D3D Error keeps coming up

Diablo 3 was unable to initialize D3D. Comes up when I try to start the game. Then it goes back to blizzard menu. I tried restarting my computer, didn’t help and uninstalled and reinstalled, still won’t work.

When that dialogue box comes up just click Okay or Retry (can’t remember the exact text in the box) but you don’t have to exit the game or reinstall. The issue has been posted here before.

I believe there are two versions of this issue.

  1. You get the error message window. Click “OK to retry” and everything works fine.

  1. You get the error message window. Click “OK to retry” and Diablo III crashes to desktop.

It sounds like @Mandy is crashing to desktop (Blizzard App?).

The only thing I can think of is: Make sure your video drivers are up-to-date.

Here we go again. A person is having a problem. But what is the OP trying to run this game on? I run this game on my HP Laptop that has a HD 620 graphics card in the CPU. It runs fine.

So if the OP could come up with some specs on what they are trying to run it on. We might be able to help them more.

Slightly possible that they don’t understand computers to that extent. They can tell you the error because that’s basically all it says. I know some people who if you ask them specs, they’ll say something like “Well, it’s a Dell”.

That 100% true and my GF is one of them too. LOL 80% of the people in the world really have no clue!!! Most of them only know a few things. If I can get to the internet to check my emails, Facebook & Amazon they are fine. LOL

It’s a new year but Dave and his friend continue in their same old way

Thanks I’ll try that

Hello:

If you haven’t yet, try to reset in-game options:

  • In the Battle.Net App, click on the blue Battle.Net logo in the upper left corner; select “Settings”
  • In Settings, select “Game Settings” and click on Diablo III to expand it
  • Click on “Reset In-Game Options”
  • Approve the Reset, and click on “Done” to return to the main panel of Battle.Net
  • Try launching Diablo III.

Good luck !

Yep

Since then, several players have reported that they were able to fix that issue by resetting in-game options… here and elsewhere.

I wish I knew what that button does however… does it only delete the D3Prefs.txt file ? or does it do some other “cleaning up” ?

Do you know ?

I guess it does some clean-up in the preference file, most likely on Windowed/non-windowed mode setting.

OK.

It also resets the 5 PlayedCutscene variables (it did when I tried it last night before posting)-- which is why I thought it deleted the pref file.

I also seem to remember that deleting (or removing) the D3 Prefs.txt in the Diablo III folder in Documents would force the game to make a new, default file and thereby solve some issues. But that was many years ago.

I’ve always suspected that it also causes the game(s) to redetect the system conditions, just like it would do when launched for the very first time after a fresh install. Thus the game initially sets all of its own settings to best match the system.

One thing that will always cause this is alt tabbing or hitting the windows key when the game is loading.

I have had this happen for over 13yrs. It will say that and then loads the game. Here we have a person come here for help. Haven’t heard anything from the OP.

Till the OP comes back tells us what they are running the game on. All people are doing here are just spinning the wheels.

Well I have some thing to add to the crap happening it the game. Like said for 13 yrs I have got D3D error on start many time.

But last night I was playing in the game got error on the screen. At first thought it was that error when the game crashes to the desktop.

Then the game started playing again. Then a few minutes later happen again. But this time I have a chance to see the error. It was the D3D error.

It is time they fix this crap. This is the only game in the past 20yrs that I get this error. I play games on EA, Steam, Ubisoft, GOG, and other ones. I don’t get this error at all on any of them.

It will never be fix!!! They can’t even the fix the switch accounts on the interface. Then you want them to fix this. OH that is right I can make a ticket on support. But they will tell me over time. To go to the forums to get it fix!!!
