[Lounge Thread] Slaughtered Calf Inn

So yesterday my friend of 20+ years visited.

Menu:

  • Sous vide pork shoulder slow cooked (of course) to temp. When done that part, rub down with BBQ rub (I made an adobo/saizon rub) then place in a grill over charcoal and smoke to get a lovely smoke ring and bark.
  • Fresh fall honeycrisp apples! Sliced with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, sugar, and real maple in a tin baking dish with some water on the grill. fantastic way to use up leftover heat to make smoked baked apples for a pork side dish.
  • Roasted butternut squash with butter, cinnamon, allspice, real maple. Scooped out when done.
  • Fall salad of mixed greens, fresh apples, dried cranberries, walnuts, goat cheese, and vinaigrette.
  • Too full for apple pie for desert so just vanilla ice cream with light home made blackberry jam drizzle. My dad made it from his NH wild blackberries.

Friend also picked up a new cheese! A rosemary goat gouda! It was dry and OMG tons of flavor. Not sure how to use that yet but it will be fun. Tons of flavor in even tiny bits.

Oh, and friend got the network extender working so now I have internet on my deck! I have an old house that is cinder block and metal. I live in a Faraday cage.

All in all fantastic and a great last weekend before D2R!

This needs to be accompanied by a new pic of Callie trying to jump up and grab a squash.

I really should get a drool-guard when I read you recounting your cooking escapades.

Well, how is it?

I see a bunch of people stomping on their rose-colored glasses thinking they are broken.

Tom Macdonald - Greenday

Dax - Joker

What does this even mean?

I made jam turnovers using ghee for the pastry instead of butter and it came out incredibleā€¦ slightly better than an Eccles cake in texture and taste.

Itā€™s music artistsā€¦ rap to be fair.

And that sounds amazing. Jam sponge is amazing too. Iā€™m easily pleased to be honest.

I am a big fan of Beastie Boysā€¦ that is enough rap for me. Iā€™m more of a Texas blues aficionado for anything before 1990. Niche fandom for sure.

Each to their own. I have listened to Beastie Boys but i canā€™t say i could remember a song without looking it up xD. as for asfisiondo or whatever i canā€™t say i know of this LOL iā€™m familiar with that blues background on repeat though lol. chuckles

I should delve through my recipe book moreā€¦ Some chicken and rice? Some dessert? I donno. Iā€™ll get back here in a few days with a new recipe.

Found this on the Tubes, thought it was crazy cool, so here I am sharing it.

Yes itā€™s D2R, but thatā€™s not important here.

Well the wife and I bought a Roku the other day and my brother was kind enough to share his passwords on a couple of streaming services he uses.

The wife and I will probably get a couple of our own and share those with him because thereā€™s a couple of services he didnā€™t have that we want to get.

Anyway, we have Hulu and my wife saw that they have Melrose Place, a 90ā€™s drama that was around with the Original Beverly Hills 90210. So sheā€™s been binge watching the series for about a week lost in the nostalgia of it. I donā€™t watch it with her but itā€™s cool to see her enjoying TV again.

So now weā€™re looking into getting rid of our cable and just keeping the Internet Service and going full streaming services. I mean, weā€™re basically paying something like $300 a month for our cable and if we go streaming, we can knock that in half or more.

Also itā€™s almost becoming a necessity because even if you have pay channels through cable a lot of networks hide programs on their streaming services and donā€™t do the same thing with the cable channels. Not that would be better by any stretch.

Point is, once again technology has changed how I watch tv. I mean, I went from watching local tv networks, to getting cable and vcr, to now streaming in one lifetime. Brings whole new meaning to the saying ā€œGetting old is hell!ā€ lol

New Storyā€¦

Back on 9-11 2001, I was watching the attacks after playing Diablo 1 on Playstation all night after work.

Lack of sleep and the shock of it all had me all messed up in the head. Eventually, some guy came on after the second plane hit and said something along the lines of ā€œThe economy is gonna suffer because of these attacks.ā€

Prior to that, I was wracking my brain trying to find something I could do to help the situation. I was in the middle of the country so actually helping the victims was out. But the idea that the economy would suffer just stuck with me.

Finally, on a whim, I decided, ā€œIā€™ll invest some money.ā€ Not to make money but because I was only half taking my meds at the time and ā€œhad to do something to help!ā€

So I took what was in my wallet, $50 and drove down to an AG Howards brokerage to open some sort of account, as if my $50 would somehow save the economy.

Well, I walked in and the one lady in the office had the news on and I walked up and said, ā€œI have $50 that I want to invest.ā€

She looks at me kind of funny and I explained what was in my head and after the story she says, ā€œI can help you with that.ā€

Well, she walks me through the paperwork and I hand over the cash.

Then I basically forgot about it until Wednesday. Iā€™m like, ā€œOh yeah, I invested some money way back when. Maybe that account has been open all this time. 20 some odd years, no telling how much is in it now.ā€

So I called around, found out AG Howards was bought out by Americorp or something and they were bought out by Wells Fargo.

So after finally getting in touch with someone at Wells Fargo, it turns out there is no record of me investing any money with anyone.

So basically, that ā€œniceā€ lady didnā€™t invest the cash, but pocketed itā€¦on 9-11 no less!

But seriously, it was only $50 dollars and like I said I had basically forgotten about it. So, losing it wasnā€™t like I lost anything important. But still, itā€™s a little bothersome that someone would take advantage of someone on such a tragic day.

That said, just something I had to share.

Over the past few days, Iā€™ve had a rough time getting to sleep, so I jumped on D&D Beyond and bought a couple of books for myself with some Birthday Money from my in-laws.

I lost my group some years back when my Dad passed and lost the urge to play. So, I set D&D on a shelf. Now, Iā€™d like to play again but looking for a group is hard.

So, Iā€™ve been going through a homebrew Campaign by myself, filling in gaps with creative writing and creating a 4-man party. Letting dice determine what the group does so I donā€™t feel like Iā€™m railroading this imaginary group.

Setting up combat situations and rolling for both sides while trying to present challenges that might not be combat oriented through creating different NPCā€™s, organizations they have to navigate and so on and so on.

Yeah, I know, Iā€™m basically writing a story but still itā€™s been fun to just mess around with the game again. Really tempted to attempt putting a group together and volunteering as DM, which Iā€™ve never done, because the way I understand it most folks donā€™t like DMā€™ing.

For now, though, I might just run myself through this ā€œcampaignā€ and if itā€™s still fun in a couple of weeks, well then Iā€™ll have a readymade game for whatever group I might be able to put together.

I first played AD&D in 1981 I found out much later that I lived about an hour away from Gary Gygax.
I still get some of the books and watch somethings on youtube just to see what the new kids are doing.

I got a good feeling when New Years hit. Letā€™s see what happens.

I ordered a thesaurus online a week ago.
It arrived this morning and all the pages are blank.
I have no words to describe my disappointment.

Necroing this thread to discuss foodā€¦

Iā€™ve recently rediscovered deep-frying as a fun thing to do. Been making English-style chips, katsu chicken, and planning on making karaage chicken this week. Maybe Iā€™ll do some fish and make fish ā€˜nā€™ chips for the family.

Itā€™s late winter here so Iā€™ve also been making a few comfort type foodsā€¦ Last night I tried Detroit style pizza and itā€™s one of the best things Iā€™ve tried in a long time!

Anyone got favourite things they make to eat when itā€™s cold? Also open to slow-cooked meal ideas. Do I need a smoker?
