[Lounge Thread] Slaughtered Calf Inn

The US Military left no dogs behind. Nor any military personnel.

Stop listening to trolls, even if they are well known names. Some of which have been discredited many times - for outright lying.

“Photos circulating online were animals under the care of the Kabul Small Animal Rescue, not dogs under our care,” he said.

Which is under extreme scrutiny right now with many accusing them of being a fraud to collect money.

The situation will play out, but no military service dogs were left behind.

Good to hear about those dogs aren’t left behind. I think I’ll hit up some coffee shops today. If I don’t pass out on sofa or my bed by noon ofcourse.

Sheehan recognized that military working dogs had indeed been evacuated, but said many contract working dogs — which she said “do everything that military working dogs do to help keep U.S. troops safe,” such as security and detecting explosive devices — were not. “Contract working dogs should be afforded the same rights and privileges as military working dogs,” she argued.

words adjusted to save face. gotta get them votes.

despicable. it’s literally true, but “we” won’t label them military when it could make us look bad. Used them like purchased slaves and left them to die.

Fine fine. I basically did this in the slow cooker. I tend to use a mix of brown lentils and red lentils (smaller and break down into a nice thick stew base). This time I added black beans for funsies. Adjust stock amount if you add more beans or chicken. I also did not have white wine so just used some stock to deglaze the pan.

The spice in this is VERY hot so go lightly. If you have to substitute, use a spicy curry blend that you might use for Vindaloo.

I’m a big fan of a phaal, so if this is only vindaloo strength that’s no worries for me.
I’ll have to see if I can find a source of the Ethiopian berbere spice mix and give this a try.

It pretty darn hot but has a very deep and rich flavor. I use 1/3 to 1/2 what they recommend and that is with me increasing the chicken, lentils, tomatoes, stock, etc.

I serve with rice, naan, and a dolop of greek yogurt.

My spice supplier got it at Penzey’s spices Ethiopian-Style Pepper Blend | Penzeys

Found a UK supplier…

…and it has a recipe with sweet potatoes and squashes, but I like the sound of the chicken and lentils version. Shipping’s two days, so I guess I know what I’m having for dinner on Wednesday.

Looking at the ingredients it’s like Garam Masala without cinnamon and a few extras. I don’t think I can find Ajwain at spice shops around here but I can bring such mixture together myself easily except that one spice. I rather go look for home recipes to figure out what I can substitute ajwain with, then try my own blend first. I suggest if you have spice shops around you pay them a visit rather than waiting.

Those are fantastic with a curry/warm spice blend!!! Ok now the recipe in post one might get a bump at some point this winter. I had not considered making it a curry type soup. I have hand made curry powder a friend made - roasted the whole spices then ground it for me. Rich, lots of flavor, not TOO hot - and would not screw up the andouille.

It is a LOT hotter than Garam Masala.

No surprises here. Blend has chilli and ginger. In case you’re not a fan of highly spiced mixtures, I can suggest pink peppercorns though. I think it adds a very nice depth to most soups and barbeques if used right.

Oh, all this food talk reminds me, I finally got my Panera sourdough bread the other day. Website team finally figured out how to make a password field work properly (only took them what, eight years?). Decided to have it with lasagna, so I put the lasagna into a large pyrex mixing bowl and garnished the sides with slices of bread. Num nums.

Side note: Every time I type num nums, I keep seeing Binx kitty in my head making num num noises in his sleep. Very relaxing.

Late night and unable to sleep so a small story.

Back in the day I was a teacher. One of the students (not mine) suggested I might like this new game called Diablo 2. The VP at the school ran after school Starcraft tournaments with prizes (usually SC statues/figurines). I decided to try D2 given he also recommend it.

It was a challenge at first but then it became my comfort routine. A way to smash demons and work out any frustrations. A lovely repetitive activity but with exciting gear drops! I hung out in lobbies for hours, knew what items were worth even if I did not trade. I helped folks and answered questions. Rarely, I did actually make a game and play with someone who needed something.

I was on dial up and the best I could get was late at night - 28.8. I mained a Necro so my army could fight when I could not.

A bit before LoD I moved to a place with DSL! So exciting! New stuff! heh. By then it was a priority. My frozen orb sorc got to 89 and my burrizon was 85 I think. Nightly MF runs were my relaxation time.

One of the neat things that happened during my D2 days was discovering the forums. I needed Tech help so ventured on and got what I needed. Then I stuck around and helped folks. I meet people on forums, in game, etc. I ended up with a friends network that, 20 years later, and many international trips, is strong.

This weekend my oldest gaming friend who I met through D2 is visiting. We are BBQing pork, doing a fall salad (greens, apples, dried cranberries, walnuts, goat cheese, vinaigrette), roasted butternut squash with allspice/cinnamon/real maple. Apple pie for desert.

Our last weekend before my favorite game comes back!

This might explain why you demonstrate such patience with forum posters when they are acting like toddlers.

Me included.

Over here in the UK, it was “You’ve got post” and the voice was done by Joanna Lumley.

I see her travel series all over the TV at weekends. Didn’t know she was a voice actress as well.

I think I still have my 33.6k Boca Modem in my closet somewhere. Along with my G4/500 PowerMac. I need to get my MDD DP 1.25 GHz G4 back from my cousin so I can enjoy some old school OS 9 Unreal Tournament (they had working controller support natively in that game that was more complete than Overwatch’s is to this day!).

Ah, the good ol’ days of *72 and a pause prefixed into the AOL dial-up number just so call waiting wouldn’t boot me off the 'net.
