Ya, because if he came out and said “This Blizzcon is totally going to be meh.” I am sure his bosses would have been cool with that.
“Best” is such a generic term anyways. It could refer to announcements. It could refer to production value. It could refer to attendance. It is a easy word that can be spun 1000 ways after the Blizzcon.
They will announce something game related, that is the who point of having Blizzcon. What it could be is anything. It isn’t like they have only 1 title to showcase. In the last 17 years they have had a game, an expansion, and a dlc to prop up for Diablo PC, that is way more “whole lots of nothing” each year than “whole lots of something”.
I will save my money as I do every year and check the forums each day to see if anything happened. I hope they don’t rip their fans’ heart out and show it to them before they die like they did last year.

meh. I went to blizzcon 2015 hoping/expecting some big announcement regarding diablo in general, maybe not necessarily d4 but something anyway. We had a TINY booth tucked into a corner and d3 was hardly mentioned during the entire convention. What’s changed in the interim?

What makes you think that Diablo leads arpg genre anymore? 2012 seems like a lifetime ago. I still enjoy the game, and sometimes I’ll even go at it hard for a season or 2, but Diablo was equalled and then surpassed many years ago.
I mean why do you think it’s not?
Does PoE have a relatively more active community at this very point of time? Yes
Did it 2-3 years ago? No way.
Is PoE a better ARPG than D3 objectively speaking? It depends on what you value about an ARPG. This is why people will continually bash one or the other.
If we assumed PoE was a better game…does it being a better game automatically make it a leader in the genre? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Blizzard is a 20(almost 30) year old company. I don’t know when it qualified as a AAA company(I assume in the SC1, D2, and eventually WC3 era)…but D4 could be the worst diablo game to date, and it will still DESTROY PoE in player activity, exposure, and money making. That’s just how it is for now.
Give GGG more time to grow its fanbase(and if by some odd reasoning you didn’t even mean PoE…whatever game you are defending).

Diablo is like Windows, skip odd releases.
I’m 100% sure D4 won’t be at Blizzcon why would they do that blog post regarding the future of D3 if a sequel was about to come. Every sequel that came so far was announced years after the last game had entered maintenance mode.
IMHO I think we will get a "D:4 is in the works speech " Along with a we hear you and understand But, It will not come with a time table .We may also get a D2 remaster but it will not be a in house work so it will be a crap shoot as to the quality of the work. Then the hammer will drop and they will go all out on D:I with the hopes that the other stuff will be a sort of distraction . Honestly , I think there is a lot that can still be done with D3 but in the big picture it has no income generator which is today’s day and age is a dead end for a game.
I have a feeling that the higher ups keep looking at PoE and its income generating non PTW design and we will see something along those lines with stash tabs ,Cosmetics , ECT. for D:4 . But in the meantime here is a little bit of Diablo nostalgia to help bring some good vibes in the hopes of good things to come , Love the Barb always makes me chuckle enjoy and happy hunting .

Perhaps the announcement will be an attempt by Blizzard to expand its portfolio of games?

The blog post was exactly about D3 getting out of maintenance mode. This means D4 won’t be like D2/D3 in all aspects and they won’t compete for player base.

Because D4 is not finished? In what timeframe it will be is unknown but it wont be this year.

When I started reading the blog post I thought exactly this, until I read “gameplay system updates are also within scope”.
You simply don’t tweak such things if D4 appears in 3 years.

As a Warcraft fan I found last year’s Blizzcon to be awesome.
The Road Map of Content for Battle of Azeroth looked great.
Classic WOW confirmed release date.
And of course Warcraft 3 Reforged.
But Diablo fans really got the shaft.

And last year around this time we got “The forges are burning hot”… what we got at Blizzcon was a mobile reskin.
Nothing that comes out of Activision should be trusted unless it is on the big stage. And even then there is always fine print.
