I am having the same issue since Sunday around 3 p.m. mst - only while playing diablo 4 does my modem disconnect and reconnect entirely. I’ve made sure everything is updated - allowed through the firewall correctly, turned off cross play options, and still I get between 5 minutes and 45 minutes of play before my modem drops signal again. Does not happen in wow retail or classic. I’ve done the power cycling of everything obviously and reseated all cables(swapped ethernet ports and am reinstalling d4 now in the hopes something gives). Monitoring my task manager and network monitor pages d4 does seem to be pushing a much larger amount of traffic than wow does…(I have a 1gig cable package and consistently sit 850m down 120m up)
Hey there everyone,
So let me first say its not really that crazy a concept but typically what is happening here is there is a flaw in the local network usually the router or modem where if it gets flooded with data, it gets overwhelmed and just “dies”
The hardware is getting overwhelmed. Now whether or not a specific game is actively using the network when it happens is secondary, the flaw is within the network device itself. The game just happens to be doing something (normal or abnormal) to trip it. Even if Diablo IV has something going on with its data transfers, the hardware “should” be able to handle/throttle it and keep everything running network wise.
There are a few things I can recommend that should help but it won’t solve any hardware level issue directly. So if that is the case, the only solution would be to replace the device that is dropping the connection.
First. Firmware. There are a bunch of modems out there that have a specific chipset prone to this exact sort of issue. The issue happened for years and was a pretty big deal. Intel released a firmware update to patch the issue and most ISPs have long since pushed it to the modem but it is possible you may not have it. So check for any firmware updates and apply them.
From there another easy step is to simply power everything down for about 30 minutes or so (unplugging from power) and then power it all back up. Should clean up any bad cached network data and ISP managed device settings.
Outside of that, you can try doing a factory reset of the device. (If you do not own the device or do not have proper admin access to do this, work with your ISP to do so. They may even be able to do it remotely for you and ensure everything gets set back up.
Hopefully that helps get everything working for you. Because the next step would be to change out the affected router/modem.
I’ve updated the firmware on the router and nothing changed. Other than that, I discovered that you can recover the “freeze” if you toggle uPNP off/on in the router settings when it happens, but it’s not a solution - only a way or preventing the need to leave the game and lose progress…
I have been experiencing this same problem since the early release launch. I am a Spectrum customer and rent my modem (E31N2V1) and router (SAX1V1S) from them. I have already been forced to replace my modem once (after Spectrum tech support confirmed that my router was not at fault), and I am unhappy to report that a new one did not solve the issue. The new modem is the same model as the previous one, and I was told that it’s the only model I’m eligible to receive.
For those who suggest various tweaks or updating the firmware of the devices in question, please bear in mind that those of us who rent equipment from our ISP are in no position to do that because the hardware is locked. We rely on the ISP to maintain the functionality of the equipment they give us, and if that equipment works fine when we’re NOT playing Diablo IV, you can rest assured that the ISP will point the finger at the game and tell us to consult Blizzard for a solution.
I am on spectrum modem #3 (which has now died and need to be exchanged for #4). Once it initially crashes, even after being rebooted with power off for an extended time, Spectrum could see it disconnecting at least 3 times overnight (overnight meaning not in active use). Then it stops connecting at all. I tried the suggestion to power it off for 30 minutes and try again, it still won’t connect.
It’s permanently damaging the spectrum modems, and our only recourse is to keep exchanging them for working devices. So far we’ve been destroying a new modem within 12 hours. We have a tech appointment scheduled but it’s several days out.
Is there anything else the end user can do? As tedious as it is to randomly lose internet for 30min rebooting, that’s not sustainable if it’s permanently damaged and gets to a point where it never reconnects and has to be replaced.
We’re on to our 4th modem since Sunday.
Same here, I’m playing from Italy and keep disconnecting and CTD very inconsistently since launch, sometimes every 3-5 min, some others I’m able to play for like 30 min with no issues, but then the network issues inevitably come. I hadn’t have a single play session where I didn’t get disconnected.
Every time I get disconnected my entire home network crash for 20-30 sec, the first 1-2 times I’m able to stay in game but in the end I always CTD (very rarely I end up in the main menu).
I’ve tried several troubleshooting options:
- Updating all possible drivers (Network adapter included)
- Updating Windows time sync
- Releasing and renewing the ip and flushing the dns
- Deactivating the Firewall
- Activating/deactivating uPNP
- Resetting the network via Windows
- Restarting and resetting the connection via modem and the modem itself
Interestingly, I found out that if I’m playing while connected to a vpn (NordVPN to an Italian server) I completely avoid any CTD and my home network no longer crash, the connection issues in game still persist, but don’t have any other effects outside the game.
This very same issue began for me on Monday.
I played both beta’s, the server slam, and early access, and never had any issues until Monday.
The odd thing for me, is it’s only disconnecting devices in the same room.
I’ve tried disconnecting everything except for the two devices I use (laptop to stream, and gaming PC) and it kills the internet on both.
Every other device in my household will still work, so it seems isolated to my room, I really hope there is some form of fix soon.
Its ridiculous that Blizzard say "your Router is the Problem " i play houndreds of Games and never had this Problem before… Fix this Bug for People who pay 70-100 Euro we are your customers. Problem is still there between 5 Min to 1 Hour disconnect
Tried all recommendations above.
It’s actually insane that we pay €70+ just for the game not to work.
This has never happend in any other AAA game that i have played.
Blizzard, please fix
Since the Game is out i have the Problem too.
In Beta, i played for several Hours - no Problem. And for the rest of the week i had also no issues, since i went back on an older driver with deactivating EEE and so on… (there is a common Problem that should be fixed with an actual driver … (I225-V 2,5 GB Adapter on 1 GB FullDuplex Connection)
Before the Server-Slam i hat an “old” PC, Using the 1 GB LAN Port with no issues, several Hours of Gaming, also with the new PC on Server Slam - …but maybe its a bit difficult to say, since i had no issues since monday or sunday, as i switched my driver.
What can i say … Windows tells me that i have no internet Connection. Checking the Connection from my IPhone - i have internet. Checking Router (FritzBox 7590, acutal Firmare) - no issues.
i tried to ping my router - nothing. My Computer is conneted through two switches to my Router. i restarted them both just in case i might have an issue
When the Problem occurs, my switches tell me there is a Link.
Reboot / turning off the whole Power of anything PC related, Power up again - works
Disconnect one Cable from my switch and reconnect it - doesnt work
Using Windows Diagnosis which resets the Connection - works fine.
I tried IPConfig /renew - doesnt work, since the Gateway can’t be reached, but works instantly as soon as the Connection was resetted.
Maybe we can get some Information here…
Which Network Adapter is it that crashes on you - and is everything else in Network really crashing too?
For me, its only my PC that can’t esablish a connection any more…
Will Update my driver now since an older driver isn’t solving the Problem - a newer FirmWare of my Board will affect only the Problem with the latest AMD X3D Topic, nothing related to the Network adapter…
I will have to try ,if it happens on other games that need internet… im not absolutely sure if this is diablo relevant…might be a thing of my new selfbuild pc, but its a bit confusing while this happens only in diablo and not every day as it seems…
Same for me. Did played beta and server slam and the early access without any problems. On monday it began for me too to crash my whole internet. I guess it’s a problem with the crossplay function but have to test more.
I disabled all of the crossplay functions with no improvement, still get 45 mins to as little as 2-3 minutes before my home network crashes only while in diablo 4 - i’ve done the 30 minute power downs, swapping ports, reinstalling, updating firmware, trying all the the document adjustments that have been recommended in different threads - it is diablo causing the issue I can still play wow for hours on end while my husband plays his xbox and we both stream tv on different devices with no issues - until I try to play this 90.00 game I paid this company for.
I have done everything you suggested and frankly im getting tired of these disconnect and log in issues. Im on a series x and in the 3 betas i played well over hundred hours and didnt disconnect like this. This isnt our issue its somthing on blizzards end or game related.
I suspect it is an issue with your router or router settings it’s exposing. I’ve had no isuues with mine when playing diablo4 with lots of other devices also connected to the router.
Have a look in your router admin console at event logs see if you can see how the router is crashing.
Who is your ISP?
I very much doubt this, how do you think a game could crash a properly functioning WiFi router have you tried talking to tech support at your ISP.
Totally illrealvent… just because its working for you means squat.
I have 104 hour played time since early access and this disconnect issue only just now started. My settings didnt magically change. They changed something and its cuasing issues.
That sounds like a different issue not the router crashing but your network card driver crashing.
Btw my router isnt turning off or anything in fact im on party chat with friends on xbox live and ONLY Diablo 4 disconnects. Party chat is stable never losed connect nor does my router. This didnt happen till recently. It also not happening with other games its diablo 4 specific.
Reminds me of an issue we had years ago at work one of our CRM application servers would drop of the network every night.
We had so many calls about that the winter team instited the app must be doing something wrong and causing it.
I was pointing out that while the app might be triggering a fault on that VM in it’s normal operation all the other application servers with the same config weren’t dropping of an I suspected a fault somewhere in the NIC drivers or IP stack on that server.
We argued two and fro on this for weeks then I went on holiday when I got back it was resolved turned out that virtual machine had a different virtual NIC driver to all the others and there was a know issue when that driver was used with the exact version of VM ware we used on that account that would lead to IP stack overflows under certain conditions, and the apps normal activity triggered this issue after a time.
So while software can expose these fault its not normally the underlying cause.
Some of these issues could be certain ispers having issues leading to server disconnects in certain areas that just coincide with them playing D4 and not actually connected at all.
Checking router logs and settings is one thing to do if the routers crashing or dropping it’s connection to the provider.
If as some people are saying their connections are failing at the PC end check your network drivers are up to date and look in the windows event logs.
Have you checked your router logs for why it disconnects at the router level I mean.
