Game showing video lag on new computer

Hi, been playing hearthstone for years on a variety of computers with very few problems–always very smooth with high settings on 1920x1080.

I just upgraded to a Ryzan 7 3700x 8-core @ 3.69ghz, 32g ram, rtx 3070, etc., and I’m getting really ugly video lag. I don’t know how to describe it, just that the animations of the cards and playing the cards is choppy.

I uncapped the frames thinking that maybe hearthstone was forcing 60fps (and it was, though that wasn’t a problem with my old cpu), but even though uncapped the frames got me to 400+, it’s still very choppy. Forced the frames to 144 (monitor refresh rate) thinking that might solve it, still choppy.

I tried different resolutions–game looks sharp, background animations on gameboard are sharp, and cards in hand are sharp. It’s just when playing a card, or when a card pops into the hand that it feels really choppy.

Any advice? All drivers are up to date.

Meanwhile playing warzone on ultra silky smooth…

I have the same problem.
Game get slower and slower and after a few matchups, the animations break the game. At this point hearthstone does not respond and i have to restart it.

Hey there,

Could you both provide a DxDiag file? Copy and paste the text file created and paste it between two ~~~ like so:

DxDiag Here

If you have issues pasting here, use Pastebin and post the end of the link. (ie. 123456 for pastebin.com/123456)

Pastebin #: D3nJb1p5

Not sure why it’s not formatting correctly when I type the link in.

Thanks!

File is 6 days online.

Thanks.

SpaceCat,

Not seeing much in the Dxdiag jumping out that can cause this. The file does look to lack some information though such as the Windows Error Reporting(WER) area. We also don’t see programs that may interfere in a Dxdiag.

Frostbyte,

The same goes for you in that I saw nothing jumping out within the Dxdiag. It did include all the information yet lacked the WER area. That’s not too abnormal though, but does also mean I can’t check if the system is giving errors that can explain this.

For both of you I’d want to try a couple general steps. A ticket may be best to better dig in though since an Msinfo file can be useful for additional information.

The more general ideas are

  1. Make sure no programs are running in the background. Overlays and deck trackers are common causes of issues in Hearthstone.
  2. Let’s see if creating and switching to a new Administrator Account helps. This sets many settings to defaults and also helps with permission problems, so can be useful to do even if you’re using an admin account already.
  3. Checking for overheating and performance problems may help. If you wind up submitting a ticket, including a screenshot(or more) of the information HWmonitor shows after you start noticing issues can help us with checking and noting what is seen to better narrow down what’s going on.

With the latest Hearthstone expansion the performance is dropping hard. My hardware monitor showed a lot of CPU spikes when the lag occurred.

  • no overheating problems so far - monitoring GPU & CPU
  • using no overlays or deck trackers
  • closing the launcher while playing does not help

I found a possible fix on youtube to reduce the lag input by forcing Hearthstone to DirectX9. Within Game Settings i checked the additional command line argument for Hearthstone and entered the command -force-d3d9. Restarting the launcher is necessary.
Forcing to DirectX9 the game runs significant smoother. Testing the settings in some match ups. If it continuous, i will open a ticket.

@frostbyte, that’s awesome! Forcing dx9 makes the game run smooth again!

@Irontorne, any idea why this is happening?

Also i noticed some weird graphic glitches, when using DirectX11 in Hearthstone.

For example:

  • shiny outlines around a played card did not match with the border. Displayed right through a card
  • background is over colored when leaving a match to fast. It seems like a implemented graphic filter is going nuts
  • stealth animation from minions are flickering
  • pink artifacts appeared on golden border around the hero portrait

So using DirectX9 is fine for now. Game performance is all right. :upside_down_face: So far i got zero crashes.

Hey there! My apologies for the late reply as I was first on weekend and then on other duties so didn’t get to check for replies until just now.

That is great to hear that switching to DirectX9 helped out with the performance slowdowns Frostbyte! It is a bit odd that it helped and I’m still not certain that SpaceCat’s issue is the same or would be affected by this workaround.

If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say it’s something to do with the graphics since you’re changing the graphical API to work around the slowdowns. The driver looks as up-to-date as possible, so either a reset or reinstall of it may be needed if it’s damaged somehow. I can’t guarantee it will work, but is worth a try if you wanted to go further. I haven’t seen any bug reports for this, yet that doesn’t mean one isn’t occurring either.

SpaceCat, I’m afraid I don’t have much more to offer beyond what you can get already in this forum thread. The Msinfo file would be best for a technical specialist to check out. Since it can contain some personally identifiable information, we try not to ask for such in a public forum like this and instead ask for that ticket to be created so it’s protected by the automated systems and security.
