I think people either misunderstand what “broken” means in the OP or are intentionally trolling. I am having the same issue with this boss. I’m by no means a top level player but a returning player who has been steadily going through the content with casual progressive leveling. None of the other content has been an issue in terms of difficulty or gear/leveling. It takes a bit of time to get through the first phase of this fight and then I hit a point during the second El’Druin survive phase where the game just freezes. That is broken, not some “skill” issue.
broken means its unplayable or unbeatable for everyone. You mention ‘other content’ but there has never been a fight like Diablo in the game before to compare it to. Baal was the closest when he was first released and there was similar complaints. Diablo is the current endgame boss of the storyline, he shouldn’t be ‘easy’. He is purposely a challenge, if you cant beat him get stronger and try again, there is nothing lost in waiting.
You mention about freezing mid fight, that’s an issue but that doesn’t mean he’s broken, it means there is another issue at play. Are you mobile or PC?
It isn’t a matter of difficulty. The fight is not difficult. I am not complaining about the difficulty of the fight and the mechanics are not difficult. The game literally freezes on my PC during the phase that has been mentioned. I have a relatively new PC with a decent setup and this game should not break like that and it is repeatable. With new content for games, bugs and glitches can happen all the time, and they can happen for only a certain percentage of players quite often, especially on PC. The rest of what you mentioned is just semantics.
This is why I asked if you were on PC, its not the fight. Its the damn windows 24h2 update. This has been confirmed by Windows as an issue on their end and all we can do is wait for a patch.
I’m on Windows 10 still.
Okay, I just beat the fight on my phone with no freeze issues at the second mob phase in part 2 of the fight. Yeah, I suspect it’s a game breaking bug on PC, probably not universal and probably not for players who are high spec who just out DPS the fight. So tenuously, for now, for anyone experiencing the same issues on PC and also play on their phones that might be a work around to beat the MSQ fight.
As for the fight itself, I think it is way too tedious to fight Diablo again. It’s not difficult, just tedious. If the idea is that you are either fighting Diablo’s false illusion in the first phase or just part of a multi-phase fight then the mechanics either should have been way different in the first phase. Or the HP should have been half of what it normally is in the first phase and you would have gotten the point across that it was a “false” Diablo. My fight was 110 million HP for both bosses, so 55 million would have been much better in the first phase and then 110 in the second. The second phase is a much better and more engaging fight mechanically.
It’s a terror rift with Diablo at the center periodically. If you use El Drun properly its easy. Sorry you are having difficulties.
Oooops… I did it again. Last one of my characters, weakest one, since I only use it every now and then. Hadn’t touched it for a month or so, still in Inferno 3 (doesnt’ have level, CR or stats for Inferno 4). Tried the last quest (I had not even started it yet). No problems at all. Had some trouble to defeat Verathiel, but in the Diablo fight, El’druin charged normally, the hero was killed a couple of times, no timers, no kicks out of the fight, no freezes. Full story Quest completed in less than one hour.
Playing on PC, Windows 11 Pro 23H2. Core i5 10400 CPU, 32 GB RAM, GTX 1080ti GPU.
I’m sorry that it’s having issues for some people / devices, that’s the problem with multiplatform games, I guess, it’s too difficult to make sure that patches/updates will run fine in ALL kinds of devices/systems. But I still believe that a game feature is only broken/bugged when the issue affects ALL players. This is not trolling, it’s just my opinion. No one is obliged to agree or like it.
I am in the same situation as you, Quack. Very disappointed, having wasted way too much time respawning and trying to get El’druin to recharge.
Hopefully this will get fixed and I can finish the storyline. Not much sense in playing if the story doesn’t progress.
around 167M in EVERY difficult (even on Normal) without any difference in damage dealt which is already absurd enough
The fight is normalized to your dmg and hp values just like rifts or cyrangar defense/purge meaning that all cr and secondary requirements are only just 1 on every difficulty and doesn’t matter on which difficulty you enter.
At 2.8k reso I was able to beat him in like 3 minutes and for me he had 190M hp. If you struggle try to fight him with a proper pve dps build which should be fairly easy now that you can extract GP from 1* and 2* gems.
Update with good and bad news;
Good: I defeated Diablo!
Bad: I was forced to switch to Tempest, a lovely but very broken class, to defeat Diablo; that is, a broken class to be able to defeat a broken character. I suppose I managed to avoid the “0 fps” issue on my PC because of the insane DPS Tempest does so I was fast to get past that section. And I took about 1 hour to defeat Diablo too.
One interesting detail is Diablo’s health was “slightly” smaller this time, 165M instead of 167M HP.
Therefore, I am not happy and I still stand to my Original Post 100%! I feel dread to “have to” switch to Tempest when I play with my other 2 characters (Barbarian and Demon Hunter).

Really 1 hour? You must do around 100k dps on dummy than which would mean you are doing something very wrong.
Contrary to the title of the thread, he is very possible to kill, solo, on main quest.
Given he is the ultimate boss and even has a franchise of games named after him, he should be hard. It should require effort to kill him. The hitpoints are only part of the equation.
If you die to him, that should be expected. You will try and try again until you win.
I actually think he was far too easy. I went in thinking he was going to toss me around the place like a ragdoll. This is Diablo after all, first encounter.
I beat him soundly. Was disappointing tbh…
Took me less than 2 weeks to finish off the story line and end up with the Diablo fight. I also cannot beat it. That’s because the exp boost artificially propelled me to Paragon 620 in no time but did not allow the proper development of the character through accumulation.
Consequently, my gems are trash and resonance is less than 800. My secondary gems are rank 3. My gear is lvl 16. I do not expect to beat Diablo with this despite my paragon level or the fact that the quest log shows the quest in green font. (doable apparently)
It’s the last remaining thing I need to get done to ‘beat’ the game. But I won’t spend another half hour trying it nor will I be running the hamster wheel endlessly like so many others do just to accomplish it. Too much of an unreasonable time sink in my opinion.
At this point, I feel I beat the game anyway and have seen all the content at least once. It’s not terribly important to try to defeat an event that’s essentially flawed from the start. I’d rather take the time to try other games that may give a better sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.
Quests in green aren’t an indication that they’re easy.
It just means that they’re storyline or guide quests.
@Meteorblade
You’re wrong.
Quests show up in red, orange and green, based upon the difficulty it presents at your current level. Just like monster difficulty text in Challenge rifts or Helliquary.
I’ve played the game since the day it was released.
Every single Guide quest I’ve ever obtained was green.
Every single Storyline quest I’ve ever obtained was orange.
Not once have I had a red quest. Not once.
Removed by me as the comment was inflammatory and uncalled for.
This is the character I used 4 days ago to complete the quest. It wasn’t a Monk then, but a BK. I changed class a couple of days ago, because I already have another way more powerful BK. As you can see, the numbers are quite similar to yours, only I have one rank 5 Sapphire and most other gems are rank 4 with 2-3 at rank 3. Also worth mentioning that in the 4 days since I did the quest, I have gained almost 30 Paragon levels, have got and upgraded some new equipment items, both legendary and set, so those were a bit lower (CR was around 38400 at the time). It’s true that it took me almost an hour to defeat Diablo, but… I did it, so it can be done.
You are wrong, Bleat.
The color indicates the characteristic (type) of the quest.
