It’s a mechanics check. Avoid the avoidable damage.
I wouldn’t necessarily say the fight forces you to play the game counter intuitively. Moreso that, due to a lack of overall DPS check, you chose to optimise damage around the relevant parts of the fight to offset other aspects of your performance.
It’s actually extremely common in higher end pve content to hold damaging abilities for the most important points in a fight where that damage matters, instead of simply pointing it at the boss on cooldown. As well as often using abilities to cover specific mechanics like roots or slows instead of for general mobility. They’re extremely useful skills to have overall and I’m glad to see a solo encounter be able to teach them.
Very true. As you can see, I am not a high end player, so outside of a RL saying to hold cooldowns for a particular point, it’s not a common play style for me and I imagine many of the players like me.
I’m not sure if I should say “average” or “mid- range” or “typical” when describing myself. I imagine any of those could be offensive to some people, but I think you know what I mean.
And I did probably err on the side of caution to ensure I could nuke the eggs. Having an egg hatch would be very problematic. Outside of an intimidation stun for the cast, I was unlikely to recover from that.
Yeah my naked kill I had to hold every single cd either for the even egg or the odd one. The fight ended up taking 17 minutes because I was doing zero damage outside of CDs and I couldn’t put anything into the boss.
Ok. I’m impressed and I feel bad. Took me 10 minutes and I was maybe 618-619ish gear wise. lol
Eh, you killed it with perseverance and problem solving. No need to feel bad
Don’t feel bad. Zekvir kills don’t come for free and you got yourself one. No one else’s accomplishments invalidates that.
So I gave it a few more tries today and took the advice to go in on my BM Hunter. I’ll say this, trying to do Zekvir with a melee class first was definitely doing it on Hard Mode. Particularly a mobile ranged class is the way to go.
It is just a gear check at this point. At 610 ilvl I have just shy of 5.5M hp. Zek melee’s for about 1.8 to 1.9M. So the fight goes as long as it takes for him to get a crit in for 3.9M and boom, fight over. lol
So yeah. To anyone struggling, grab your hunter, get them geared up and it won’t be a problem. Personally since I don’t M+ or Raid I doubt I’ll get high enough ilvl to get it done. But for those that can get geared up sufficiently it really isn’t as bad as folks make it out to be.
Look around.
There’s no potions. Bran isn’t throwing potions.
You’d use your defensives but they’re all down from the last time he decided healing was optional. Kind of like how he isn’t cleansing you right now. Zekvir auto attacks you three times. One of them crits.
You are now dead.
It’s not very common but it does happen and it is RNG.
It’s an RNG check. None of the mechanics are terribly complicated. Most of the difficulty comes from poorly communicated abilities- you’re never quite sure where endless spikes AOE start and end- and pure RNG.
Sometimes you interrupt Spittle, you get punished for it when he then heals himself and you can’t stop it. Sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes he completely ignores his eggs and lets you burst it down. Sometimes he drops two AOE’s on it forcing you to burst it in about half the time. Sometimes Zekvir drops an egg on the pedestal which means that his claw slam will be invisible. Oops! Sometimes you’re trying to pick up a potion you can’t see because Zekvir’s model takes up half the screen. You fight in a tiny arena so your camera’s going to screw with you if you get to close to the walls, making it impossible to see AOE indicators. That pedestal has a broken movement box so any time you’re around it you’re functionally letting Jesus take the wheel because it will cause wipes through no fault of your own other than knowing in advance that it has invisible chest high walls.
Which is why anyone claiming it’s ‘easy’ wont be taken seriously. You only cleared the fight because Zekvir didn’t punish your mistakes and Brann actually did his job for once instead of standing in an AOE fear he’s telling you not to stand in. Especially if it’s a ranged class who’s DPS doesn’t really dip because all their abilities operate at range.
The RNG for me was the crit. He does 3 melee attacks back to back to back. If I had Dwarven Medicine up it will heal for about 1.1M per tick. The most I ever saw it tick for inbetween the melee attacks was once. So if you get 3 regular hits that one tick is just enough to keep you in the fight. If any of the 3 crit though the fight was over for me at that ilvl.
Its really just a gear check once you get the pattern of moving out of bad stuff down which isn’t really that hard.
I can see that. My issue is the thread started off as bad faith then op argued with many people and turned to being condescending and calling people trolls.
So if it helped, thats fantastic and Im glad you didn’t let the negativity dissuade you.
Update: Just downed Zekvir ?? on this ret pally ilvl 607 with Brann at lvl 32, so it is very possible to kill him undergeared. This fight is less about ilvl and more about not getting hit and killing the egg.
The problem is that item level reliably lets you circumvent RNG nonsense in the fight.
Having Zekvir lay AOE after AOE on an egg as a melee DPS spec hits different when you have 600 item level versus 619.
Doing the mechanics properly does too.
This. I dont get what the controversy here is.
Any class can kill the boss in champion gear. Yes, some classes are easier than others, but they all can do it.
If you’re struggling with the boss and you see other people on your class in the same gear as you doing it how can you think “Oh this boss just needs to be nerfed.” instead of “Maybe I could have done something different there.”
Are you surviving more of the hits with 200k more health
Yea how many tries tho, when the egg is in the bad you just wipe over and over
You can bait the bad away. Most of the bad is aimed at you.
Well brann is tanking for me lol
Really not many. I’m saying this from the perspective of a pretty standard player who only plays on weekends. I’m not some 3k IO streamer or anything.
I probably killed Zekvir on ?? 50-60 times for crests this season, probably only dying maybe 1/6 times after I got the first kill. And those times I do die I can accept that I did something wrong to get killed.
