Hello,
I’ve been experiencing an issue with the main quest “[MAIN] STARSIGN”. The objective is to “Defeat Lassal the Flame-spun and enter Hell 1.”
Character Level: 60 Server: Sescheron
I am unable to complete the quest and progress further. The demonic portal remains grey and doesn’t allow me to enter. I have been stuck on this quest for 2 years and hope someone can help resolve this issue.
Thank you for your assistance!

There are a number of pre-requisite quests before you visit the tree in the middle of Westmarch to take on Lassal the Flame Spun raid boss.
One of the most-often overlooked is the quest that requires you to complete a low level Challenge Rift, in order to defeat an NPC called Pyl in order to obtain Pyl’s Remains. This quest item needs to be handed into an NPC who will then progress the questline towards the raid boss kill requirement.
The issue here is that Pyl’s Remains are not properly flagged as a quest item. This means that if you have the quest item and you visit the Blacksmith and choose to Salvage Remains, whilst this should only salvage remains that have dropped from Raid Bosses, it will also salvage Pyl’s Remains, leaving you without the quest item to progress the questline.
If that is what has happened, i.e. you’ve salvaged the quest item, there is currently no known way to fix this as it is not possible to re-acquire the quest item (e.g. by re-doing the Challenge Rift, as the NPC will not be present), meaning that your hero will never be able to progress the questline that involves killing Lassal, and unlocking access to Hell 1 difficulty (which, in turn, is needed for all subsequent difficulty level unlocks).
If this is what you’ve done your hero is, unfortunately, irrevocably broken and will never be able to progress out of Normal difficulty. At that stage, you have no other option than to start a new hero and ensure that you do not salvage the Pyl’s Remains quest item.
This issue was reported to Blizzard at least a year ago, probably closer to 18+ months ago, and they have never acknowledged it, fixed it, or given a way to re-acquire the quest item.
