Fenris is still running rampant. And no it is not my computer like so many people like to suggest. If it is my computer, then how did I play the first 2 weeks with no problems and then the patches and updates come out and all of sudden I start crashing??? And the crashes back then weren’t even Fenris. Now all crashes the past week I have been reporting have all been Fenris. Yes, my computer is being affected by something in Blizzard’s coding that is obviously not affecting EVERYONE. It was just like last season. Couldn’t play at all to start the season. First Blizzard says it is a dlss issue. Nope. Then they come out and say they are working with Nvidia to get things resolved which they finally did. But again, NOT EVERYONE was affected by this, but I sure was. This doesn’t make it my problem. It is Blizzard’s. Obviously unless the majority of players have an issue, Blizzard doesn’t care about the whatever small percentage of players are being negatively affected by crashes. Thanks for the support.
Ok look… I’m going to make this as simple as possible for you since you seem to not understand what is going on when someone tries to help and respond.
FENRIS
Blue post (Blizz staff) From this post:
Moving on:
I posted a while back that YOU need to open the folder these Fenris.txt crash files are located. Then you need to find the most recent one in there and open it with a text editing program like Notepad.
Now, if you do not want to follow my original instructions to copy that info into a Pastebin (NO ACCOUNT REQUIRED FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS), then you have the option to skim through the log files in the Fenris.txt file yourself and try to decipher which lines are pertinent errors.
I strongly suggest you follow my original Pastebin instructions (below this)
- copy the info in the newest Fenris.txt crash file
- paste it into a new
pastebin.com
page - click CREATE NEW PASTE at the bottom
- NO ACCOUNT NEEDED
- share the page link that is generated back here and please not 7 posts later
Check the support article below
Select Windows / Mac
Select Diablo IV from the drop down menu
Follow the instructions on that page
Then if you want someone to look at the most recent FenrisDebug.txt file, copy and paste the entirety of the .txt file to a new pastebin.
pastebin.com
At the bottom hit Create New Paste
Then share the pastebin link back here
You can share links with ` on each side of the link (before and after).
https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/82454
Once you’ve provided the pastebin link we can look at the information that’s inside the .txt file and provide some information to help you figure out the issue.
Here’s a hint… IT’S NOT THE GAME
I’ve yet to see in the 7 posts you’ve made complaining about the same Fenris issues where you’ve listed the type of pc hardware and drivers you’re using.
But don’t worry, a decent amount of that information will likely be inside the Fenris file.
Hi, thanks for your efforts, if I may,
If you can and want to check and advise, I’d be delighted, here are:
-
latest crash fenris txt of the 8th crash of yesterday
D4 Fenris issue 091720242356 - Pastebin.com -
Today fenris file of start (had to wait 10 minutes)

[edit]
With the game, and only with the game (everything else works fine on my laptop)
- After character selection and start, takes ages to load (10 minutes, sometimes more), some times fails to
- Once character party loaded, freezes specially when starting a new activity (starting a first horde I die twice in the first seconds because of freezes), or whenever accessing inventory or and NPC interaction,
- Enventually disconnects after some time (“reconnecting to diablo” in the upper left corner of the screen): loose map access (other than through options menu), map displayed “empty” (no portal, no events, nothing, just the map), still can walk through and play.
- While teleporting on “landing” get an empty screen (black screen, bar with empty life, ressource, skills, inserted map window emply…), music playing in the background, nothing happens.
- Sometimes while playing audio gets disconnected,
- …
I spend as much time managing these interrutpions as actually playing, and many times I cannot even get started. It all started in may 2024, after a patch.
I have done all what is doable by an enduser using standard protocols provided: reinstalled my OS, the game, updated bios, drivers, tuned down settings IG, … and I do not mess arround with anything else. So far no progresss, it seems to get worst.
I took a look through the logs, one thing stood out to me on the first was these lines:
E 2024.09.17 21:37:03.624044 115869 | [Game] The user 0 appears to have a bad pack container id 7fffffffffffffff |
---|---|
E 2024.09.17 21:37:04.959572 115901 | [Game] The user 0 appears to have a bad pack container id 7fffffffffffffff |
E 2024.09.17 21:37:10.716754 116028 | [Game] The user 0 appears to have a bad pack container id 7fffffffffffffff |
That seemed weird to me. Wondering if there was corruption in the game files. I do know the file system used within the game files can fragment with updates and changes, and sometimes you need to remove and clean install the game files every so often.
This could also indicate something with memory, in that its causing some small hiccups.
You had some disconnects after teleport, I saw that too. Most of those are caused by the system taking too long to process the teleport. We only know this, because players that were trying to run the game from a mechanical HDD would see this a lot more, and once they changed to an SSD it would stop. But it would also indicate a performance hit that would cause the process of the teleport to take too long, and then it gets disconnected.
The game having an issue with the internet would also cause this to occur. This may be outside of the quality of the internet. What I mean is, something about the internet connection it doesn’t like. Often the ones with the worst problems have some of the fastest internet, which makes it all the more confounding.
I don’t review the fenris files enough, I need to spend time going over mine and comparing it to these. But thanks for posting them.
Are you running OneDrive and is it sync’ing your game files at all?
And yes from above what DTMAce mentioned… there seems to be something off with either memory access to the game or a sync/timing issue with server communication.
Yes, I am running OneDrive, there is a D4 directory holding a localprefs.txt file and a hotfix sub-directory that are synced
The program D4 directory is not synced in OneDrive.
How about this Mr Nitro know it all. Whenever I portal into a dungeon, hordes, tree my game just freezes. No warning, no error, no fenris, nothing. Just locks up. This is the ONLY game this happens on and frankly I am getting really sick of having to kill the application in task manager to be able to play.
How about starting your own post instead of hijacking a post about Fenris logs?
Also, maybe you list some PC specs + driver versions of your GPU and any other helpful information in said post as well?
Dartharry, you could do a WinMTR and look over the results yourself to see if you notice any abnormal ping spiking or packet loss to the Blizz IP below.
If you’d like to blank out / omit / delete the top 2 or 3 hops to not share your personal IP info and post the results back here in a pastebin that works too.
WinMTR to IP = 95.100.133.81
I am sorry but I do not know what to look at there
Nore do I know what to pastebin ?
My Laptop is running on an integrated GPU Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics the compatibility of which with D4 was unclear.
When I started playing in february 2024, I had a warning message on start about that it was not fully compatible, saying game experience may not be at best. Yet , everything worked fine.
Then there was a D4 patch in may 2024. One thing I remember after this patch is that the warning message had disappeared. I was happy as I thought that D4 was now fully compatible.
Then freezes, crashes and disconnects started and since then it has been a nightmare.
I wonder if this is related.
If that was the GPU it had, I’m surprised it ran at all. That is a CPU integrated GPU if that’s true. Unless that laptop also had a dedicated GPU as well. Most modern laptops use two GPUs: One on the processor that uses a lot less power and one that is dedicated for things like gaming.
Typically you would see this with either Intel or AMD based systems, and you would have both. Though the AMD CPU systems often integrated an AMD GPU along side the CPU and then maybe a dedicated GPU, whereas the Intel CPUs had an Intel based GPU in the CPU, and would then have potentially either an AMD or nVidia dedicated GPU on the board as well.
I would check to see that the game is using the correct GPU, if your laptop has two. Otherwise, you will need upgrade the laptop to a newer one with a dedicated GPU built in.
The Intel Xe graphics while having some baseline capabilities aren’t designed to run a game like Diablo IV.
If it was only one Fenris issue Ok. There were 7 the last time I looked. So it not one particular thing. Way back I tried all the fixes like forcing the gpu to dedicated or whatever it was. Again, no answer as to why for 2 weeks I played PERFECTLY fine with no issues and then patches and updates changed all that. Same thing happened to people this season and last. What I suddenly need a new computer? I need to tweak my settings? Didn’t have to at season’s start, so why NOW??? Again no answers. What, my computer just decided to no work properly anymore??? Fenris didn’t even show up until I started posting. I just crashed with no error message. But again, now every crash is Fenris. I should not have to “fix” my computer to play a game I was playing perfectly fine with for 2 weeks and now can’t do that anymore. SORRY but yes it is Blizzard. Until you give me a good reason to explain this “phenomenon” no issues and then updates and patches altered my experience, then you are WRONG!!! And on top of that how do you explain last season’s issue involving Nvidia??? There was a problem there but did not affect EVERYONE but there were enough people affected that they posted a message on their login screen describing what was going on and that they were working on it. Not EVERYONE has to be affected for it to be a Blizzard issue. I guess you must work for Blizzard or own stock. I don’t know why you defend them so vehemently. Don’t really care. You have now credibility until you explain to my satisfaction how I can play for 2 weeks with no issues and then after updates and patches everything changes for the worse (and I am not the only reporting this, but hey I guess all us guys posting have bum computers).
Believe it or not, this is a possibility. Sometimes computers can just go bad like that.
Actually there is no way for us to verify that unless:
- We could actually work on said computer directly and provide our own findings
- Blizzard were to admit they screwed up
Ha, no. And I don’t defend them. I have stated more times than I can remember that I’m not happy with how the game plays, or how touchy it is. But that aside, more often than not, the problem ends up being something LOCAL. Either with the computer (or how its configured), the router (sometimes even the ISP), or something under the user’s sphere of control.
Anyway. I get that you are upset and don’t want to believe in any possibility other than what you think it is, but you have a higher chance of it being something you can change, then it being something Blizzard can fix for you.
*shrug
Good luck.
I wouldn’t even bother with answering ANY post from this guy at this point.
I’ll personally be adding pb86ed to my “ignore all” posts option on the forum.
- He/She has yet to provide any technical details of their computer (cpu, gpu, drivers, etc…)
- ^^ has yet to provide a Fenris debug crash text file to troubleshoot the issues
- ^^ has made multiple posts about the same thing and just argues unreasonably
I appreciate your input. Nitro Methane was who I was directing my reply. I don’t understand why he won’t (probably because he can’t) explain my playing for 2 weeks crash free and then after patches and updates start crashing all the time??? And I am not the only reporting this – last season also had the same thing reported after updates and patches. Again why Fenris now??? Two weeks nothing and now Fenris all the time? What causes it??? What is Fenris and why does it have a name? I have tried all the fixes from when Fenris first was a real problem in season 1 or 2. Last season I had the Nvidia issue and couldn’t play until it got fixed. Don’t remember having any or very many Fenris issues. So why now all of a sudden??? I have a top of the line computer made last year with all the latest and best hardware. I have an i3900k 13th gen processor. Nvidia RTX 4090. Everything is the best available when made last spring. As I have mentioned my wife has the exact same system. She was crashing at the start of the season (no Fenris) real bad. Then the updates and patches seemed fix hers and mess mine up. Yesterday I think she had what we can remember was her first Fenris crash. Just tried a reinstall a while ago and have had 3 Fenris crashes in a half hour. I have googled and tried most if not all the Fenris “fixes”. I guess I will just have to ask Blizzard to refund my money and prepurchase of the expansion since their game is unplayable (right, I know, good luck with this :D). Anyways thanks for your input. Really wish someone can explain what I keep asking an answer for – namely how a game goes from having no issues for 2 solid weeks to start crashing all the time after updates and patches.
Because there really isn’t any answer that will make sense.
Ok but how does it make it my problem and not Blizzard’s??? If this was happening from day one ok I need to try “experimenting” with some “fixes”. And again this is happening to others this season and at least last season too. Something in Blizzard’s patches and updates are messing with my computer. Why is it so hard to admit??? I guess it’s too easy to say it’s my problem and deal with it. They got my money. What do they care anymore?
Why?
Law of averages really.
If most of the playerbase is working fine outside of those having issues and telling us about them, then it can’t be solely one factor, AKA only Blizzard’s fault.
If it were, EVERYONE would have the problem.
I certainly don’t have any issues that approach the magnitude of what some of you are having. And I have even proved it time and again with video evidence, not that I should need to.
From your seat you feel its the opposite way. In that most have problems and only a few don’t.
Well, hate to be the one to break it to you, but that’s just not how it is.
And considering I have had not one, not two, but 3 threads today alone that were solved by fixing issues they had locally, I would say its highly more likely to be a problem you could fix if you wanted to.
But I get it.
You don’t want to consider that as an option because it makes no sense to you, and that’s perfectly fine.
The only other people that seem to be listening here on the actual game forums are other users like myself.
I haven’t seen a blue post in the forums in a long time:
February 5th of this year:
That is the last blue post in this forum.
Ok so how do I fix my problem. I have tried a lot of the fixes before. And why do I have to do something locally after the first 2 weeks were perfectly fine??? SOMETHING CHANGED!!! And the only that changed were updates and patches. My computer did not change. So something with Blizzard has caused something to change locally in my computer that I have to try and diagnose and repair. Just the way it should be :D. And I have also gone to Blizzard’s technical support page for crashing – absolutely nothing there for Fenris.
