Between the random crashing and extreme rubber-banding i cant get any progression. Pits, NMD it almost always crashes once you have spent the pit mats or sigils required. Those you do not get back and the game will constantly display reconnecting in the corner. After the campfire chat, it is clear that stability is a major concern even at Blizzard. But, in the meantime i can see player base departing more and more.
Mine started the 22nd of Sept - I took a month off, it hasnât been too bad since I started playing againâŚexcet it usaually takes 3 - 5 startts to get the game going.
Tonight, I crashed 16 times always (like before:):
Crashes - same as before:
UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: ACCESS_VIOLATION (c0000005) at:

DBG-ADDR<00007FF754786476>(âDiablo IV.exeâ)
Iâm crashing at the Blizzard Entertainment screen (poetic justice there). the Vessels of Hatred screen and walking in town. I went through all the t-shooting when the crashes started in Sept (95% of the way through last season - and it was so bad when Vessel of Hatred came out I had to quit - could not play at all).
I made it to town twiceâŚ
Blizzard has our money - they donât seem to be in a hurry to fix this.
Same, happens since 2.0 mostly after playing about 2 hours and doing dungeons. Seems more like a memory leak to me. Only happens with D4. No other game has this issue.
i3 - 12100 & 3050 RTX, all drivers up to date.
More like a memory limit.
This game uses a lot but it does stop using once it has enough.
Problem for you might be two-fold:
- Driver version. You stated you are using the latest, however it is a known potential issue the latest drivers cause a problem in many cases. The best version for stability is still 561.09 for your RTX 3050. You can revert back to that one of two recommended ways:
First, download the 561.09 for your card here:
Desktop: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/232538/
Laptop: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/232539/
Then you can either uninstall the current driver using the add/remove program option (recommended by nVidia) or use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) available here:
https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/Download-Display-Driver-Uninstaller-DDU-18087
READ AND FOLLOW the directions on their website on how to use the tool correctly, but it will yield the best results.
Do not use RollBack. This is not recommended by nVidia as it can cause driver issues in some cases.
- Memory. You have two things to worry about. Not having enough physical memory, and not having enough virtual memory. This game EATS memory, but it does eventually stabilize, if you have enough of both of the above.
In many cases, setting a static swap file (paging file) for your virtual memory helps a ton. In your case, I donât know how much physical memory you have, but you may want to set a swap file of either 24GB or 32GB if you have enough space to support this on your C: drive. (Or the fastest drive)
You can follow directions for that here:
-Diablo IV has run out of memory - #103 by DTMAce-1687
But use the value of 24576 (24GB) or 32768 (32GB) for the swap file settings. Make sure to set both Min and Max to the SAME value. Only use ONE drive.
Wait is that all it is, a memory issue? Currently have 32gb ram but should we be running more? I am now nearing a 100 crashes since I got into the game again last week. 3070, 5800x, 32gb (more?) [xmp enabled], 3 nvme drives. I have room for two more sticks of 16gb ram and could up the pagefile too if need be. Are the specs for this game that steep now though? Just must find a way to stop all the crashing.
No, its not directly memory, but the game does eat a lot of it.
I run a 4080 Super and have 32GB of memory. I also have a 32GB Swap file setup, which gives me 64GB of virtual memory space (32 physical + 32 swap for Committed memory in Task Manager)
But it rarely uses more than half of that virtual memory, even after a couple hours. But I will admit, I havenât logged in to play in about a week, been busy doing life stuff. I will get time to play again this holiday though and will see if anything has changed since the last time I played.
But so far, I havenât had any of these issues. Running Windows 11 23H2 still, frankly Iâm surprised the Desktop hasnât forced the update yet. But Iâm also running on a much older driver than most of you. It was the release driver for the 4080 Super when it launched at the end of January, 551.31 and was only written for that card. Diablo IV doesnât like it either (has a red text out of date driver warning in the game settings page) but it keeps working fine. *shrug
Thanks, unfortunately it didnât work, tried the paging file with both values (I have 32 GB of ram), tried the old drivers as well as the newest ones, and the game keeps crashing since 2.0, never before this has happened.
Can you provide a copy of your most recent crash FenrisDebug file?
You can use pastebin.com to share it.
3 weeks ago I decided to do my annual full pc cleanup (meaning: doing a format and a full clean install). Before I was on win 10, I went with win 11 for the new install.
Never had any issue on Win 10 (7800X3D, 4070TI)
After the win 11 install I had crashes everytime, tried all the things I read there to fix it, nothing worked!
Since win 11 was not running smooth during allround pc usage (allthough my system is not slow!) I decided to go back to win 10. And guess what⌠Since Iâm back on 10, I had ZERO crashes in D4. (latest nvidia drivers installed, ingame setting all maxed, DLSS on, raytracing on, ect ect)
So I just started playing again and while this game has always crashed on and off for me, generally with any new release, it was pretty aggressive this time. System would lock up after having it open for about 5 minutes (same gpu/cpu as original poster but with 16gb of DDR5 instead of 32). For giggles when I saw it capping my memory as it usually does, I went in and changed my page file to be larger (1.5x the amount of RAM installed). That seemed to help quite a bit, Iâve left the game open and running for about 15 minutes and nothing so far. Going to leave it up for awhile to see if it eventually crashes.
This is on Win11
Update: 45 minutes in and I hit my first crash while tabbed out, same temporary lockup. Adding vram helps the issue but doesnât solve it. Definitely seems like itâs memory related in my case.
I would set your paging to 32768 for both min and max. Make sure your paging file is on a SINGLE drive (not spread across drives), and hopefully the fastest drive you have.
Make sure the drive isnât nearly full. A full drive causes performance issues with this game too. I usually tell people to always keep your drive no fuller than 66%. Especially an SSD.
See if that fixes it enough. This game is very memory intensive. 16GB of physical memory just isnât enough to be honest anymore. And the more memory the GPU has, the worse this is.
If you donât need the high-res packs, I suggest removing them. They were designed for 4K gaming and are still useful on a 1440p display, but 1080p or less they arenât needed really. And would also help this situation.
Just bumping this post as I have had 5+ crashes in the last 4 hours. I appreciate DTMAce for providing potential fixes but these memory leaks shouldnât be an issue years into this game when literally every other recent graphic intensive game I own works 100% on Ultra/Max settings and doesnât crash. I feel like Iâm getting punished for buying the game on sale.
Edit: Posting my specs
MOBO: Asus X870E-E ROG Strix Gaming
CPU: AMD 9800x3d / Cooler: arctic liquid freezer iii 360
RAM: 32gb gskill flare x5 DDR5-6000 / PC5-48000 / CL32
SSD: Samsung 990 PRO 2TB
GPU: Nvidia Asus TUF 3080ti 12gb
OS: Windows 10
For the umpteenth time, they arenât leaks.
But the game does eat a crap-ton of memory. I have played the game for hours at a stretch while monitoring the memory usage. It does flatten out eventually, but it can use a LOT of memory, physical, virtual, and GPU memory.
I still stick by the recommendation of having at least 32GB of memory, and with a GPU card that has 16GB or more of memory, setting the swap file to a fixed size of 32768 (32GB).
That all said.
There can be other factors that will screw up the game:
- Issues with the memory itself, if its overclocked (even with XMP) or has a weak module
- Issues with the GPU (overclocked, overheating, power delivery issues, etc)
- Issues with the CPU (overclocked, overheating, power, etc)
And it doesnât take much, as this game is particularly sensitive to⌠well⌠everything.
And I agree, this game should NOT require so much tweaking, configuring, and adjustments to fix it.
Another few things that cause some of these issues:
- Driver version - 561.09 is recommended, geforce experience is NOT recommended.
- Direct Storage - Disabling this helps in some cases.
- WiFi connections can cause hiccups or disruption.
So many potential things, that this game is touchy about. So yeah, its the gameâs fault for being so sensitive, but it can be worked around.
Based on my personal experience with the game, I could probably fix 99% of you having issues if I had hands on the system myself. But I donât. And thanks to Blizzard, we have these issues all the time and many of you are suffering as a result.
We shouldnât have to be doing all these things. This is the kind of stuff you do to min/max the game performance! Not just to get it to run!
Game on.
I gotta say this is the odd part. Unless it has something to do with Nahantu, I played with my girlfriend doing the original campaign setting for at least 3 hours straight and not a single issue. Now with me solo exploring Nahantu and the new dungeons its just been terrible.
You are not the first to state this.
I have heard this a few times already as well. Normal campaign plays fine, but the expansion portion seems to show problems.
I donât really have an answer for this issue directly, outside of some of the adjustments I have already mentioned previously.
Best suggestions I will offer with this expansion that have helped the most people are two things:
- Running an nvidia driver version 561.09
- Setting a fixed swap file (paging file) for windows at a size of 32GB (32768) for the Min and Max under the paging custom options.
I have these posted in various places, including this very thread.
Still crashing⌠A056A37E-5CD3-4889-AB34-32ACEB0187DD
Happens randomly every 1,5 hours or so.
Win11 Pro, 13700K, 2080Ti, 64GB DDR5, running from m.2 ssd
Finally my game is âstableâ I could play for more than 1 and half hour, and it is still running while I write this, as said before the crash happened after playing for more than 90 minutes. Tried most solutions here but what worked for me was:
- Uninstall all Nvidia drivers and extra things (Control Panel, HD Audio Driver, physx) Also I donât use GeForce App, I only install the driver.
- Installed a clean installation of the driver 561.09, with the option for a clean installation as well the HD Audio Driver and Physx.
- After the game launched I set the fps limit to 60 (My monitor supports 165 hz)
After starting playing the game lags a lot and stutter a lot, but after a few minutes killing mobs and dealing with the stuttering (Sorry HC people) the game keeps running fine. Also this never happened before 2.0 but at least I can play without worrying about a random crash for now.
So essentially, the stuttering never seems to stop?
Sounds like a lot of what you changed helped though. I would make sure that the Direct Storage is disabled for one as it can cause that effect, but you can check the following to work with your 3050 in the game settings as well:
- Distortion - Disable this
- Chromatic Aberration - And this
- All Ray Tracing features - Disable all of this
- Click the box marked âLow FXâ
- Set your graphics at âHighâ to start at this point (not ray tracing high)
- You already have the FPS capped to 60
- DLSS - Try Balanced first, if that doesnât help, then go to Performance
See how that plays. If not, drop the Graphics to Medium.
I have played with these settings (Default High settings, no ray tracing, 165 fps) since Season 3 without problems, the stuttering only happens like for 3 to 5 minutes after starting playing after that I can play normally without problems. It might not be that problem I just take a walk around the town after the game stabilizes but the problems mightâve happened after a patch from the last weeks, I remember playing the VoH campaign without any problem and I took me around 3 weeks to complete without any problems I even played with my Eternal character for a while, all my problems started when I decided to go for a Season Character but that was a few days ago.
No worries. I was just going by the card you are running and what might work best with it. Its the same as my laptop, or at least the same generation.
Laptop GPUs tend to run at a lower power less performance than a desktop version.
