This first happened to me in Act 5 NM.
I clicked the red portal in A4 and then crashed. Relogged and crashed. Made a normal game (which places me in A1) and no crash. Then in normal, waypoint to A5 crashes.
The strangest part is clearly that I was able to get into A5 perfectly fine in normal but since getting there in NM I can’t go back at all in any difficulty.
I’ve got the same problem. Can’t go to NM Act5 or Normal Act5…

Just for the sake of progression, you guys can try to enter in the difficulty not already loaded into A5, then go back to NM and switch to Legacy graphics and try to go in again. I was able to get into A5 in NM that way.
But I’m not willing to play like this. I’m going to just check periodically after each patch to see if anything improves. Best of luck to you guys.
I am having this exact same problem. I am unable to create or join any game with one particular character who is in Act 5. This has made the character unusable since he’s stuck in that act and I’ve not yet beaten normal difficulty.

Exactly the same case but for my soso Char in A4.
I created a new char barb and crashed when entering A4 againnnnnn!!! what the hell A4 has for me?

According to my PC log the crash was caused by excessive memory usage (almost 8gm RAM) used by d2r.exe
I changed my pagefile to add more virtual memory (though i got 16GB of RAM) and that seemed to fix it for me.
I also have a similar issue, when I make a game in act 5 my game runs fine, I can play through the first area outside the town but as soon as I go to waypoint 2 I crash within minutes of being there. I have no issue in any other act but I can’t progress past normal difficulty at all. Just today I was able to run through and get the 3rd waypoint of act 5 but the moment I got into any combat my game crashed again.
Mine hates act 5, I get half way to shenk and it crashes, or walking in town crashes it. I only beat act 5 by switching to classic graphics mode. It still does the occasional random crashing D2r does but I was able to get through to nm. But I can play any other act with the new graphics without issue even with lots of action going on. Act 5 must be cursed or something.
It was resolved after I made all latest updates to the Windows 10 OS last night
While the result „crash“ is the same it is not necessarily a bug/ problem with the game.
If you think it‘s a bug then you can surely report that in the bug forums.
Most cases are local problems however which players tend to ignore because other games run just fine. Other games have different requirements and those cannot be applied to D2R, espacially because D2R specifically supports Windows 10.
If you want other players to help you troubleshoot those issues, i‘d suggest opening your own topic. Customer Support may stick their head in and help out but it‘s not a given. It is helpful to post a fresh dxdiag.txt and steps you‘ve already taken to resolve it. Additionally of course state your problem you are facing.

After scouring for answers everywhere online, I found a command line in an old WoW thread that might be useful for most people that have this issue. From what I’ve been noticing is that the crashing has something to do with directx12. If you use -d3d11 for your launch command lines it will force the game to start with directx11 instead of directx12. I’ve been crashing a lot in act 5 and after using the command line I was able to push through and pretty much finish the entire act in one sitting, something I haven’t been able to do for a few days now.
I’ve encountered this same issue now.
Ever since getting to Act V, I cannot get the game to load at all. It starts, shows the creating game/door opening screen, and then boom. Back to desktop. Have been trying to play for 2 days now and nothing.
OK - Was able to fix my issue with crashing upon entering act 5.
I always keep my Windows up to date, but there was an optional update I didn’t have installed.
It’s Windows 10 - Version 21H1.
After installing that and figuring, what can it hurt…I rebooted and am now able to enter Act 5 with no issues. Have been playing now with no crashing.
If you are encountering the same, try that update!
We have seen multiple reports now of this specific issue being resolved through the optional Windows update that came out recently. Definitely give that a shot if you haven’t to see if it helps. When you open windows settings/updates you should see a section for optional updates with an option to download specific ones.
Is it by any chance this optional Windows Update

To help players avoid installing something they might not want, the KB # would definitely be helpful here. That way they can install that specific one instead of guessing which one. 
We are basing this off player reports and if they don’t detail which specific update it was, we can only recommend trying available optional windows updates. It’s also not 100% confirmed which is why I specified “We have seen multiple reports…” and “To give it a shot” I can’t confirm it will definitely solve the issue as there could be multiple causes just that it is worth trying.
