The esport scene dwindled because Blizzard killed, completely, the prize pools for it this year. The prize pool is completely pathetic, if they intend the game to be an esport.
You don’t disprove anything if you pinpoint, you just tell me I’m right. Anyway the year you mentioned the game had a lot less RNG. HS e-sports started to decline 3-4 years ago (more or less) when too much discover BS was introduced in the game.
And why did they remove the rewards in the first place? Because not enough people were watching.
Because it was no longer profitable. There was a very big esports following until they went to youtube streaming as their medium. They completely killed it last year by removing the fiscal incentive to actually be competitive.
I dont have the numbers anymore than you do, but I am VERY confident in my claim that they didnt gain as much revenue that they would have if they had stayed on Twitch.
Youtube was, at that time, simply not up to par for live streaming. Not even close.
I don’t think that Ignite is bad design so much as incompatible design. By which I mean, it was released at a time when Mage combo decks were drawing themselves to what would otherwise be fatigue before they had reached ten mana crystals. Therefore, it didn’t function as a quirky unpredictable offense, but as a guaranteed offense AND a defense against one’s own excesses in the form of fatigue damage prevention.
Whether it should be made Core or not would depend upon whether we can expect Blizzard to keep its collective foot off the gas pedal as far as card draw is concerned. Frankly, I don’t see that happening. I foresee Mage once again drawing their entire decks in the near future.
If you mean advertiser revenue then of course you’re right.
But if you mean advertiser revenue plus whatever YouTube paid them for exclusivity, then probably not. YouTube was under the delusion that they could compete with Twitch on the eSports front if they just threw their financial weight around. It was they who lost big on the deal, not ActiBlizz.
When it was played straight-up, I thought it was fine.
But it tilted me extremely hard when it got cast by Rune of the Archmage or Thief Rogue. Congrats, now I have to deal with your original plan and ALSO the fact that you are immune to fatigue and put me on a clock…
