Dissconnect / Latency issue - Bandaid FIX

There are already a lot of threads about this, but I figured i’d include some information to see if we could find some kind of correlation. As like others, it happens a lot when moving to a new area, or coming across other players, or simply entering a dungeon. My situation happens 90% of the time right when I log into the game making it unplayable from the getgo. I usually have around 50ms, but once the issue occurs, it tends to spike to 900-1596 and then I start rubber banding/nothing is responsive.

I am playing from Southern California using Frontier FIOS as my ISP with a Eero 6 router. I’ve never had any issues like this from launch until mid-way into Season 1 where I stopped playing. I recently logged in yesterday before the season started and ran into this problem, but I shrugged it off thinking it would be a one-off thing.

I am leaning more towards some kind of network problem sending/receiving packets to the D4 server, but what do I know.

edit: I currently resolved the issue by using a latency tunnel. A VPN might work similarly. At least until blizzard figures what the problem is.

edit 2: Great news! Blizzard seems to have patched and fixed the problem altogether!

Same here, in Southern CA. Fios internet. PS5. Cannot stay in game longer than 5 mins. Trying to reinstall the game now, some have said that fixed their issuse.

Using a latency tunnel seemed to have fixed my issue entirely. Perhaps a VPN would work similarly.

tf is that? i only know a malignant tunnel

Hey, thanks for posting.

I have access to Spectrum and Frontier ISPs and I experienced the same issue on Frontier. Unplayable on Frontier; never made it more than a couple minutes without disconnect.

Just did a dungeon on Spectrum and it has been fine so far.

Hopefully devs can interface with Frontier and get this resolved… tbh I’m not willing to go through it myself.

I’m in SoCal and have Frontier. Never had a problem until the day before Season 2 launch. Don’t have issue on any other platform or launcher. It either works today or it gets replaced with something that does. SSD space is high value real estate thee days.

I had the same issue, turned off cross play and works perfect now

Tried that yesterday, no difference.

Did you disable all of the crossplay, including communication?

Yes, everything is off.

Well, then you might have an issue with routing causing latency and drops.

I have two ISPs here, Starlink and (ugh) Brightspeed.

The Starlink works great, its fast, but due to some slight tree obstruction, I have issues once in a while when gaming.

The Brightspeed is DSL that gives me a top speed of 8MB…

But its rock solid for gaming and the only thing I connect to it is the PC. There is nothing else using that internet, so I literally pay for a slower connection for the lower latency and solid connection of a wired network. lol

But I can play from the Starlink if I want to, and it will work fine 98% of the time.

I have also tested the game from my FirstNet(ATT) hotspot, and THAT will cause me issues far more often.

I have also tested from a Canadian cable company (Rogers) in Ottawa, that worked fine, but that was back in June.

However, I do know there are often issues with internet traffic. Though it has improved a bit over the past few months, there are still issues with routing and some ISPs and such. Sometimes it can be circumvented with a DNS server specified for your system, other times it can be fixed with a VPN setup, etc.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know with a 100% certainty what might be affecting a particular user, due to the nature of the internet and the knowledge most users have of how it works.

All they know is:

Place A works fine. Place B doesn’t. Place C works fine.

Everything else works fine. Every App, Launcher, Game, Device, everything. Ran scans and diagnostics through everything possible. All systems and files nominal. No memory leaks, no latency, no interference. Blizzard Servers and Frontier in SoCal are not getting along it seems but there’s not much I can do about that and with the back log that I have of games that I won’t/don’t need third party software work arounds for, and that this has been going on since Monday with no word or notion, I think I’m good with this particular Developer and what it continually demonstrates. I guess I’ve seen enough lol.

This supports what I have been theorizing all along for months.

Some ISPs don’t like D4 traffic or its signature. I think it gets de-prioritzed by some ISPs, causing it to have latency, drops and the like.

Now.

This could be a complete bone butt guess, but I think its a solid theory. And chances are, as ISPs are starting to add the signature of the traffic to their servers (as in allowing it normal priority) it should slowly stabilize.

I have noticed a decrease in the number of complaints of issues the past couple months, but that could also be attributed to the drop off in players or those that gave up rather than wait it out. Again, no data here to back that thought up either.

Anyway.

EXACT same thing happening to me in Santa Monica. Frontier Fios, game has been unplayable for the last 4-5 days. Never happened before and never happened in ANY other game. My internet connection has been stable and ultra fast for 5+ years with never any problems. Highly likely this is some D4 developer BS going on and not Frontier.

Actually, since it seems a lot of you playing from a Frontier connection are having problems, its way more likely to be some sort of issue between the ISP and the path to the server, than the servers themselves.

This is exactly my setup as well. And exact same issues.

Still happening this morning. Switching zones makes me need to relaunch the game every few mins… not fun…

So Cal, Frontier on Eero 6, as well.

Same situation as the several others in this thread. Seems like Frontier is not playing well with d4.

I can confirm on the VPN fix. Running Frontier Fios with VPN has stopped the insane ms latency and zoning problem with my S2 necro. Was actually able to finish a dungeon run and TP to a main hub without issue.

If I have to run a VPN in order to play this game and only this game then I guess this game can get retired and make room for something that isn’t as needy.
