing with your protoss/zerg/terran against the other races. Otherwise people would just ignore the set and the SC feeling wouldn’t be there. So with this strong a theme (and Starcraft is a backbone of Blizzard, their joint flagship IP with Warcraft), it had to happen.

But lets see what happens with the new one!
