Random Crashing with 2.0 - Never Happened Before Update

Description:

Since the 2.0 update for Diablo 4, I have been experiencing frequent, random crashes to the desktop. Each time this occurs, I submit the crash report through the automatic pop-up, but I have not yet captured the crash/error number. These crashes have become a persistent issue, and I would like to provide as much information as possible to assist in resolving it.

Details:

  • Issue Frequency: Crashes occur at random intervals with no specific action or pattern triggering the issue. It happens during various in-game activities—sometimes during combat, after teleporting, or even while simply traversing the world.

  • System Information:

    • Processor: Intel 13900K
    • RAM: 32GB DDR5 @7200 MHz
    • Motherboard: ASRock Taichi Z790
    • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4090
    • Cooling: Custom multi-radiator liquid cooling loop (system temperatures are stable, ruling out overheating)

My system is fully capable of running Diablo 4 on Ultra settings, though I have dialed back some settings as a precaution. Despite this, the issue persists.

  • Game Version: 2.0 release (same issue was present during PTR)

  • Crash Occurrences: Random, not tied to any specific in-game action (combat, teleporting, or running in the open world).

  • Pre-Update Stability: Prior to the 2.0 update, I had no crashes or instability issues with Diablo 4 on the same hardware and configuration.

  • Previous Troubleshooting: Through my own research, I’ve found that other users are experiencing similar crashes, suggesting a potential instability within the 2.0 build itself.

Additional Information:

If required, I can provide detailed system information such as a DXDiag report or other diagnostic data. I will also capture and post the crash/error number the next time the issue occurs. Please let me know if any further information or logs are needed to assist with troubleshooting.

Request:

I would appreciate any guidance or potential fixes you may have to resolve this issue. Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to your response.

Same issue, have tried rolling back on Nvidia drivers, month by month, they all crash or too old of an update .
I have GeForce 3080
No other games crash ( Diablo immortal , destiny , apex legends ) etc….
Is a diablo 4 only issue

The exact same things keeps happening to me. there’s no visual issues or anything. game just crashes.

This is clearly a dev issue. My PC has a 14900k, 4070Ti Super, 64GB Ram, 4TB Nmve, and is only 2 months old with everything up to date. This is the only game crashing in this specific manner.

Was just in the final fight of the DLC and it crashed. I literally have to run ALL the way back now. You guys really didn’t think things through for checkpoint saves.

This is a game bug… possibly a memory leak?

…observations thus far:

E 2024.10.09 19:17:18.297689 357773	[Crash] Thread 'RenderThread' handling fatal error
E 2024.10.09 19:17:18.298818 357773	[Crash] UnhandledExceptionFilter

every time I change zone (teleporting around the map) the memory usage of the game in task manager increases (nothing special) but it also renders in the portal pad visual increasingly slower the more memory is used.
At some point (in my system with 64GB ram) it starts crashing after filling up to 15GB usage (at game launch it’s around 8)

Very same issue here. Never had a crash before Vessel of Hatred. Since addon start yesterday until today I had about 5-6 crashes. Even once on character selection menu

AMD 5800x
Nvidia 4080 (latest available driver 565.90)
32GB Ram
Windows 10 22H2

Also having random crashes, usually in combat but happened at least twice while afk:

7800x3d
4090 565.90 (Also tried rolling back)
32GB Ram
Win 11 23H2

I’ve tried turning off raytracing, lowering settings, increasing page file size and making it static, etc…

32gb ram@3600, 16C

Settings are all set to max with shadows set to mid and AA to low.

Over 12 BSOD in less than 8 hours of gameplay.
Over 10 errors about corrupted files found which then lead to another BSOD.
Over 5 errors about ram usage issue.
Over 5 simple crashes.

Again. In less than 8 hours of gameplay. Averages on 1 crash per, what, 5 minutes?

Fix your damn mess and throw some information around. Random patches calling performance improvements when nothing is improved helps only you people justify your salary. Yeah, i am absolutely frustrated right now.

I’m having the same issues with very similar PC Specs. I noticed it happened more often after I stepped away for a minute or two and character went idle and then I came back moved around for a few seconds and crashed.

It has also happened in the middle of a few quests both side and MSQ. Specifically, the tablet quest I had to repeat it and start from the beginning at least 3 times.

Yep. Me too. It’s constantly crashing for no apparent reason…

yeah I had to redo the tablet one once or twice. I was doing the final fight and it crashed, had to run ALL THE WAY BACK through the parted river section and back through the tomb to continue the fight.

EDIT: Just crashed on me again for no reason.

I’m having a middle point of a crash. It ‘Crashes’ I guess, but still tries to load in. Its really really weird. I’m only adding this here instead of a new thread because its triggered by the same actions. Teleporting after a period of time or after several teleports (waypoint or not) causes this.

AMD drivers are up to date, and all that jazz. Doing a scan and fix now just in case its due to a corrupt file caused by something going wrong in update.

Pre-post edit. Scan and fix found nothing wrong. Only Diablo 4 is crashing in this strange way. All my other games do not encounter this issue and D4 was NOT having this issue pre-expansion. Windows 10 (Because no thanks Windows 11 forced updates, No trust after a 10 update bricked PCs) Both CPU and GPU meet/exceed recommended specs, 32 GBs of Ram, and decent HDD thats not old enough to have issues with read write. Just to cover that information.

Since I can’t link the gyazo screenshot I have of the weird fail to load/psuedo-crash I’ll just describe it:

  1. HP and Vigor doesn’t display or even load the value.
  2. Skills do load in on the skill bar along with XP bar, proper values.
  3. Merc’s images and XP bars are pink.
  4. Mini-Map is blacked out like its in an inaccessible area (like out of bounds)
  5. Completely black screen, no textures and Models load, or sounds outside of BGM plays.
  6. Still displays as being in my previous location above the mini-map, but is playing BGM of teleport destination.
  7. Restarting game ‘Fixes’ this issue… temporally. This only seems to occur when the game freezes while loading for a brief second then ‘quickly’ loads. Its as if the freeze is causing the game to skip asset loading.

Absolutely a memory leak. I’ve had two crashes that said ‘out of memory’ and three others that allowed me to restart my PC. It always seems to happen when I’m teleporting OUT of a dungeon, it’s gotten to the point where I will run all the way back to the dungeon entrance and exit that way- so far I’ve not crashed doing it that way. But any time I teleport out… CRASH. It sucks.
