Seasons in D3 have gear and rewards too… not just cosmetics. Although the highest goals for D3 are cosmetic only. It is free, but part of the Season (battlepass) Journey. I see them as very very similar.
Besides, what is there to do if not working on Seasons in D3? It is that or non season leaderboards I guess, unless someone is just enjoying some loot hunting or hunting rare cosmetic wings/
All of that is free with purchase of D3/Ros. I do not need to spend a cent more. So if battlepass is simply a free renaming of seasonal rewards then it is not an issue but semantics.
As soon as a paid battlepass includes material, gear, etc… (anything not 100% cosmetic only), it becomes a problem in my mind (and even that is potentially slimy on Blizzard’s part).
I imagine that they will have a free battlepass where all/some of the cosmetic rewards that one would find as seasonal rewards in D3 are removed and have those removed cosmetics as the paid battlepass.
So essentially people will be paying for cosmetics that in D3 they get for free.
The free Seasons Journey in D3 has gear and such + cosmetics.
The free BattlePass in Immortal has gear (one item), crafting mats, and currency. You just progress in it doing normal daily stuffs.
Both of those are fine with me.
I prefer the PAID version to be cosmetic only. It is actually what I will pay for in Immortal if I like it enough AND have finished the Journey part to have it unlocked. $5 for a shiny armor and weapon set is reasonable to me.
As long as D4 keeps the paid part cosmetics/mounts/pets then I am fine with it. We knew they were going to have something like Seasons and paid cosmetics anyway. They told us that up front about D4.
We shall see. A balance of those is better. Some of the cosmetics should be free in game. If they have super fancy paid ones though, I don’t really care. Esp if they are made only for the paid version - extra effort for the artists beyond what D3 has. D3 only has one cosmetic Seasonal set of armor for example. Sure, it is free, but we only got one. A new one each Season that cost a few dollars is not outrageous to me for D4.
There is supposedly a free version and you can buy the premium version just like D:I but there is no pay 2 win. Just cosmetic stuff. What that all entails I have no idea. I would like to see what their ideas are soon.
Only the Set “gift”, which is a good example of something that should not be. Handing out items instead of getting them through the normal sources in the game, removing a good chunk of the gear progression.
I dont really see D:I battle pass and D3 season journey as similar things, as much as I dont like either. D:Is pass is filling a bar by doing the same thing over and over, day after day. D3 is a checklist of “do X once”. Quite different imo.
I would love to see something like D3s season journey ripped out of the season context and made into a character progression system; rewarding players for doing diverse content and challenges. Basically the opposite of what a battle pass do ( = repetition). Also, not a system that would start over and over, just a part of how your character grows, similar to gaining lvls etc. (of course, if you played seasons, it would start over together with your lvls).
Presumably D4 battle passes also wont be tied to seasons. It would be pretty weird for Blizzard not to want money from the people not participating in seasons.
Playing the game because someone enjoys the gameplay. Kinda should be the most basic thing a game offers. If you have to add bribes for people to play, maybe they dont really want to be playing.
Not that I am saying you cant or shouldnt have cosmetic rewards for doing stuff in the game. But I sure hope it isn’t “the thing to do” in the game. That would indicate something went really wrong. The gameplay is the thing to do. It is supposedly a game.
If they had not released Diablo Immoral first that might be true. But after seeing the horrible predatory monetization of Immoral, I believe a huge number of fans who were planning to pre-order will no longer do so and many will even wait a while after release before deciding whether to buy or not.
I am fully aware of how appreciation works I deal with it every day as a Real Estate Appraiser with 40 years of experience. Which is longer than some people on this forum have even been alive.
This was my point.
To some people the extra cost will not be worth it. To others who plan on playing for several years they will have no issue with it. Especially if the game has continual updates and new content. Cost is one thing; value is altogether different. I deal with people every day who do not comprehend the difference.
Not everyone wants that.
Besides, a game can have continuous support and no battle passes, so even those who do want that support, can get it without battle passes.
Theoretically it could just be the pinnacle at release. Can be easier when you are able to make adjustments though.
Which of course, you can still do without battle pass revenue.
Neither of those where made by corporations, but the reason Microsoft bought Minecraft was surely for the monetary gain, and one would think seeing as it actually was sold, profit motivated Notch as well.
And while I’m sure there are some indie devs that does it for the sake of doing it, most of them are also in it for the money.
I think you’re saying is the Kirac’s Vault. So, yes. But is exclusively MTX cosmetics. No game advantages and as you said, is optional, we don’t need it to play the game.
