Years ago There was the Physical WOW TCG’s where certain cards gave Items for WOW like a Pet, Mount or a Toy. I feel with the Achievmenet System that Hearthstone has would make for a Way for people to obtain those items aother way instead of trying to find cards (with a chance the card being fake) and pay Hundreds of $$ to get them.
This sounds like something better asked for on the WoW forums.
But I can’t see this happening anyways. If I’m not mistaken, the black market auction house sells at least some of the previous TCG items. Even ignoring that, why wouldn’t blizz do some lootbox type stuff?
And finally,
It makes more sense for WoW just do that with their own achievement system. If you’re thinking of being able to earn everything then you’d need to be able to exchange achievement points for rewards rather than have some “earn X achievement to unlock” type thing.
There’s only one other MMO I can think of that had a TCG - Star Wars Galaxies. And they went the gacha route.
What i was thinking was the Loot cards were from WOW’s Physical TCG’s, with Hearthstone being more of a Digital Version that they seem to be more into then the TCG version to me would make more sense to bring those Loot Items over to Hearthstone.
I mean, they did give a hearthstone horse mount for playing hearthstone back in the day. Also the hearthstone gameboard and a flippable card.
I definitely think cross-over rewards are a great way to drum up interest. With “Lich King” stuff in full swing, I’d totally been down for anything like unlocking a Death Knight-only Frostmourne transmog in WoW.
For keeping things a bit more “evergreen” though, I’m honestly shocked they haven’t implemented a way of challenging someone to a match of Hearthstone IN WoW. I can’t even imagine the technical hurdles that would bring, but I could certainly see that expanding things.
Beyond that, I’d say I’m also a bit surprised they haven’t really expanded beyond just the Warcraft series. I feel like I could totally see Starcraft units or even Diablo monsters working well for Hearthstone. I suppose at that point, maybe the name “Hearthstone” is too closely linked to Warcraft to really venture out? But even simple stuff, like a “Dark Wanderer” swap for Gul’dan, or Tyrael in place of Uther (spawning “Angelic warriors” instead for his Hero power).
They’ve played around a bit with referencing other Blizzard IPs, but Hearthstone has always been primarily tied to Warcraft. When it launched, it even had a subtitle of “Heroes of Warcraft”. The major time they really crossed the streams was when Diablo was a Duels hero for a limited time. There’s still a Duels treasure, Black Soulstone, that gives you Diablo cards, although the hero itself is no longer available.
