At the time, there were game systems in place due to technical limitations at the time. At the time, D2 was by far my favorite game.
It is now 20 years later, we can improve the game systems since these technical limitations do not exist. Why was D2 not 4k? Simply stated, we did not have that technology at the time.
Why do you think that they had characters expire with time?
Why do you think they had small stash?
Simply stated, it likely was to save server costs. Now that amount of save information is trivial in terms of server costs but back then was far more significant.
Even David Brevik has posted recently things he would change in D2 given the current technology to improve gameplay. You should check out his twitter account.
It changes the feeling when you’re in a MP game and everyone sees a gold ring drop to the ground. Obviously if you’re playing with randos everyone is just gonna rush to click it, but the excitement had with friends is different if everyone reacts at the same time. It’s fundamentally better and more exciting!
That is your opinion. To me, it is not fundamentally better or more exciting. To me, I consider it bad game design that alienates part of the playerbase and promotes leechers and hackers.
It is fine that you feel that way. It is fine that my opinion is different. It is clear to me that D2 fans have divergent opinions on this.
And so when something is open to opinion and interpretation, then it should be left the same. This is a remaster, not a re-interpretation of the game.
There are things about D2 that make it great, that, when we play it, we may not realize or even understand. But keeping all those classic systems and mechanics intact is of upmost importance to maintain the spirit of the game.
For D2 fans, Brevik’s game designs choices for D2 are often held up as an example of great game design. Even he thinks that he would change things now in hindsight and with technical evolution.
I firmly disagree with this statement. There was a certain segment of the D3 population that wanted to keep the real money auction house. This is a clear example of divergent opinions where a change should and was changed.
Show me where he wants personal loot. And if he did say that he’s an idiot. You are being way to obvious with you bad faith argument of “he said loot filter might be okay so let’s discuss personal loot drops!!” D2 doesn’t need people like you ruining the franchise again
The desire for personal loot in D2, in my opinion, comes from the single point of “I want to join boost games or bot games and get phat loots dropped for me while I do nothing”
I don’t buy this, I’m clearing all the stuff in 8 player games and leechers and hacks are stealing it all. Because no one carries an 8 player game and gets salty if they actually want loot.
You fire up a private game and go ham on all the bosses and lvl85 areas enjoying all the loot for yourself.
I feel like there should be a line with changes but, I mean, if the game has 1.13c it’s already changing the game so much compared to what actual old school players remember how can you really die on your purist hill? You can argue it was official but by that point nobody that actually created the game probably had any say anymore with those changes.
Respecs for example are the antithesis of Diablo to me. If that is in the game there might as well be improved looting mechanics.
I just don’t see how you can call yourself a purist but you’ve been playing 1.13c+ for the last 10 years.
