Game freezes for long periods when opening menus and performing certain actions

Just try this and see:

Battle.net game client → settings → app → advanced features and UNCHECK “use browser hardware acceleration”

Curious to see how it affects the rest of you. Fixed my issue with rubberbanging/latency/stuttering so far with over an hour in game now.

Best performance option though, have the launcher EXIT when starting a game. Will accomplish the same thing.

And no, its not fixing the problem for everyone, just so you know.

Game on.

I can also confirm that uninstalling High res Pack did not solve the problem for me either.
Turning off “browser hardware acceleration” only makes sense if your battle net app is open otherwise you can close it.

Tweaking Nvidia Settings for best performance also makes no changes to freezing and stuttering. Running 150 Fps on High Settings with a sudden drop to 24 or less. Teleporting to town, opening inventory, paragons or skills, vendors or the worst when you travel from one location to another on horse or foot cause a mini freeze for 2 sec or more. After reading all these comments looks like this is not a PC issue it must be down to the game engine.

Intel Core i5-11400H
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop (GA107M) [ASUS]
Memory DDR4 SDRAM 32GB Dual Channel
2xNvme Drive Model: INTEL SSDPEKNU512GZ

Give this test a try to see if it helps anything, I’m conducting an experiment:

I’m having the same issue. When I try to open my inventory, click on a lore item in the game or talk to a vendor my game freezes for a good minute or much more. Happened to me multiple times while playing on stream for the first time last night, lowkey ruined my experience.

I have a clip to show what I experience.

just bought the game as well, can’t even open the inventory without it freezing for 5min + never had any issues in the beta and I shouldn’t have to install an extra 40gb of texture crap for 4k when im playing on 1080p. hope they fix it soon, need to beat my GF in levels haha

This has been happening to me aswell on low settings everything is below 50% usage on my PC. so im not sure why my game does a tiny freeze every now and then.

Just adding two coins, same for me, the whole GPU memory gets used even on the lowest of low settings.

I had the pack installed from the getgo and those freezes are surely NOT related to it being present or not, but to GPU VRAM being overloaded , shaders being corrupted, and overall garbage optimization, plus network stack being flooded with packets by the BNET Server on certain conditions, even as far as terminating the IP Stack.

(shaders / textures: …on certain occasions when u open your inventory you can even see a pink placeholder texture flash for a brief moment on certain UI elements)

Once the game engine has reached a saturation point where it also does not properly clear cache and vram , the application will completely freeze the PC, when menus are acccessed or graphic settings are changed (not crash! ) it will operate but not respond to any input until a massive timeout period expires…or it wont come to life at all, the PC in that state is still operating background tasks …such as sound, browser video playing etc.) but interaction with the system is blocked by Diablo 4. A program that hooks itself in that massive way into the system CLEARLY has issues with clean procedures concerning OS utilization.

What good is a steady 100 fps on ultra if the game requires the user to constantly fiddle with it to maintain stability or outright gets stuck in the game for minutes. Lowering texture and Shadow quality just postpones the inevitable overflow.
If that aint a classic memory leak , i dont know what is.
Blizzard is NOT adressing this widespread reported issue at all… SILENCE ON ALL FRONTS.

And yet, it doesn’t affect the majority of players that are playing the game just fine.

It IS frustrating though. And the VRAM symptoms exist across all PCs, whether it cripples them or not.

i doubt that the majority of players is not having issues… and at this point of proliferation of the problem with 800+ posts its safe to assume that for every 1 user that posts about this problem theres at least 1000 who dont put in the effort.

People are far more likely to put in the effort complain about… Well… Anything.

When its working right, they are far less likely to say a word.

If they have sold millions of copies already, why aren’t we seeing millions of complainers?

You see my point?

Sure, not saying there isn’t an issue going on, that was not my intention. But from my perspective, and I have been playing on 3 different machines, NONE of them have been acting up at all. In fact, I haven’t even been ABLE to make them act up yet.

So it does beg the question. What is so different that some of you are crashing hard, not able to stay connected or otherwise having issues, when I’m clearly not.

And instead of me just happily ignoring those of you with issues and playing, I’m here in the tech trenches trying to help find a solution.

And some of those solutions I hate to say, have been with the hardware, not the game.

I don’t like how the game is using VRAM at all. There is an issue there, even though mine is currently working, I still see the same workload.

And I think there are issues with D4 traffic in some cases too. But I can’t pin that down either.

So I’m far from making the assumption that Blizzard is blameless, but I also have to say that there are going to be many instances here where the player with the problem may have an issue on their hardware not the game.

Anyway.

Things where fine before maintenance. How do you make something worse.

just because some people arent having issues doesnt mean its the players machines. Not everyone will experience the same problems, that doesnt mean it doesnt exist and isn’t Blizzard’s servers. When so many people can play so many different games and have no issues, just this one game causes them, the problem is pretty clear. Obviously that’s not 100% but if your machine has the recommended specs, and then some then it should run just fine, not the lag dcfest that has been happening since launch, especially when alot of those same players played the betas and server slam with 0 issues. Not everyone comes to the forums to complain, alot of people open tickets and wait for a response from the company themself so don’t base it off of not seeing people complain. They put out a game they knew had issues, they said it themselves at the campfire chat, that they hope D4 will become a well polished game, meaning its not currently and they know it. Every time a game comes out with issues like these people always get told it’s their machines or their isp or their settings, when give it time and the game comes out with an actual patch that fixes it and sure enough it wasn’t people’s machines or isp it was the game’s servers.

I think overall I have repeatedly acknowledged this.

But I also have encountered a few of you that THOUGHT it was Blizzard’s fault and found out otherwise. So both can be true.

Why is it that myself and many others have had NO issues playing the game for hours at a time?

Dumb luck?

I mean this argument can go both ways. I would love to get my hands on a machine that’s locking up and not able to play, so that I could get to the bottom of the problem. But since I have not been able to replicate/duplicate the issue, that has been not possible. I’m actually considering putting together another desktop (AMD system) and see if I can get THAT one to screw up. I have a fairly recent AMD that I could throw a 2070 in and see how it plays for a few hours.

Betting it would run fine though. Any takers?

Had the exact same issue. I play in a laptop so thought it was my problem. Thanks for the post, I think I´ll have to download the +40GB just to avoid restarting the game when I need to see my inventory…

In my case the freezes were really scarce, like once per 30 hours of playing, before one of the patches (the last one?). Now it happens once in an hour or more frequently. It’s very hard to believe it’s something with my hw, I haven’t seen the problem in any other game.

PS it’s really sad there isn’t a single blue post here.

I’m on a 2 year old PS5 here and I’m having the same issues. Where the hell is Blizzard on this!?

honestly yeah dumb luck. There are some areas that I can almost guarantee I will dc every single time I got here, then theres the dcing that we experience that we aren’t expecting. I do agree that not every single person that has experienced this is because of Blizzard but it can’t be none either. It honestly confuses me that I can run things fine during server slam but starting in early access I start getting alot of lag and dcing and its only gotten worse. Apologies if my comments came off like I am attacking you personally, I get frustrated when people that aren’t experiencing the issues that myself and plenty of others are getting try to make it seem like them having no issues means it has to be our hardware. I would love it if my issues are something I can fix, so far I have tried every fix in the forums that I have seen, short of the vpn as I don’t have one atm, and nothing has worked. My husband can’t play at all as every time he tries to leave a city he dces.

Having similar issues, i am not a tech guy, so take this for what it is worth.
My problems may come back.
Today i turned off NVidia low latency plus boost.
and set dlss to performance.
so far so good can open menus and teleport with no excessive freezing or crashing.
Touching wood it stays that way.
good luck.
