What is the best way to aquire diamond mercenary portraits?
If card packs is the ONLY option, how many card packs would it require? If anyone is able to do the math it would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks all!

The “story” quest gives you lots of packs. Completing task 16, 17, & 18 for each Merc gives you a pack each. I would say the best way is to not open any packs you acquire until you’ve famed every legendary. Then a portrait will pop for each pack you open that would have been a Legendary since you already have them all.
Are you sure you would get one every pack? Since I got all the rare mercs and skins most of my packs just give coins.
When the pack rolls, IF one of the spots rolls that it should be a Legendary Card then it could roll down to being a Portrait instead. Or it could be Legendary coins. But that’s better odds than also having Legendary cards in the mix.
But also, who’s to say they haven’t been tweeking/messing with the way packs roll. I just think this would be the best way since it removes one of the possible things the pack could roll too.
From Blizzard’s own explanation FAQ explains it better than I could (https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/000032545)
average of 20 packs for a legendary they said,
but i doubt that information so let’s make it 40.
you need to get same legendary 5 times to get diamond portrait.
i don’t even know they can roll duplicate skin or not.
it’s even worse if you can hit duplicate cosmetics.
so it’s basically
40 packs * all legendary * 5 times hit average
[someone else claimed you can get legendary skin before all legendary mercenaries which actually different from what the packs said.]
it’s a miracle to hit diamond skin on 200 packs by hitting the same legendary mercenaries 5 times in a row.
but let’s call out an exaggerate number of 4000 packs to hit a diamond.
disclaimer :
it might sound crazy, but i am to biased at this point so i really put exaggerated number.
to be fair, the mercenaries packs doesn’t even prioritize legendary mercenaries over legendary cosmetics just like their description.
[mercenary priority applied only for rare]
someone also claim they open 90 packs without hitting legendary skin / mercenaries.
[i didn’t count total legendary by the way, that’s why i didn’t do the math because i didn’t know the number.]
Where did the needing to get the same legendary 5 times thing come from? You don’t need all golds before you get a diamond skin.
some one said you need all skin before the next skin hit diamond skin.
i didn’t check it’s validity,
but i believe random stranger more than hearthstone in game text at this point.
and more inclined to believe it’s work that way considering 3 recent hotfixes are very quick to come out despite bugs and typo in game is ignored.
Naw, you don’t need all the skins pre-diamond.
The only skin I have for Garrosh aside from default is the diamond.
Well tried linking imgur for proof but apparently can’t include links in my post, lol.
So, the chance of getting at least 1 portrait in your pack is dependent on two things:
So, your pack rolled a portrait. What now?
If you don’t own any of the Merc’s skins, it’s initially a 10% chance to roll the Diamond portrait and 30% for the golds.
This percentage changes depending on what you don’t have yet (So if you happened to get the Diamond portrait first, the next time the pack rolls that Merc it’ll be 33.3% for each of the Golden portraits)
When you obtain a Mercenary Portrait, the drop rate for the remaining Mercenary Portraits is dynamically recalculated, with new proportions based on your individual collection of Portraits for that Mercenary.
So instead if you happen to open a Golden first, the next time, your chances of getting a Diamond should go up to 14.28% while getting one of the 2 goldens you don’t have yet would be 42.86%, if my calculations are correct.
No, you can get Diamond without getting the others first, but supposedly it’s a lower probability than a normal skin (somewhere around 5-10%, with a 30% chance for each golden skin), meaning that it’s unlikely that you will get a Diamond before getting at least 1 golden.
