Game causes PC to crash

I have observed a crash from in game several times now. Once while playing, and perhaps 3-4 times idling in the game menu. I can’t remember the last time my PC crashed in any other game. The game appears to freeze for about 1 second, and then my system crashes. The game runs smoothly up until the crash, and shows no probable symptoms up until the time it crashes.

My system specs are:
Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit
CPU AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
GFX AMD Radeon R9 280X
RAM 16GB Corsair DDR4@3200MHz

My graphic card is about 7 or so years old, but it is somewhat superb in comparison to the minimum requirement (gpu userbenchmark com/Compare/AMD-R9-280X-vs-AMD-HD-7850/2192vs2182), and plays other games without crash that are more graphically demanding eg. ARMA 3, DayZ, BF5

Is there any other information I can provide?

System crashes are an issue that falls beyond the forum support.

You can try the steps here:

More info about why they aren’t supported here:

I don’t get the blue screen with my crashes. Just a one second freeze then a crash/reset - screen just goes black and PC starts to boot up again.
As stated, my PC does not crash while playing other games; only this game. No coincidence. I find it quite appalling that Blizzard are just dismissing the issues of thousands of people rather than just taking responsibility and fixing the problem.

System crashes fall under the same category and approach that blue screens do. This is the same stance they have for all of their game titles, so it’s absolutely nothing new. As for fielding your opinion on this, I don’t work for Blizzard, so I can’t do anything about that.

My crashes too always end with a Windows 10 BSOD with a hint to a Nvidia sys file (which is the standard message for Nvidia-related crashes, so nothing unusual here).

You may try to update your Windows with the latest optional upgrade as described in this forum thread and see if the problem persists:

It’s the optional “Windows 10 Version 21H1” update whose patch notes can be found here (C/P and remove the blanks). Lots of system-related fixes in there:

Ok thanks I’ll take a read.
Also, I think it could be something to do with GPU usage. I’ve read an abundance of threads where people say with graphic cards better than mine, that the game is using 100% GPU. It appears that mine uses 100% unless I’m in a cave where it uses maybe 80-90%. Interestingly enough, in relation to the thread you link; I get the worst FPS in Harrogath.
Originally I was playing the game on high graphics. But I’ve noticed that it still uses 100% GPU on high, medium, or low, whilst giving me the same FPS. And as stated in my first post, my graphic card is much better than the one listed in minimum requirements. Given this information, it is abundantly clear that this issue and those like it are caused by poorly written and unoptimized shaders. Unfortunately, it seems that Blizzard will not be addressing this issue though. I’d say there’s a good chance that getting a refund is probably the best thing to do here.

I’ve written a short blog with a potential workaround/fix which you can read here (C/P the link and remove the blanks):
