[ Bug ] Unable to get rid of the chat notification speech bubble

Okay, so in this morning’s patch we had…

Quality-Of-Life Social Updates

Incoming direct messages from friends will now be consolidated and harder to miss.

Developer’s Note: We heard lots of community feedback that you were missing your friends’ direct messages. We apologize for the rifts in your friendship this must have caused.

On PC, a new chat bubble icon will appear for any unread direct messages. On Mobile, a small Unread Messages banned will show up in the chat for any direct messages received.

When I logged in this morning, that little bubble showed 64.

When I clicked on it, it took me to a direct message chat from someone that had sent me 2 messages whilst I was offline last night. It’s now at 62…

I have now gone into the main chat window, clicked on the Players section, and scrolled through every single direct message I’ve got in there (some of which are from many days ago) and this count is not being reduced.

Is there no way to acknowledge / clear this entire stack of notifications?

I do not have 62 unread direct messages.

Is this functionality that can be disabled somewhere in the options?

I also went into my Friends chats and scrolled all the way back through them (some as far back as March / April) and this did not affect the notification count.

Ok so not just me, the numbers so small I thought I was reading it wrong. I’m guessing it’s registering something other than direct messages but no idea what that could be

Rest assured, I have clicked on every single one of the nine sections of chat, and scrolled back through the entire available history of messages in every single one of them. It made absolutely no difference to the count. Heck, I even checked if the My Log section loot messages could be it. Nope.

Here’s a wild hunch…

Could it be registering messages that were sent by players you have on your Block List but, as you’ll never see them, you have no way to see them / acknowledge them, for them to be removed from the count. Could this be Susan’s plat adverts?

84 after blocking bot with no change for while logged off for hour now at 97

My count when I logged out last night about 8 hours ago was still 73.
When I logged in this morning, it’s up to 91 and I have zero new player messages.

After logging out this afternoon for a few hours…

I still have zero unread direct messages.

My notification is now up to 123, with zero unread direct messages…

Well, the number’s going down, but two weeks later this is still bugged…

If you can’t fix it, could you just turn it off?

This is worse than no notification, because it’s training people to ignore the notification.
